Labor Paeans

By Jody Kolodzey

Musician John McCutcheon will sometimes challenge rally organizers to name two speeches from the civil rights movement. “Everyone can name one, but it’s amazing how almost no one can name two. And then I say, ‘OK, let’s start naming all the songs from the civil rights movement that we remember.’ ” And their names are legion. “I think that, in general,… return to article

No doubt I’m missing something obvious here, but I think I know why you aren’t receiving comments on your story.  There appears to be no story here (this is not a comment on quality, mind you—I find no text upon which to comment).

Jody has nailed it…most of us know and/or feel a message sent to us from a song much more than hearing a “dry” speech….MLK more often than not, had “music” with him as he rallied for racial solidarity….Our brother, Ceasar Chavez , always wanted sounds of the southwest guitar near his gatherings…..without the musician, i.e. Joan Baez, many movements of the past would have never reached the populace.  I was a member of Local 121 out of Toledo, Ohio and many of us were meshed in our common groove….some of us made lots of money per gig, some not so much and many dropped off into oblivion, but we respected our Union and what it did for us.  If any of you have ever seen the play; Bernabe: A Drama of Modern Chicano Mythology, you will readily admit, that without the “music”, this little play, written by Luis Valdez would hardly hold yout attention , ...For thoses of us that are musicans and have worked in the movements,  giving our all for the “revolution”, your story is an invitation to ever be mindful of ” the turning pages”......
