That all depends on what your idea of taking my advise really is! I can’t remember when you’ve ever tried it since 1980. The 1960s and 70s were liberal times so that doesn’t count. Besides the Dems use the military far more historically than the uptill 1980 isolationist republicans who hate foreign “nation-building”. Progressives often advise the democrats to start with “truth telling”. Talk incessantly about the costs and lack of gains of the occupation. The loss of the stable US middle-class, the loss of investable wealth in the society and low savings rate are good things to point out with regard to structural GOP failures. What about the debt and deficit which they now say doesn’t matter! How about the fact that the country’s best civil engineers say we have more crumbling infrastructure than ever before! What about the fact that Bush has made us that laughing stock of the world with the bogus war on terror which has failed to produce even a single terrorist in these massive and racist sweeps and now we have to release most of these men who have been held without charges or trial dates. Bush uses fear and ignorance. Let the Democrats use hope and knowledge!

The middle class is still the biggest
single class and benefitted under both

If the taxpayers agree to the tax increases
then we can fix more of the infrastructure.
Or sublet it to private interests to do the
job.
Our democracy functions best when the Party
differences are narrower rather than when the
extremists run both parties, Goldwater,
McGovern as examples.

Christian wackjobs like Tim LaHey, kings of classic fantasy such as J R R Tolkien, children’s bestsellers like Joanne Rowling, and I don’t have the figures for the airport bestsellers and romantic novelists like Danielle Steele and Jackie Collins and Jeffrey Archer - but I would BET that to date each of them has outsold her. They HAVE to have done - they wrote many more books and she only wrote 3 novels, two of which were/are bestselling. The rest are all works of essays with her “adopted son”, the psychoanalyst Nathaniel Branden.

Yes the people of both Iraq and Afghanistan hated the Baathists and the Taliban and apprediated them being removed. The Baathists were placed in power by the CIA in 1963 by ousting a popular social democratic reformist government of Abdul Karim Kassem in order to place in power a regime more favorable to US oil interests. In Afghanistan, very little has actually changed and Kharzai is unable to control the countryside. Don’t forget that we supported the Taliban until the Centgas deal for a gas pipeline from the Caspian to Pakistan began to fall through in late 1998 in which the main participant, Unocal, had almost a 47% stake! We created the Taliban indirectly through Pakistan’s Security Agencies to stabilize the country. We only became disappointed when it began to backfire and turn on us like Saddam did when he attacked Kuwait after fighting Iran for us for 8 years. Our foreign policy there has been a disaster! We backed tyrannies out of blatant self-interest and saw it backfire dangerously so we used the military to clean up the mess. We definitely helped Saddam crush a spontanious, democratic uprising after the collapse of the Kuwaiti campaign in order to prevent a popular representitive government from emerging in Iraq and also to discourage revolutionary change in nieghboring countries like Saudi Arabia which cycles its petro-dollars through our financial markets to the tune of trillions! The left was an option in both cases but we insisted on using the tactics of intrusive colonialism to shape highly vetted puppet governments which serve US corporate interests more than those of the indigenous population. The 100 Bremer orders which through open the economy to the detriment of the Iraqi people are a case in point. This has nothing to do with security or stability! The elections and other reforms particularly in Iraq were begrudgingly granted by the occupation in the interest of holding onto power and than only in a qualified way. Everyone, including conservatives, know this and that the living wage movement in many cities is trying to make their demands for local wage standard legislation a national issue. They have proven statistically that raising the wages of the poorest sectors of the workforce neither contribute to unemploymnent nor stymie job creation! It is obvious that Labor’s political weakness comes from the gradual reorganization and retrenchment of capital over the past three decades and the fact that the old capital/labor accord (1945-73) is no longer necessary for stable accumulation of profits in the current global era.

The market does not reflect what the workers wage is actually worth because the employer now has more legal and market power than the worker. Capitalists can hold down workers wages by swelling the reserve army of labor through immigration, streamlining production through technology, or simply reducing capacity in the face of overproduction. Workers wages are low when in the face of high productivity and booming profits, wages remain stagnant or lose real value as they have over the past two decades. There are those who work full time and still need food stamps, soup kitchens, and other subsidies and charities to get by. This has been documented not merely by the left but by the business press as well. Even the national median wage of $15.59 which is distorted by East and West coast costs of living and which most people don’t recieve, is not enough to raise a family of four much above the national poverty line where over 15% of Americans find themselves today! Your capitalism has again developed the forces of production but has not given much to those who labor and CREATE WEALTH! By the way, without the capitalists the workers would certainly NOT have died out-I don’t understand what you are talking about!

I shall give my support to Jack, who, even though he at times becomes insulting, maintains the ability to state his ca(u)se clearly and rationally. I’m sure I saw a Hardesty post on something around here with an August date.
He is still active on the web though - I got some sort of a link from another site, quite randomly, onto a right-wing “paleo-con” website the other day, run by Dr something or another.. the name was on the tip of my tongue but refuses to pop out!! Pretty hateful site though: the article was about the death of Christopher Reeve and how it served him right or something!! Hardesty was pretty active there for a while. But guess what - not even THEY liked him and they threatened to ban him!
