Embedded with Tim Robbins
By Joel Bleifuss
Embedded, written and directed by Tim Robbins, is a play that examines the War in Iraq through its key players: the Bush officials who concocted it, the embedded journalists who covered it and the soldiers who fought it. The play opened in 2003 at the Actor’s Gang Theater in Los Angeles. From there it went to The Public Theater in New… return to article

Reader Comments (20)Page 1 of 1 pagesI wonder to what extent Robbins didn’t go straight to theaters because not enough theaters wouldn’t be willing to show a controvercial film, criticizing Bush and his policies so harshly, in order for the venture to be economically feasible.
If so, the question becomes, why theaters wouldn’t show it. Because they fear reprisals, a hatchet job from Karl Rove, what?

Posted by Roger Drowne EC on Jun 28, 2005 at 11:23 AM Of the people, by the people, and for the people. That is the only way out of this mess that the politicians got us into. I have to add that the American people were accessories to Bush’s madness, they sat back and allowed him to trash everything dear to this democracy, and attacked anyone who questioned his policies. Because he paid lip-service to christianity, lying about being born-again, he got away with an illegal, unjust, disastrous war. Each American who supported this war must accept their share of the responsibility for it. Because of their careless thinking, tens of thousands of Iraqis died and many more thousands are horrifically wounded. Thousands of children dying horrible deaths because the American people chose to wallow in apathy. This proves beyond a doubt that people get the kind of government they deserve, the American people don’t deserve any better than that war criminal in the White House. If I could make a mass citizens’ arrest, I would gladly do it. geniecarpenter@yahoo.com
Posted by Regina Carpenter on Jun 28, 2005 at 2:39 PM It’s the people vs. the corporations in a death match for control of the government, and right now, it’s a complete blowout in favor of the corporations.
It may take a revolution, with the requisite assassinations, to undue the damage done by the corporations.

Posted by jules timerman on Jun 28, 2005 at 4:16 PM Violence is what got us into this mess. Non-violent methods, such as those espoused by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, are what is needed now. It is only by putting our lives on the line in protests and demonstrations, telling the people the truth about this gov’t, and persisting until we wake them up, that we will have a true revolution. It is only by rising above violence, that we can triumph over it. It is only by uniting, and putting the common good first, that we can succeed. Peace.

Posted by Lefty on Jun 28, 2005 at 8:40 PM Back when I was news editor of The Nashville Tennessean and saw Robert Altman’s “Nashville” at its premier performance, I, along with the rest of the audience sat in stunned silence for a few moments and then rose as one, applauding the screen credits.
I thought then that it was not just a film about Nashville, but it was about America.
When the blonde waif at the end marched up and down, using the steps of the Parthenon as a stage, and sang, “People say we ain’t free, but it don’t bother me ...” that said it all.
Today we may think we’re free, but we’re actually a nation of sheep.

Posted by Lefty on Jun 28, 2005 at 10:44 PM Bush keeps lying, people keep dying. Why? So he and his crooked corporate fat cat partners at Halliburton, Custer Battles, and Bechtel can stuff their pockets with Iraqi oil, cash, and gold…as well as drain the federal government of hundreds of billions of dollars of tax payer money.

Posted by Antonio White on Jun 29, 2005 at 2:02 AM Yeah, the social legacy of Robert Altman: Isn’t it strange after all that followed the original M.A.S.H.; all those years on television and the great unifying event that were it’s final episodes, and all these past years on syndication—and yet the cumulative effect on America has been to elect Frank Burns president. Go figure.
Posted by Tim Christopher on Jun 29, 2005 at 2:10 AM I’ve read all these grandiose comments about what Bush did and what his buddies did and what that’s cost the country. But I’ll tell you what, at least he has a simple, clear idea. And all I have to do is follow it. I got three kids, my wife’s out of work, we’re in debt up to our necks, my dad’s sick in the hospital, my kid’s ain’t doing so well in school and I’m afraid they’re gonna end up working the same janitoring job I retire from if I get to retire before I get laid off. We’re about to lose our house and all I’ve worked for all these years. I can’t even keep up with my own life and I’m supposed to keep track of all these politicians and referendums and policies and bills and who’s making deals behind closed doors and whether or not I’m getting the real story on anything I read in the paper and staying up late at night after I come home from my part-time job on top of my full-time job to find the real story behind the story on the internet and I never even learned how the government works when I went to school. Then, on the other hand, there’s President Bush who has a plan he’s very dedicated to and what have the Democrats got? What has anybody else got? Maybe they’re terrorists out there or maybe not but I don’t know how else to be safe anymore.
...OK, that’s not really me, but how many millions of people do you think I accurately represented just now? So the question is, HOW do we put government back in the hands of the back-broken, mind-boggled people of America?
Posted by Ean Behr on Jun 29, 2005 at 5:37 AM Mr. Behr…I enjoyed very much your message. There are millions of people doing just those things, people who trust their gov’t to do the right thing…... NEVER TRUST THE GOV’T!!!!!! Along with the rights we treasure as Americans, come serious obligations. As citizens we must keep our gov’t honest, we must be vigilant, and we must demand openness and transparency. It is our sacred duty, and I mean sacred, to inform ourselves about what our leaders in the White House and Congress are up to. Forget about propaganda, get the real facts, and then act on them. Make waves! Tell the truth to everyone you can reach! Call your people in congress! Organize if you know others who are fed up…...Bottom line: We can get involved with saving this democracy, or we can sit back and trust blindly those in Washington. Its your choice, I hope you make the right one…..genie
Posted by genie on Jun 29, 2005 at 6:57 PM Ean Behr,
You are absolutely correct that Bush has a plan that he’s dedicated to. He’s a crook from a family of crooks who have been in the war profiteering/trading with the enemy business for 80 years. Does that clarify Mr. Bush’s plan for you.
I’m sorry to hear about your economic situation. You are not alone. But, what has Bush done to help you with the tax burden on your home, the cost of your medical care, the quality of your childrens education, the cost of gasoline?
The answer is nothing. The reason is because that’s not part of his plan. As for keeping safe, are you really concerned about that? Do you also worry about being struck by lightning? Do you really think Bush cares about that? What was Bush doing when the PDB (Presidential Daily Brief) spoon fed to him said that Osama Bin Ladin was preparing to attack? I guess preventing that wasn’t part of his plan either. He was too busy planning a subterfuge to invade Iraq so that he could do what the Bush family does - war profiteering - in this case, among other things, taking kickbacks in exchange for no-bid contracts for his friends’ private corporations to perform what are supposed performed by the public to be military operations in Iraq. You see, the military doesn’t pay kickbacks for a job.
As for the Democrats plan, why don’t you know what it is? Could it be that under Bush’s plan to deregulate the media, the so called liberal media, which in truth is the corporate media, are owned by giant corporation who want to do business with . . . Bush, and don’t want to talk about the democrats’ plan?
Posted by Lefty on Jun 30, 2005 at 12:48 AM Tell him the Democrat’s plan Lefty, tell him the Democrat’s plan!
Posted by Tim Christopher on Jun 30, 2005 at 1:20 AM looking at your message lefty, and knowing what i know and have read and what is historical fact about the Bush family, the current situation Americal faes truly blows my mind. it makes me realize that the term “conspiracy theory” has been made into a hypnosis trigger, and upon any utterance of the word, people tune out and scoff on cue.
why hasn’t ANYONE EVER asked the president about his grandfather’s financial support of Adolf Hitler? and about the money made by his family through WWII profiteering? the why’s drive me to madness. Why hasn’t ANYONE EVER taken Cheney to task for making money through Halliburton TODAY RIGHT NOW through no-bid contracts in Iraq?
How come people don’t just read? It seems the most fundamental and obvious truths about Iraq, and 9-11, and the Bush family, and everything else are so easily dismissed by the two words “conspiracy theory”. I would urge you all to read that which has been deemed far-out or conspiracy and beleive all of it until the fallacy has been proven.
