The Real Memogate

By Solomon Hughes

President Bush gratefully received Tony Blair’s support for the invasion of Iraq, but that relationship may now be turning sour. As antiwar feeling runs high in Britain, recently leaked secret official documents show both the U.S. and U.K. governments conspired to cook up a case for a pre-planned Iraq war. Days before the British general election, the Sunday Times published… return to article

I was jubilant while watching this on C-Span.

George Gallaway should replace George W. as soon as possible, if it were legal, in my opinion.  What a courageous speaker of truth who, incidentally, can actually speak English.

I only wish I can be alive to see the historical obituary written for George W. Bush. He will be remembered as a Fillmore for his intellect, a Hoover for his economic stewardship, and unsurpassed in war mismanagement, Constitutional law breaking and dismantling of America.

Unfortunately, my son and his peers will have to deal with the wreckage of this half witted excuse for a failed Texas businessman.

I’m re-reading Bob Woodward’s “Plan of Attack” His perspective and interviews with the Bush-Cheney-Rummy-Rice-Wolfowitz team is good running history of the events leading up to war. Its a good balance to the “spin” from both sides. Bloddy shocking to realize what went on behind the wheel of the USA “in those times”.
Bush takes the hit for being the commander in chief, but as we all know, the real evil doers seem to be his hand-picked “ USA world domination team”

A question for those on this board:

If a politician came out and admitted a political mistake, would you be more or less likely to vote for him?

Brazil Posted by Neil on Jun 2, 2005 at 11:31 AM

I would admire his/her candor.  Whether I would proceed to vote for that individual would depend on if they used the wisdom gained from their error to avoid such errors in the future.  If they made a solid attempt to rectify the consequences of their error and “repented” in word AND deed, I would consider that an attribute unless the mistake was SO severe that it showed complete incompetence.

In Bush’s case, he still won’t even admit that he KNEW he was deceiving us.  This was no simple mistake, this was pre-meditated deception with a huge cost to Americans and Iraqi’s alike.  I would not forgive him for this, as it was not a “mistake”.

United States Posted by Margaret on Jun 2, 2005 at 1:12 PM

    Response to Neil:

Depends on the context, doesn’t it?  If you thought that cutting taxes or interest rates or some such economic policy would work, and then you admit them as political mistakes during an economic slump, I may be sympathetic.

If your “mistakes” include fabricating evidence leading to war, not to mention tacit and/or direct approval of torture, and later on you admit this, I would thank you for your honesty, and then try you for your crimes.

United States Posted by rocco on Jun 2, 2005 at 1:21 PM

Here’s one of the biggest reasons why Bush’s Iraq War will not go away anytime soon and why the costs will continue to escalate. An Associated Press story this morning on the deaths of at least 38 people reported, “Earlier in Kirkuk, a suicide car bomber targeting a convoy of Toyota Land Cruisers carrying civilian contractors killed four Iraqi bystanders, including a child, and wounded at least 11 others, said Dr. Bassam Mohammed of Kirkuk Emergency Hospital. None of the occupants in the convoy was injured, although one vehicle was damaged, the U.S. military said.”

Now, I ask anyone who has even a smidgeon of military knowledge, given this type of violence in which insurgents use roadside bombs, IEDs suicide bombs and sniper attacks, would any commander send out his/her troops out on the streets knowing that a convoy of Toyota pickup trucks and SUVs are the juiciest targets to hit?

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman reported in a May 30 article quoted a U. S. Marine major, “Basically, we’ve got all the toys, but not enough boys.”

But that is the crux of the problem in getting support from the Iraqis. Keeping down U.S. casualties is the correct thing to do but substituting Iraqi men who are signing on to the police forces, mainly to just have a paying job, is not the way to win any war, especially one in which their only protection from a hail of bullets or bombs is a Toyota truck.

It’s also hard to comprehend why the non-combat Secretary of Defense, an ex Navy flier who saw no military conflict, and his non-combat chief, G. W. bush, who sat out the Viet Nam War in the champagne unit of the Texas Air National Guard, ignored the advice of the highest U.S. Army command, General Eric Shinseki, that we would need between 300,000 and 500,000 troops to restore order and prevent violence from spreading in the aftermath of the Iraq invasion. But of course they did ignore the advice and recommendation and now we are all paying for this colossal mistake and judgment.

In dismissing General Shinseki’s recommendation deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz said in his testimony before the U.S. Congress why he believed a much smaller coalition peacekeeping force than General Shinseki envisioned would be sufficient to police and rebuild postwar Iraq. He said there was no history of ethnic strife in Iraq, as there was in Bosnia or Kosovo. He said Iraqi civilians would welcome an American-led liberation force that “stayed as long as necessary but left as soon as possible,” but would oppose a long-term occupation force.

There you have it. “No history of ethnic strife in Iraq.” So, the bloodshed continues and the ignorance that we can send out Iraqi forces with little or no body armor in unarmored Toyota trucks instead of under-armored U.S. Humvees with U.S. military who have inadequate body armor protection remain the status quo. The stay-on-message from the Bush administration who launched this disaster is, “We are winning the war on terrorism.”

We used a lot of our toys in Bush’s preemptive war, now he and his defense department and military commanders are dismayed that we don’t have enough boys. Got that?

The parents and/or spouses of the 1600 or so American men and women who have died should be storming the White House. These men deserve no respect nor support for the travesties they have committed, supposedly in our names for FREEDOM. When will the other 48% of Americans who still believe him and his band of crooks come around to see the truth? (hmmm, I guess that’s a facetious question)

I’ve strongly suspected for years that Bush is but the hand-picked mascot of the “world domination team.” Why else was he allowed to wander the streets and airport runways of Florida on 9-11 while all his neo-con cronies were wisked away to protective bunkers?

United States Posted by Rees Chapman on Jun 2, 2005 at 5:41 PM

    Rees,

I also wondered that, as well as why Bush was allowed to keep bike-riding last month in the Capitol evacuation.  Laura Bush and Cheney were whisked away to safety, but no one ever told the Prez until 20 minutes after the evacuation ended.  A little telling, don’t you think?

Also, Robin, I don’t agree at all that our servicemen don’t deserve respect.  I hope you meant the Administration.  Soldiers simply do as they’re told, our beef should be with the Commander in Chief and his staff.  Let’s not make the same mistake we made as a nation with the returning vets from Vietnam.

Bill Clinton was NOT a great president. Unless you’re a slightly open-minded conservative, Clinton sucked balls. Philsophically, he’s no better than the current asshat in the oval office.

    JBennett,

After 9/11 just about the entire non-Muslim world declared that they, too, were Americans (see LeMonde, Sept. 12, 2001).  The tidal wave of compassion and support for America that was the byproduct of the disaster created the greatest sense of unity and support for the US since the end of WWII.

On Jan. 1, 2000, our country had a massive budget surplus.  Within two years, we had plunged and continue today in freefall into a cravass of overwhelming debt.  The CBO says that if we don’t get this in check very soon, it will likely destroy our economy.  Greenspan keeps making the same remarks as well.

But does this idiot of a President deal with these things logically?  No, he thrusts us into a false and unprovoked war against an enemy that never attacked us.  He threw our surplus down the toilet to give more money to his already wealthy backers, and he continues to lie in every speech I’ve ever heard him give.

Clinton had his foibles, to be sure, but there is no comparison between the two.  Our country was in far better shape under Clinton and is on the road to perdition and destruction under this chimpanzee.

    Liberal and Proud, Bush will be rememberd for etc;
I have often wondered if anyone would pick up the analogy between Bush and Herbert Hoover. I wonder how long it will take the US political elite to decide that he is not worth the reckoning that will surely follow the current shambles of US economic policies? What interests me is the question of what or rather, who, the US political and economic elite will settle on after his term? I understand the appalling Hilary Clinton is making faith based noises about running for Office. How truly depressing. While I agree her husband was considerably better that Bush (and I couldn’t give a rats about his blow job by the way), he was nevetheless just another bright boy who showed his mum that he could serve the ruling class as well as his predecessors.

What really interests me is how much longer the US ruling elite thinks they can put off the social reckoning that will surely come from a US Middle Class (working class every-where else), that is about to find out just how trickle up economics works when the white collar jobs start going down the toilet.
I am interested to know what you and others think the ruling class will tolerate as an opposition? Is Howard Dean about the extent of it in the US?

In the meanwhile, we’ve got to get this horrible excuse for a man out of the White House.  You can only imagine our frustration with no one to build a charismatic following like Clinton (Bill) did.  Can you loan us George Galloway?

If only the guy would lie to a Grand Jury about a clandestine BJ.

Taking the country into a falsely justified war, squandering the sympathy of the world after 9/11, alienating virtually every ally, and spending down a surplus into an aquifer of red ink is pretty small potatoes by comparison, I guess. As for 100,000 + 1600 deaths, oh well…

It will be interesting to see what Distractor Factor is drawn from the magic hat by Rove et al… Will it be a renewed effort for a Marriage Amendment? An anti-Chinese barrage? North Korea? An Iranian nuke? Interplanetary invaders? I’ll be curious to see.

About time all those who voted for him abjectly expressed their apologies to the coming generation of young citizens. It’ll take at least a generation to repair the damage done to America’s stature in the world by this government.

Well, the 2006 midterms aint far off. If only I could believe that the Dems could muster the cojones to impeach the boy if they gained a majority in the House. And even if he was impeached, how likely would be a conviction?

Always ready to be pleasantly surprised…

Philippines Posted by Kuya on Jun 5, 2005 at 8:02 AM

Not only should Bush be impeached but he should have been impeached long ago. Like in 2001, when all his corrupt benefactors from Arthur Andersen, Enron, Global Crossing, etal, were working overtime to rip off the American consumer with breathtaking success. Kuya commented, “If only I could believe that the Dems could muster the cojones to impeach the boy if they gained a majority in the House. And even if he was impeached, how likely would be a conviction?”

But, it’s far too late for impeachment, regardless of the most extreme circumstances or the magnitude of the malfeasance committed by the criminal syndicate now occupying the White House.

Unlike Watergate when Republicans and Democrats alike agreed the corruption, lies and criminal acts committed with Nixon’s direct approval and involvement in the break-in and Watergate break-in, today’s atmosphere is far different.

Now, all the talking heads are framing the debate over W. Mark Felt’s whistleblower role, posing the either/or question as to whether he is either a villain or a hero. Judging by the mainstream media and the current milquetoast, cowering crop of reporters, the villain label is winning out.

Given the Republican control of every branch of government, including the U.S. Supreme Court and the compliant, obsequious mainstream media, there is no way on God’s green earth that anything similar can or will happen to the even more pernicious Bush syndicate of liars, theives and swindlers.

Can you imagine, a whistleblower today taking his/her case to the Bush Justice Department? The same Justice Department which, under John Ashcroft, no only failed to seriously investigate the stunning, traitorous disclosure of an undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity, but remains part of the coverup.

This traitorous act clearly broke the law and may have compromised national security yet it was pursued purely as an act of revenge and payback against Joseph Wilson whose Niger yellowcake uranium report undercut Bush’s flawed prewar intelligence on Iraq’s possession of WMD.

In Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address, Bush had referred to Iraq’s supposed attempt to obtain uranium in Africa to suggest Hussein was close to possessing a nuclear weapon. Robert Novak, another conservative, state-sponsored propagandist and part of the Bush echo chamber, quoting two unnamed administration sources, reported that Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA operative working in the counterproliferation field.

Believe me, there is no way this autocratic, totalitarian mob now in control of our entire government will cede one iota of power, even if means suspending our U.S. Constitution.

If anyone doubts that for a minute they will soon get a dose of reality when the USA Patriot Act, set to expire at the end of this year, will be renewed. But included in the revised Bush edition will be unprecedented executive powers that will chisel away even more at our civil liberties and individual freedoms than the original bill.

Impeachment? No way. But Democratic control of either congressional house? Only when and if the people can wrest away the paperless trail Republican-owned and manipulated computer voting machines. Then, and only then, will democracy have a chance at being restored.

Democracy didn’t survive Florida and Ohio in November 2004 where massive numbers of votes mysteriously “shifted” from John Kerry to G. W. Bush and exit polls which favored John Kerry mysteriously were all “wrong.” But again, only in states that were key to giving G. W. Bush another four more years in the White House.

And that is the sound of my parade being rained on.  Actually more like hail.

United States Posted by Matt H. on Jun 5, 2005 at 8:26 PM

It seems “we” the collective people (i.e. now hundreds of organizations, web sites, authors, and individuals) have enough data, information, and knowledge, which if all brought together, coherently assembled, and smartly presented ought to create the kind of awareness wave the present administration cannot survive.

On present form, no single organisation is going to create change in the US; no mainstream media company has the leadership, guts, or basic economic interests to catalyse such a change; and we’ve seen that it is in fact the work of many individuals of like-mind in the UK that are beginning to create political change in the UK establishment.

Two ideas have crossed my mind to date. Please comment on what you think about this:

    (1) Recently, a new paid-advertising trend has started with blogs. Groups of bloggers have formally joined into networks of blog sites so as to create a single catchment for advertising dollars. So instead of the readership of one site, the advertisers in such a network can claim the readership of all the sites. Such networks are growing and there have been several editorials in ‘blogland’ about just how soon such networks will catch up and compete with mainstream media in terms of number of viewers.

The first idea is now obvious: Create networks of blog sites (9/11, Iraq, and The US Elections) in which the various participants create a single central and STRUCTURED reference of 9/11, Iraq, and US Elections information (could simply begin as an index or informative URL listing). The structure could, for instance, cleanly identify categories such as: speculation; commentary; fact (like the memos!); etc.

    (2) Open Source Software Model:

Open source software is a huge and established way/ movement / approach to building software by an open, distributed community of software developers. The best-known example? Linux. Why not use the same model, methods, and some of the organisational tools (Wikis, Repositories, Content Management tools, et al) to build a publishing open-source information reference on 9/11, Iraq, and The US Elections; with of course an emphasis on content and hyperlinking that content.

Such an effort could help amplify the efforts of thousands of interested individuals, cohere actions like “writing to your congressperson or Senator” through standard forms and applications, etc. But most importantly, like http://www.wikipedia.com , it would make it easy to look-up, cross-reference, and readily BRING INTO VIEW the now thousands of efforts world-wide that are active in this subject. There is, for one example out of hundreds, a crack German team of multidisciplinary engineers that have put together an amazing analysis of the collapse of the World Trade Towers and other structures on 9/11. While I’m sure the site has had lots of visitors, no one I’ve ever talked with has ever heard of it?!?!!

I presently have no expectations of a silver bullet of revelation to motivate the US public to ‘take back America’. Whatever kind of “kool-aid” is in the water, air, airwaves, etc. is truly pervasive and growing, and more than a few people are openly speculating as to whether or not there will be 2008 elections (despite the fact that in New Hampshire the 2008 ‘elections’ are in full swing already!).

However, time and time again around the world what you can read about historically, and see today in fervent action, is that if individuals are “moved” (as in come to feel), that the status quo is unacceptable, they begin to act in ways that makes that status quo unsustainable.

If the full weight of publicly available information about 9/11, Iraq, The Elections, Depleted Uranium Victims (Iraqi civilians, UK, and US veterans and their families), came together in one well organised, readily accessible place, wouldn’t that make a difference?

Spain Posted by Kyle on Jun 6, 2005 at 4:44 AM

    Kyle,

What would make a difference is a coherent message based in fact that appeals to a majority of Americans that are motivated enough to show up and vote.  We saw this happen during the last election and your side lost.

All of your wild conspiracy theories just don’t sell even with “a crack German team of multidisciplinary engineers.”

Ken Mehlman is the biggest liar on earth next to Bush.  Did you all see him on “Meet the Nation”?  Same old Republican lies.  Even Tim Russert said he thought Mehlman was incorrect that the Downing Street Memos had been debunked.
And he’s right.  Even Downing Street and Jack Straw have confirmed they are genuine and correct.

And, USM, we didn’t lose the last election.  Your hackers “fixed” it.  Go back and read the article on this site about the election fraud.  Sorry you have your head stuck in the sand, or somewhere.

By the way, if Dems regain the House, impeachment proceedings will begin in 2006.  Even Santorum is taking a dump in the polls and looks like he will be “dethroned”.  DeLay won’t survive this inquiry, so we’re on our way!

But your question is still spot-on.  Where is the outrage at being hoodwinked by computer hackers, the Bush-Blair lies, etc.  Americans want easy certainty, and 51% will sell their souls and their country off to get it (they think).

You had the respect of a substantial portion of the globe in 1989 when the Tian An Men students put up a model of your Statue of Liberty in the middle of Beijing. Middle Class people will only begin to listen when they see it directly affecting them. When their pensions are stolen away..when their kids can’t go to college, because they can’t afford the co-payment due to the new college aid formula, when their kid gets killed over seas, when they can’t afford to go to the doctor, because their health insurance premium was too high to afford, and when they can have to choose between wal-mart trinkets and gas for their car..then they may start to wake-up.

For the already disenfranchised who still voted for this administration...well, they had nothing to lose in their minds, so they voted as their preacher told them.

He will not give a time table for withdrawl until he gets the bases built to attack more countries.

What is your choice?  Our freedom or death in Middle east.

    R Morris,

Obviously I choose to end our involvement in Iraq within the next 6 months.  We must begin pulling out now to goad the Iraqi’s into taking responsibility for their own safety.  We should be completely out with no bases left behind within 6 months.

Hope you also will participate in the June 16th rallies around the country calling for Bush’s impeachment and an explanation of the Downing Street Memo.  I will be there, as I hope most people on this site will be (in their area).

Cindy and all those wonderful people who are doing their
part to bring and end to this war.

We should all get down on our knees and beg for forgiveness for allowing Bush to get away with the murder of our Sons and Daughters and other countries that support .

The Iraq people, they did not deserve this murder of millions of their people.  How can we as Americans look ourself in the mirror and know that our country did this to so many.  The injured that have come to spend the rest their life crippled, burned, blind, emotional trama.

Its time to make it right to everyone Impeach Bush and all of them before another person is killed.  Lies Lies is this what we are made of.  Is this America the Land of the Free and Brave, no Christian would send people to war and let them be killed for reasons to control Oil and Control the world.
