Drawing the Line

Could a cartoon bring down the Bush administration? Maybe not, but that won’t stop Ward Sutton from trying.

By Mikhaela B. Reid

Ward Sutton’s satirical art has appeared in mainstream venues such as TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Time. But his labor of love is the no-holds-barred comic strip he’s been drawing for the Village Voice since 1998, now available in the full-color collection, Sutton Impact: The Political Cartoons of Ward Sutton (Seven Stories Press). Sutton recently spoke to fellow cartoonist… return to article

    STOP RIGHT THERE!

and check out this Christian Metal song I’m putting the finishing touches on, Thou Shalt Not Kill. Should be an eye-opener for any prospective baby killers out there. If you can spare yourself a few minutes(and an eternity in Hell) give me some feedback.

And remember baby-killers, Hell is hot.

    enjoy,
    Ashtaroth-Karnaim

    Thou Shalt Not Kill

    Unborn children destroyed, dissected

    Disfigured, dismembered, murdered, broken

    Crushed, hacked, mangled, suctioned

    Abortion murder! Abortion murder!

Thou shalt not kill Exodus 20:13

    Unborn creatures tortured, asphyxiated

    Lacerated, butchered, massacred, broke up

Ripped to shreds, reduced to dust

    Abortion abomination! Abortion abomination!

Thou shalt not kill Exodus 20:13

    Irresponsibility, conceived by immorality

Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God 2 Timothy 3:4

Eye for eye, you will die Exodus 21:24

Thou shalt not kill Exodus 20:13

    Abortion is murder!

Thou shalt not kill Exodus 20:13

    Abortion is murder!

    “Thou Shalt Not Kill
    Unborn children destroyed, dissected
    Disfigured, dismembered, murdered, broken
    Crushed, hacked, mangled, suctioned
    Abortion murder! Abortion murder!”

Thou shalt not kill, innocent, living, breathing, Iraqi citizens.
    Bombed, burned, butchered, tortured,
    Thou shalt not kill,
    Africans slashed, starved, deseased,
    Forgotten, robbed, beaten, destroyed.

    Thou shalt not kill,
    American starving….
Hell I could go on and on.

Jesus Christ, either become a real Christian Lefty, or go away!
Get a life dude and then maybe you will get a clue.
Christianity is not a living its a way to live.

Keep up the good work Ward.

MaxCat: don’t copy MY song and adjust it to suit your own agenda! If you want to save Africans from themselves then write your own song, or put on a concert where high-profile pop stars pledge their unwavering wish that Africans didn’t live in squalor. I’m not asking for advice about what issues to take on, I’m asking if people like the song. If you don’t have anything helpful to say then beat it, cunt.

Way to go Ward! It’s nice to hear about the many ways progressives are fighting back. I too hope that the Downing Street Memo gains more media traction. In These Times had a fabulous article about it yesterday, but now I cannot seem to find it….
Unfortunately I have to respond the anti-abortion solicitation posted by someone masquerading as Lefty.
If the right cares so much about the unborn, why do they do nothing about the obscene levels of mercury that many women of childbearing age are exposed to? By the way, a pregnant women exposed to excess mercury can hurt not only her but the fetus as well, in the form of mental disorders at birth. I have read that as many as 1 in 6 women of childrearing age in this country have higher-than-recommended levels of mercury in their bloodstream. Where is the outrage by the right at this?
Why do the right support a president that is cutting food stamps and Head Start which have disastrous consequences for young children? It seems like the right only cares about a child until it is born, then their social darwinist views take over.

Michael Hardesty, aka CatMax, Martin, Steverino, Mikey, Peter, Jack Barnes, etc., etc., is a paid conservative TROLL who posts under numerous names (including hijacking other posters’ screen names), and has conversations with himself in order to disrupt liberal discourse. JUST IGNORE HIM. He does this on other liberal forums too. Google his name.

Having said all that, I would prefer the Bush administration be brought down by the FBI leading them out of the White House in handcuffs.

Good point.  Moreover, why did the right try to protect drug companies, who used themerisol (methyl murcury) in childhood vaccines as a preservative, leading to an epidemic of childhood autism, by attempting to sneak an amendment into the original patriot act, immunizing such drug companies from legal liability for the harm caused by their dangerous, defective products.

Because GOP stands for “gang of pimps?” (he said rhetorically, but not really).

It is essential for we liberals to keep focused on our values and core beliefs and distinguish them from the conservative idiots and crooks.

Liberals place the interest of public health safety and welfare above the interest of corporate profits.  Conservatives place the interest of corporate profits above all other interests.

However, liberals understand that economic prosperity is an essential element of the public health, safety and welfare and understand that a balance must be maintained for the mutual benefit of these interests.

Conservatives don’t understand the notion of balancing interests.  For them, profit getting is the only interest of value.  Everything else is unimportant.

To my above post about the Bush administration being led out of the WH in handcuffs, add the following: to the sound of a German “umpah” band in lederhosen playing “March on Christian Soldiers.”  LOL.

To the PAID TROLL under the alias BUD:

If I wanted to address mercury levels in “Thou Shalt Not Kill” I would’ve done it, so quit being a fuckwad and trying to change the subject. Telling a songwriter that his song is about the wrong subject is not how you critique a song. Do you think when Dianne Warren asked Peter Cetera for his thoughts on “Baby What a Big Surprise” he said, “It’s not about how hard it is to say ‘I’m sorry’—scrap it?” I want feedback on the song I WROTE not the song you THINK I should write. If you want me to lend my songwriting talent to a certain cause then ask politely, don’t slag every song that’s not about that issue.

United States Posted by Lefty on Jul 14, 2005 at 4:32 PM

    The True Lefty,
Thanks for the support. I was unaware of that provision in the Patriot Act, but it is duly noted as another example of right-wing hypocrisy.

United States Posted by Bud on Jul 14, 2005 at 4:34 PM

    To the Fake Lefty,
I do not appreciate the immature slurs, but I will address your concerns nevertheless. I am critiquing your position on abortion altogether, not the song you made up. To point out that the right has glaring holes in its argument is neither improper nor inappropriate.

United States Posted by Bud on Jul 14, 2005 at 4:40 PM

    Bud,

My understanding is that it didn’t get through.  It was part of a bigger amendment to shield drug companies from liability arising out of small pox and other bioweapon immunizations, and was ultimately withdrawn.  When the issue of themarisol (mercury) in immunizations became more well known (I think the FDA announced a recall), it triggered a litigation feeding frenzy (and correctly so).  So, the conservative corporate pimps in the HoR, tried to sneak a little tort reform into the patriot act.

The drug dealers still use themarisol in childhood vaccines in other countries whose drug oversight isn’t as rigorous as in the US (he said facetiously, LHFAO).

United States Posted by Lefty on Jul 14, 2005 at 5:03 PM

Left dude I wasn’t coping your ummmmmm song I was ridiculing its message.
By the way WTF does your song have to do with this article?
If you want to self gratify get your own web site but you go ahead and totally ignore what the message in my posting is conveying, after all it’s the only way you can look in the mirror and not abort yourself.
No one, not one man or one woman walking on the face of this earth has any idea of any real knowledge of when a fetus becomes a thinking human being however we can all be pretty certain that all the innocent people being killed by one way or another are pretty surely living thinking human beings.
So go ahead and make your false argument about something that no one really knows about while ignoring all the real living world facts.

The bible is a book written by men, manipulated by men, and edited by men to control men.
What Jesus taught was for the living and not for men to twist and manipulate.
Take what Jesus taught from the bible and only that, and toss the rest.

Life is real. Jesus was a teacher of life’s living.
Christ teachings are not for making a living they are a way to live.

P.S. Oh yeah Lefty, your song sucks. You asked.

United States Posted by MaxCat on Jul 14, 2005 at 5:49 PM

One, It took almost no time at all for “Lefty” to seize the thread and convert it into a debate on one of the “no win at no cost” issues that the right has been using throughout the Bush administration. Abortion, gay marriage, affirmative action, etc. can have no winning side because they are based on emotions and “moral values”, which inherently means that both sides of the arguement can generally be seen by the majority sitting on the fence. The debate over these issues has been going on for decades and will doubtlessly continue to do so.

What is being overlooked by most of the left side in the ongoing struggle for the future of this country is that these petty unwinnable spats tie down the opposition’s troops, cost nothing to operate and leave the puppetmasters free to continue on with their gameplan without interference.

No matter that the front man is a grinning idiot, who measures up poorly in intelligence comparisons with fly larva. The men behind the throne are intelligent and their plan is more than likely going along one of the tracks which they considered carefully before starting this trip.

I will offer just one example, otherwise this comment will get way to long, TORTURE!!! There is no advantage to the American policy of torturing detainees except one. A never ending war against a nebulous and unyeilding enemy which will continue for decades an allow the “have mores” to either establish their dynasty of privledge, or leave the situation in such a mess that the opposition, once it is back in power, will be force to spend the next 50 years cleaning up the carpet stains.

Either way they end up with the money, which is afterall, the only thing they really beleive in.

If you are interested in the “plan” of the men behind the smiling idiot, check out the website of the “Project for the New American Century” founded by William Kristol, neo-con, fascist, chickenhawk and pseudo journalist.  The plan is to use the U.S. military to take over the world.  Google it and see for yourself.

One more thing, I didn’t hijack this thread.  It was - Michael Hardesty, aka CatMax, Martin, Steverino, Mikey, Peter, Jack Barnes, etc., etc., who is a paid conservative TROLL who posts under numerous names (including hijacking other posters’ screen names), and has conversations with himself in order to disrupt liberal discourse. While we little people squabble and kick in the dirt all the while the powers to be are pocketing our future. We must seems like a bunch of little piggies in the pens to these people. They toss in the garbage and we fight like heel to see who gets to eat it.
We must put aside our differences, unite and break out the ball bats for a good old ass whoppin time of our own.
The enemy is not my brother, the enemy is my oppressor.
Just how far down into the dark will our brothers have to go before they are forced to look up and see the light?
We the people can work it out, we the people must unite. It’s not blue or red, it’s our America, enough said.

United States Posted by Jessica Clark on Jul 17, 2005 at 1:26 AM

    Jessica,

I believe it was Margarete (or possibly Liz) who first alerted me to this Michael Hardesty character.  I haven’t seen any posts by them lately either.  In addition to his tell tail formating (usually, but not always, he only utilizes the left half of the text field), he can be identified by his writing style, the use of words like “wordsalad,” profanity, incessant references to Ayn Rand and libertarianism, blatant bigotry toward Jews, the use of multiple names through which he has conversations with himself, and hijacking of others’ screen names.

Anyway, after Margarete disclosed his real name I did a google search and found that he does the same thing on other liberal message boards.  Quite pathetic really.

Clearly his sole purpose is to prevent this forum from being an effective idea market by constantly hijacking names and threads, interjecting off topic attacks, basically picking fights with other posters and clogging up the threads with nonsense.

I am convinced that he gets paid to do this by a Tom Delay type.  He spends too much time here (and other forums) to have any other job.

His postings are unmistakable, once you recognize what he’s doing.  I think it would be effective enough if everyone knew who he was and just ignored him.  And, it would really aggrivate him.  He hates being ignored. LOL.

He also hijacks others’ names, like mine, Bud’s, Margaret, Liz, and many others. You’d know that if you read the numerous posts on that subject.

    It’s not my song PPF.

United States Posted by Lefty on Jul 18, 2005 at 12:24 PM

Hey None, admit it: you’re a pussy who only likes one or two genres of metal and shits on all others.

I could stoop to your level and point out everything I loathe in your precious sub-genres of goth and doom metal, but I’ll take the high road as usual.  Do Heavy Metal (as well as your chosen sub-genres) proud and show it the respect and recognition it deserves. Think about why you truly don’t like a genre before you begin to condemn it. Speak with other Metalheads before you wield an uninformed opinion, and most importantly - take the time to actually listen the other genres of Metal before you “fly off the handle” about any one of them.

You might just learn something about Metal, and perhaps even about yourself and the Metal genres you love. Perhaps one day you’ll begin to actually like Power Metal or Black Metal …. and you should never balk at the opportunity to expand your Heavy Metal horizons!

Please be more considerate of the entire metal community—as an inclusive whole to hate and destroy the enemy of the legions.

What does this thread have to do with political cartooning or the interview I did with Ward? I’m very confused here…

United States Posted by Mikhaela Reid on Jul 18, 2005 at 9:34 PM

    Mikhaela,
You are right to be confused, but the reason why the thread has been so off-topic is because of the posting by some conservative troll who is trying to disrupt rational discourse. In my first posting I addressed the article but I felt obligated to repudiate the rants by the fake Lefty. Then someone began hijacking my screen name and I had to deal with that. If we can stop this troll, then we can have decent discourse.

United States Posted by Bud on Jul 19, 2005 at 5:02 PM

Who cares if a ‘troll’ has infultriated this virtual discussion? I didn’t even like ‘Lord of the Rings’, but I was happy when the man who is married to Exene from X killed that bad troll in the castle. A troll can be good somtimes, for variety. I prefer the hackneyed discourse that occurs on ITT, to the sanitized twaddle that is likely to be the norm after the registation and censorship agreement one has to sign to register weeds out the charming (and sometimes not so) riff-raff. Lefty, who knew you were such a metalhead? I am also a fan, of the tech/death variety. I just listened to Gorguts yesterday. Will someone tell Mikhaela Reid that her vanity is not very charming. What kind of person would post a comment on their own article complaining that the previous posts were off the topic of ‘the interview I did with Ward’. Lame brain vain pain.

United States Posted by poopooface on Jul 20, 2005 at 10:27 PM

We purged several hundred comments from one poster posing as various people in this forum and actually having long running discussions with him/herself.

Apologies for the confusion this may cause in some posts responding to this troll.  To resolve the situation, we’ve been forced to require registration before posting, along with a real email address so we can hold people accountable.

Additionally, we are in communication with the individual’s ISP to have their identity exposed so that those who feel they have been slandered can take appropriate action.

United States Posted by seamus on Jul 20, 2005 at 11:15 PM

    Lefty,

Do you REALLY want feedback on your song?

Well, first of all, you missed all sorts of opportunities to rhyme.  You may be able to get away without it in blank verse, but nobody SINGS blank verse.

Second, drop the bible verse references.  If the “baby killers” care about the bible verses, they have probably made their choices based on other understandings of scripture.  And if they don’t before they start reading, they won’t after they’re done.

Third and most important—- this isn’t a song, it’s a polemic.  And nobody sings polemics either.

You need to move over to Gush Bimbo’s board.  You may be left-handed, but you’re definitely not left-leaning.
