The End is Near

By Kurt Vonnegut

I am writing this before the election, so I cannot know whether George W. Bush or John F. Kerry will be our President, God willing, for the next four years. These two Nordic, aristocratic multi-millionaires are virtually twins, and as unlike most of the rest [RETURN TO ARTICLE]

(This is the second time I’ve posted this; I don’t know what happened to the first.)

<Tim Christopher wrote:  “. . . acquiesce to the fact that you cannot change the world… and then carry on from there.”>

Thank you very much for your thought-provoking and considerate response.  I’ve heard about and read in many places the comparison of the Rove/Bush/Cheney consortium to the Anti-Christ:  create fear, invent social catastrophe among various peoples, exacerbate strife that already exists, make war, and then “create” solutions to all the world’s problems so that the masses come running to Daddy for protection.  It all fits quite well.

Of course, there is a major problem for Rove/Bush/Cheney to overcome:  we communicate better now than ever and, unless the consortium finds a way to stop us, the world will at least see what’s coming.  That is unless, as you say, we all “acquiesce to the fact that [we] cannot change the world.”  Once we become apathetic, as will happen from extended periods of acquiescence, to activities dramatically affecting our well-being, then we truly are doomed to being steamrollered.  From apathy comes a decline in meaningful communication and thereby progressive actions, and without those actions, the continued decline of our precious environment, economies, societies, etc.  I ain’t givin’ in!  No matter what!  And I hope nobody else will.

America continues to change into a modified version of pre-American Revolution governance and societal structure (Oligarchical/Monarchical, Church of England, lack of middle class, assets in the hands of the nobles, enormous gap between rich and poor, constant fear of retribution, etc).  China, in my opinion, will be closest to our future societal and governmental structure.  European countries and some others around the world will remain progressive only through continued actions by the populations of the world who do battle to prevent American right-wing consortium and Chinese domination.  If America, China, and others with similar intentions win out, the middle class, as well as true democracy, throughout the world will become extinct.

The actions of the Bush administration since 2000 have been causing the growth of a very large segment of the population, who, because of their inability to overcome fear, will parrot whatever verbiage is fed to them and wag their tails for those in power when attention is directed toward them.  Those with decent-paying jobs will do anything to keep them and will blame those without for being completely inept or worthless lazy, sloths.  This very large group of sycophants and their rulers are causing our greatest problems and will be the ones to stand in the way of alternative energy development and environmental protections.  No doubt there will be millions in this group who believe we are destroying our environment and need to change our ways, but, because of fear, they will do nothing.

Check out this article in England’s right-wing newspaper for an example of the ultimate in conceit:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/02/19/wbush19.xml

The consortium isn’t spreading “freedom” around the world.  Daily we lose more and more freedoms and suffer more and more loss of control of our governance.  The consortium is spreading its new socially-self-restructuring economic system.  And this new system is so appealing to the rich economy-controllers in various countries that it is, indeed, a Leviathan; a Leviathan without concern for the environment it destroys.

No, Tim, it’s time to bring down the Leviathan (by the mighty use of the “pen” of course, as I have previously been chastised in this thread for not making clear that I am not attempting to incite riots in the streets).  I do appreciate your bringing the link to the article “2020 Vision” by Fred Kaplan in Slate.  I will write to 3 of England’s newspapers and provide this link.  And I will write to several of our American papers and ask why this subject is not covered in depth.  This morning I have downloaded the entire 123 page report “Mapping the Global Future:  Report of the National Intelligence Council’s 2020 Project” and will begin making my way through it.  Again, thank you for your reply and the terrific information contained in it.

    1nonservilepeasant: “I ain’t givin’ in!”

    I reckoned as much.

By suggesting: “acquiesce to the fact that you cannot change the world,” I was actually offering a glimmer of hope, a door of perception, a way in, a way out. A non-linear approach to problem solving derived from Buddhist teachings. Here, for example, In this message to the people of the United States on the events of 9/11/01, the Dalai Lama suggests tapping into the oneness (God) for the way to re-enter the world “in a way that will cause the world itself to change.” http://www.wildnesswithin.com/dalai.html

Notice the Dalai Lama doesn’t suggest we must go out and change the world if we are to make the earth a better place to live. That’s a fundamental flaw of our western culture, as I see it, the externalizing. Heaven & God are “up there” somewhere and you’re either “with us” or you’re “down there” with the evil terrorist’s, and so on. And so you have the new conservative right “out there” trying to change the world, to smite the devil, fighting all the enemies of Jesus - just as Jesus himself would do, apparently….
    http://www.killingthebuddha.com/damn_nation/gospel_dubya.htm

I used to think that it was all an act, that neo-conservatives were merely using religion as a tool to maintain power and wealth. But particularly since Bush’s re-election, this connection has become quite evident as well as duelling perception’s of Christ (pointed out in the brilliant essay by Steve Almond, posted above) and the associated polemic’s we now represent as red states and blue states - virtually, a population divided in half.

The lesson of “Killing the Buddha,” incidentally, (a single interpretation is presented on the host website of ‘The Gospel According to Dubya’ essay) also relates to how conditions on our planet are affected by the extent of controls over our positive and negative flow of liberties as described by Isaiah Berlin whereby freedom FROM (negative) represents the influences that are external and freedom TO (positive) represents those self guiding principles that we may or may not choose to project. It is currently the progressing shift to the former that is flourishing at the expense of the latter in the United States under the neo-conservative leadership and it is this disparity that engenders oppression through loss of inner vision.

‘Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion’ is one of the most important documentaries currently available that describes not only the plight of the Tibetan people, this magnificent culture at the top of the world, but the global effects of U.S. and WTO policy - it must be seen! But for all the suffering this culture has been forced to endure, their plea to the west is not for us to attempt to change the world by fighting, but simply to acknowledge the rights of individuals and fully realize our own identity for others to emulate and thus cause the world itself to change so they may then regain their independence peacefully.

“Let us have the courage of our admitted ignorance, of our doubts and uncertainties. At least we can try to discover what others require, by making it possible for ourselves to know men as they truly are, by listening to them carefully and sympathetically, and understanding them and their lives and their needs, one by one individually. Let us try to provide them with what they ask for, and leave them as free as possible.” - Isaiah Berlin

Tim wrote:  “. . . Let us try to provide them with what they ask for, and leave them as free as possible.” - Isaiah Berlin

Well, Tim, it’s a good thing for you that we aren’t neighbors because I’d be knocking on your door far too frequently trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible from you—for free of course!

As usual, the links to the sites in your last message blossomed into much more and, as usual, I was rewarded with very important information that I hope to gain the wisdom to use properly.  Thank you and keep ‘em comin’!

You have introduced me to Isaiah Berlin’s work and I am fascinated by what I’ve read thus far; I’ll continue to read more as fast as I can.  Of course, now I have to read Rousseau; I’ve started with The Social Contract.  Geez! I’ve got such a reading list!

I value the Dalai Lama’s words very much.  However, I have the same problem as Tom Selleck’s character in one of my favorite Westerns.  When asked why he left the Jesuit school his mother put him in, he replied, “I never got the hang o’ turnin’ the other cheek.”  I’d rather live life as the Bible and other great books recommend, but I can’t bring myself to do it and leave everyone else behind.  And then there are the obstacles in the road to bringing everyone else around.  It’s a big job, Tim.

I recently read Arianna Huffington’s column <A >America’s Finite Future</a> and Seymour Hersh’s article in the New Yorker <A >The Coming Wars</a>.  From the former, I get the shivers over the potential that a large segment of the population doesn’t care what happens because the end-times are near and the Rapture soon to come.  From the latter, I get more significant anxiety over the fact that the present governmental leaders have found ways to circumvent the entire system of democracy as intended by the founders of this country, and are able to do as they will in what they consider our best interests.

This republic has been changed from a representational format and now fits Wikipedia’s description, in part, that <A >“Republics are not necessarily democratic — for instance in many republics power has been exercised in a dictatorial manner . . .”</a>.  Yeah, we elect representatives still, but they don’t represent us in any effective manner but occasionally.

Outsourcing or globalization, free markets, and other policies have potential positive ramifications for the greater citizenry if introduced and offered in a metered manner.  However, without direction by our leadership, all Americans are affected by the negative ramifications of such lack of direction in one way or another.  Even if one does not lose one’s job, the negative effects in the overall present economy and in the future economy will be dramatic.  Why are the people not permitted to direct their economic futures?  Why must read we read about our plights in magazines, newspapers, blogs, and hear and see reports on radio and television?  Why are we always the last to know?

The condition of our environment affects every living creature on the planet.  So how is it that we citizens cannot control our own industries and city, county, state, and federal leadership so as to prevent damage to all of us?  The government shouldn’t have to be encumbered by bringing every stinkin’ problem and solution to the citizenry for discussion and approval, we elected them to use some common sense, but when it comes to the things that affect our lives so drastically as the conditions of our environment and economy, we have to be involved.  Not to do so violates the spirit of our Constitution and the leaders who misuse their elected powers are guilty of malfeasance, failure of fiduciary responsibility, and violating the public trust.

The old days of using the excuse of the inability to easily and rapidly communicate with constituents have long passed.  It’s time to swamp our representatives with communication and make them understand that we need a new type of republic that does what the people want, not the lords of the oligarchy.  We can form citizen groups who can collect, analyze, formulate recommendations, and draft communications to governmental reps and set up meetings often.  The governments at all levels don’t have to get bigger, we just have to become more active and follow through.

We are on presently on America the Barge, set afloat to go with the currents, with no way to steer clear of collisions or lethal hazards.  And if the barge goes down, all aboard are lost.

MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee. Seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy god, I will also forget thy children. Christ is asking “What good are you to me being ignorant?” more importantly what good are you to Christ if you do not see how Satan’s demons work in the world system.
The book of revelations tells us that Satan and his demons where cast out of heaven unto the world. The bible also tells us that they control the planet. If this is correct then the people we have empowered as our leaders are being controlled by Satan and his demons. : Ye are of your farther the devil and the lusts of your farther ye will do, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own, for he is a liar and the farther of it. The truth is the governments and politics are evil. And there trying to make the people forget there is and ever was a God by blinding them with technology, misleading them with wrongful information and inaccurate education, teaching lies through generations, slowly turning the world evil. Jesus said his people would be destroyed for lack of knowledge and this is what is happening. Are government is making us believe that they have our best interest at heart when really they have nothing but evil in their hearts. Feeding us wrongful information, depriving us of knowledge, controlling our minds with money and technology, making us all slaves to their society for more control and power. This is all part of a revelation that is coming and will happen. Our government leaders want to destroy this world and replace it with a new world led by the ANTICHRIST. A global police force with a one world government. It will be called the New World Order (NWO). The NWO has been upon us like dark clouds over a city raining its wrath upon our nations and our leaders are the ones provoking it. Pushing us towards this NWO will mean the destruction of one 3rd of the planet. In this NWO there will be ten super nations with only two kinds of people left, the Masters and the Slaves. But to achieve this goal there are certain demands that must be met. They must first deceive the whole world which is what they are doing at this very moment in time. Bestowing lies upon us, such lies as to we are fighting a war on terrorism when really the war on terrorism doesn’t even exist. It’s just an excuse to lead the world in to one big war. Try not to be fooled by thinking it was terrorists who attacked us first by flying airline planes in to the twin towers. Because the destruction of the world trade centre was planned way before it was even built. And only the people in the most powerful seats could have planned something like this. The fall of the towers was just the tip of the iceberg. And it’s what the government needed to begin a war on terrorism. Governments are secretly working from both sides of the conflict because what they really want is world war 3. Bombs will be dropped, both chemical and biological. Hundreds and thousands of people will die. Countries will fall. A global war of disease destruction and terror will occur before this new world order can be set in place. And America is right at the heart of it all. People need to wake up and realize that we are living at the end of days. God once said their will only ever be one government of the people, that government been Jesus Christ. Any one else other than Jesus Christ claiming to be your government is nothing but a LIE. This is the forbidden knowledge the global elite never wanted us to learn. Our leadership has knowingly and consistently been pursuing a hidden agenda which, when fully carried out, will mean the destruction of our nation as we know it today and the beginning of the Biblical Great Tribulation. A war is coming, but not just any war. This will be the final showdown ’Gods war” and as bible prophesies are being fulfilled before our very eyes, the end of our world as we no it is almost here…

Much of what you say has truth in it and some of it may happen, though on a much smaller scale in my humble opinion.  There are many similarities regarding the Anti-Christ comparisons, but it cannot happen now unless the all-powerful corporate rulers in every nation find a way to stop communications.  It wouldn’t surprise me that an election held today would show Bush/Cheney as losers.  The reason for this, again in my humble opinion, is communication, communication, communication!  Keep actively engaging people in discussion/debate/argument; keep researching and exposing the hypocrisies and behind-closed-doors manipulations and we will continue winning back our country.

Read articles on news service websites from around the world and you’ll see that the entire world is waking up to the devastating policies of this administration even faster than Americans are.  Can you imagine China, UK, Russia, Argentina, and a number of others throwing in with the Bushies for a New World Order or a One-World Government?  Try as I might, I cannot imagine such a coalition at this stage.  There are many enormous multi-national corporations gaining incredible power because of their ability to manipulate economies, but they’re also buying up America while our government sits and watches.  If there’s going to be a New World Order, it won’t be controlled by Bush/Cheney.  If people all around the world, but especially in America, get creative and start new businesses networked together to battle the Wal-Marts, then the almighty mega-corporations will lose control as well.

Globalization backfired on the neocons; it should have been a metered strategy over time and with proper incentives for all concerned.  Put on top of that this administration’s willingness to actively dismantle environmental protections, actions that will negatively affect the entire world, and you have a growing disgust around the world for America.  What we better do is make the rest of world understand that more than half of the American population is against this administration’s strategies and tactics, and that we’re making progress, slowly, but progress nonetheless.

Be worried but let your worry keep you active.  We’re gonna get this thing handled!

It is insane fundamentalists like 1nonservilepeasant who are destroying everything. Even though he reaches some sensible conclusions, it is along completely the wrong routes.

If you ever read this 1nonservilepeasant - You should think for yourself. As long ascribe to being a fundamentalist, anyone who can outdo you in interpreting the fiction that is the bible, or brainwash you with self-serving interpretations of it, will control you.

You have no free will and will most certainly remain the slave you are. Sadly, because you make quite a bit of sense here and there.

Iceland Posted by Myrkon on Mar 23, 2005 at 3:13 AM

    Define fundamentalist.  Define slave.

Now that you’ve completed these basics, find in any of my writings commentary that will lead you to connect me to either of these terms.  Your leaps to conclusions based on the information about me that is available to you span a metaphorical chasm that makes the Grand Canyon seem a crack in a dry bar of soap.

Now, if I’m navigating “along completely the wrong routes,” why not share what ARE the correct routes, in your humble opinion, of course.  Keep in mind, however, that I have a couple of very good dictionaries within arm’s reach.
