Slow Food for a Dying Planet

By Mark Winne

Take I-40 east from Albuquerque, N.M., for about three hours and hit the brakes just before the Texas border. Don’t worry if you don’t have a road map, the smell of cow manure will tell you where you are, and if you have your windows down to enjoy the scent of the high plains, the flies will soon be helping you… return to article

As Gene Logdson says- ” you may not be able to stop the big agribusinesses from growing but you can raise your own chickens and vegetables.
seed savers exchange in Decorah Iowa ( has website) has been onto this slow food movement for a long time. They comment on gmo issues and their latest magazine has a great article on the issue. Wendell Berry- ah dear Mr. Berry- poet writer- family man- farmer. You have GOT to read his work. Read Gene Logdson too. Chelsea Green books (website) has many titles on this stuff too.
If they can control our food they can control us completely! As an old Mother Earth News reader from way back there are many things to ponder. CSA’s community supported agriculture and small farming. But hands down Seed Savers Exchange is priceless. You grow the veggies and save the seed and grow again next season. A concept as old as agriculture itself. When you become a member they send you this telephone book size book of seed savers all over the country and you can send for these seeds from members and grow heirloom varieties. The heirloom seed movement in this country is just wonderful and important!

You can not have your cake and eat it.
Democracy at its finest. There to serve the top dogs wallet and pals. Where is the difference between a communist based state and whats happeing here. Are the both not dictating to us how to run our lives. We are born free, but hey dont worry. Old Mac will put you on his lap and whisper in your ear.. “Don’t worry about the future. Leave it up to us…!” as he rams a big mac down your throat. Bon appetite!!!

‘Petrini ... pleads with us to slow down, taste the summer mountain grasses in the Asiago Stravecchio (nothing Velveeta-like, here), sip a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano on the terrace of a sunny Tuscan villa.’

Of course - if he’s paying!

    Cal -
Not true.  You can always move to Italy.  I did, and I’m a lot goddamn happier.  Yesterday I ate a salad and a plate of ravioli con funghi porcini e panna for 2 euro, and though I didn’t have any wine, I could have bought a bottle of Montepulciano (IN Montepulciano) for about 4 euro.  If a glass is about a fourth of a bottle, then my meal would come to about 3 euro, factoring the weak dollar in, $4.  Less than a big mac, fries and a coke!  And if you bring up the cost of an plane ticket, you could pro-rate down a $700 ticket over a year with 730 meals to less than a dollar a meal more.  It’s worth it!  Get out of that big dumb football player of a country and eat well!  Buon gustaio!
