CHICAGO—Any other Labor Day, this sleepy residential neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side would be bustling with late-summer picnics and volleyball games. But on this rainswept holiday, the only Albany Park residents spending time at Gompers Park are a hardened group of jornaleros, mostly immigrant day laborers, and a handful of supportive neighbors. The workers are gathered, as they are every morning, waiting for contractors to pick them up for temporary work doing light construction and manual labor. And the neighbors are here to kick off Community Day Laborer Watch, putting volunteers at the site, to document civil rights abuses by the police. The watch, organized by the Latino Union of Chicago, is another barb in an increasingly hostile standoff between…

No Jobs Make Mean Streets

When Anthony Haydin woke up on June 30, he did not imagine his street would be the scene of one of Chicago's most deadly shootings. Three people had been shot in an apartment right across the street from his. Police said the victims had been murdered in a "gang-and-drug related shooting." On July 13, just hours after guns claimed the lives of three more people in separate incidents, the Rev. Robin Hood, a Chicago community activist, lashed out. "No one should be surprised by all this shooting going on in Chicago," he said. "Our schools are crumbling, young people -- especially young black people -- have no jobs and don't have any hope. Politicians don't want to bring good jobs…

Republic’s Battle Cry

Echoing the direct action workers took in the Depression to win unions, the 260 members of the United Electrical Workers Local 1100 began occupying the Republic Windows and Door factory in Chicago on Friday, Dec. 5, to protest its abrupt closing. Their protest marks the most dramatic response so far from workers to rising layoffs--1.3 million since September, the most for any three-month period since immediately after World War II. By highlighting failures of the financial system bailout, it also sends a strong message to Congress and the incoming Obama administration that government's response to the current economic crisis must protect workers' rights and living standards. Bolstered by an outpouring of support from political leaders, unions, community groups and the…

Editor's note: Longtime In These Times Senior Editor David Moberg appeared on "Democracy Now!" on Dec. 10 to discuss the arrest and indictment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Moberg sat down with Juan Gonzales, the show's co-host, for the TV interview in Chicago. A transcript of their conversation, courtesy of "Democracy Now!", is below. Watch the original video interview here.] JUAN GONZALEZ: Yes, stunning events here in Chicago the past few days with the Governor arrested, handcuffed, taken from his house at 6 a.m. in the morning by FBI agents, and this stunning criminal complaint by Patrick Fitzgerald. And David Moberg, the senior editor for In These Times, joins us. And, David, your reaction, when you heard about this yesterday…
