Radical Changes

By Guillermo Gómez-Peña

I just turned 49, which is quite dramatic if you consider that I am a much touted “radical” performance artist, meaning someone who is known for his transgressive aesthetics, political bravado and uncompromising irreverence. Suddenly, I am growing white hair and a belly, and my voice is reasonable and tempered. A cruel curator friend of mine says that I am no… return to article

Isn’t it a blessing to live to be old? To be wise enough to know that we are fools?
    Sweet article.

A portrait of the artist as middle-aged man. Not overly trod territory, and, yeah, kinda sweet.

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I read this. I’m about a decade behind you, but I know exactly what you’re talking about.

I’m still (at heart, anyway) the drunk-poet-musician I’ve always been, but I’m finding that I’m much more useful and effective if I expend my energy egging on and “grooming” the next generation.

We may no longer be the fireworks, but we can still light them.

If no one raised their voices in anger about things that cause bad changes that effect the vast majority of peoples, I’m not afraid to be labled a loud mouth.  I’ve been told to shut-the-hell-up, get the first stage out of town and worse things.  But most of the things I spoke out against unfortunately did come to pass and lots of people were hurt by them.  If most of us were pessimists intstea of pacifists, we would be living in more ideal conditions. Hail to the REBELS of this country and of the world who care about people.

“We in the states should not have to pay for the dirty way in which people in other countries handle their food and start epidemics in their own lands and do not feel guilty about spreading it to other lands.”  Pat Grzybowski on immigrants and avian flu transmission.

“Hail to the REBELS of this country and of the world who care about people.”  Pat Grzybowski , see above comment.

Who is Pat Grzybowski? By her/his? own admission a loud mouth. I would go no farther than saying: xenophobic hypocrite.

    Well Dear Sam,

Whats your theory about how you would contain a desease that could have the potential of killing the young who haven’t any built in ammunities and old people with respitory problems and no immune systems?  And by the way, I am not a hater of foreigners.  I find most people interesting and feel everyone has input thats worth listening to.

Okay Pat, I’ll take you at your word.  Don’t know about containing the flu, that’s for smarter people than me, but containing hatred and fear is something I can take a stab at.
