With Chicago’s Mayor Daley embroiled in scandal, Jesse Jackson Jr. eyes the 2007 race

By Ethan Michaeli

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is in trouble. After a smooth run of 17 years, Daley is suddenly facing an aggressive federal prosecutor and a growing number of potential political challengers. A total of 30 City of Chicago employees and contractors have been indicted and 21 convicted on charges that range from stealing asphalt to trading city contracts for bribes to… return to article

Fuck the Democrats, Daley is a perfect example of how the egotistic, corporatist, Democrats are not fit to govern.

    Song: I Voted for Nader
(Download it for free at www.anti-flag.com)
Poignantly phrased to shift the burden of the blame
Sick and tired but you keep on marching in their same old parade
Accuse, construe - dare I even venture - abuse,
Frustrations channelled through the paths worn well with use

    Binary politics, packaged sound bite rhetoric;
And you think it makes no difference?
    Watered down party lines, beholden to corporate ties;
    And you still inquire why?

Maybe you can tell me when my vote was decided for me?
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh
I guess the enemy of the enemy, is still the fucking enemy
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh.

    And one more time around,
    The played out reasons why:
“Jack knife the diesel to let the bicycle pass on by”
    Reproaching failed attempts
    At restoring representative government
This poli-earthquake is long over due

    Plastic smiles and candy lies,
    Prestige built on family ties;
And you find it so offensive.
    Dirty mouths and muddied hands,
    Promises written in sand;
    Still every election you comply?

Maybe you can tell me when my vote was decided for me?
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh
I guess the enemy of the enemy, is still the fucking enemy
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh.

A pointed finger, a furrowed brow,
Relying on the way’s it’s been,
To get us through the now
A waning courage, just play it safe.
Well this is where safe’s landed us: The problems of today!

Reach out a broken hand! - You have the right to make demands!
Reach out a broken hand! - We have the right to make demands!

Maybe you can tell me when my vote was decided for me?
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh
I guess the enemy of the enemy, is still the fucking enemy
    Oh, oh… Oh ,oh.

Mayor Daley’s corruption was a personal choice.  His political affiliation didn’t make him a crook any more that being a crook prompted him to be a Democrat.  Democrats have nothing on Republicans when it comes to the depth and breadth of their respective corruptions.

Bottom line - If Ralph Nader really wanted to be President, he would have run as a Democrat.  His platform is virtually identical the the Democratic platform.

Dear Lefty: Come on Naders platform being virtually identical to the Dems is ridiculous!
    1. Nader is for a living wage
    2. Nader is for universal health care
    3. Nader was the only anti war campaign in 2004, and dont even say Kerry was anti war you know better than to say that
    4. Nader does not accept corporate donations unlike the corporate whores that are the Dems
    5. Most importantly Nader is a true independent. Wouldn’t you honestly like to finally see this happen instead of Dems and Reps having to worry about answering to the heads of the party
    6. The Democrats are anti-democratic spending millions of dollars in several states to bring suit to keep Nader off the ballot, and thus drain the funds of the Nader campaign and not allow the public to vote for whom they choose
    7. Nader is not a career politician and thus we could see a person with a non profit background gain power, maybe just for once
    8. Didnt Clinton (a Dem) back NAFTA? So how has that worked out for us?
    9. Please Please Please explain how the Dems have been partners in the Drug War which has cost us billions and arrested millions, and has affected minorities especially, while Nader is against the illegal wasteful Drug War makes them similar
    10. Nader is fully for campaign finance reform, the Dems are not (although many are). I must say here that I really like John McCain and if I was too vote for a major party candidate it would be him.

In These Times you once told me that you told the stories that the corporate media doesnt tell, well thats partly true but by becoming a whore for the Dems (look at the number of recent articles that deal with how the Dems can improve compared to how we as progressives in general can improve) we have too wonder what about the stories you dont tell?
    1. When has www.inthesetimes.com spoken of the horrific drug war? Please someone tell me the last time its gotta be at least many months if not a year
    2. What about the fight for representation in Congress for the mostly black district of columbia (more info at www.dcvote.org)
Think about these two more too come
And please think of your own and post them lets turn www.inthesetimes.com back to a proud liberal progressive read and not something which the Democrats stamp of approval is needed for

    NaderRaider,

You would vote for John McCain after he confessed that he places his loyalty to his political party above his loyalty to his country?  John McCain lost all credibility when he backed Bush following Bush’s despicable and disgraceful smear campaign against him in 2000, declaming his loyalty to his party.  This, after Karl Rove ran a campaign in the 2000 S. Carolina primaries, accusing McCain of cowardice in combat and as a prisoner of war, and trying to enflame the bigoted passions of the S. Carolina electorate with push polls asking if the voter was aware that McCain fathered an illegitimate black child.

Knowing that, how could anyone other than an idiot or a crook support McCain?  Your motives are now in question.  You are a republican troll trying to divide and conquer, no?

Certainly, the Democratic representatives have their spineless and their chameleons, but all of the issues your raise above are supported by a majority of the Democratic leadership and constituency.

its about time daley is getting into trouble.  His famiy is the most corrupt, and he has done nothing for the people of chicago.  Daley, worse than other democrats, heolps those who are wealthy and does not take into account the low income residents.  His worst action was when He got rid of the housing projects without having a place to house the residents.  He has stolen money for years and is finally getting what he deserves.  Jesse Jackson Sr. is a self serving civil right leader, lets just hope his son is better then he.

What does industry watchdog Nader have to do with the Chicago mayoral race? And what part of a Jesse Jackson, Jr. candidacy doesn’t support progessive ideals? Fek Nader: his song is out of tune.

United States Posted by Tim Christopher on Aug 4, 2005 at 6:15 PM

    Tim,

I have to voice my disagreemnt.  Ralph Nader is one of the greatest, smartest and most honorable and most humble Americans who ever lived.  That’s what he has to do with Mayor Daley.  He has done more for the little guy (in his case consumers), and more to fight corporate corruption than any American who ever lived.  (That’s what he has to do with Mayor Daley).  Ralph Nader invented consumer advocacy.  I wholeheartedly agree with virtually every stance he’s taken as, I believe, do most Americans if they are being honest with themselves.

Why someone as smart as Nader has chosen to fracture the Democratic party (certainly no significant number of GOPer’s voted for him), which supports most of his views, and run for president, after the age of 70, is beyond my understanding.  I have immence respect for Nader’s intellect wisdom, and I trust that he has some good faith reasons behind his actions.  But, for the life of me, I don’t know what they are.

If Nader had run as a Democrat in 2000 and 2004, I would have supported him.  And if he runs as a Democrat in 2008, I will support him then.

United States Posted by Lefty on Aug 4, 2005 at 7:04 PM

The fact remains, however, that Nader isn’t considering running for mayor of Chicago. What IS pertinent is whether you would support a Jesse Jackson, Jr. candidacy and how the outcome of such a race would effect progessive politics across the land as we count down to November 2008, when the earth moves again.

United States Posted by Tim Christopher on Aug 4, 2005 at 7:23 PM

    Dear Lefty:
Ive heard you time and time again accuse people of being republican trolls, or neo cons trying to divide and conquer maybe in the past you were right but I am none of these things. Its sad that Dems think that all liberals have too follow them blindly and anyone who supports an independent or speaks bad of the Dems is a republican.

United States Posted by NaderRaider on Aug 4, 2005 at 10:46 PM

    NaderRaider,

And like a typical conservative, you like to use false premises - your characterization of “Dems.”  Unlike republicans, NR, Dems don’t really give a damn about being Dems, they care about their liberty and public policy that places the interests of public health safety and welfare above the interest of corporate profits.  And, as a practical matter, Democrats understand that splitting the liberal movement into factions plays right into the fascist republican’s hands.

The practical reality is that the Democratic party is the only entity with the resources to compete with the conservative fascists for votes.  Without the Democratic party, the fascists would have no competition whatsoever.

United States Posted by Lefty on Aug 5, 2005 at 3:14 AM

    Tim,

I’m flattered that you think that whether I would support JJJr. is pertinent.  I don’t know enough about his priorities to give an answer.  Having said that, knowing that he is a son of a liberal, I would vote for him if the other choice was a republican.

As for Mr. Daley, I don’t know why anyone would thing that he would be different than his Daddy.  (Hmmm, seems I’ve said that before).

United States Posted by Lefty on Aug 5, 2005 at 3:21 AM

If Nader had stayed out of the 2000 presidential race Gore would have carried Florida unambiguously and would have become President. He would now, most likely, be in his second term. As a result we would not be bogged down in the Iraq quagmire. American soldiers and Iraqi women and children would not be getting killed and injured. The Supreme Court would not be in the process of being filled by right wing anti-choice pro-corporate crony judges, the Federal Government would not be running huge deficits, and programs for the poor would not have been cut.

Ralph Nader has done a tremedous amount of harm to this country. He has shown how much damage well-intentioned but clueless ideologues can do if they are at the wrong place at the right time.

Any dynasty, such as the Daleys loses track of what it is there to do in the first place, GOVERN for the benefit of the people! Daley and his father have always shown a preference to cozying up to the establishment rather than actually helping people. I think Jesse Jackson, Jr. would make an excellent mayor of Chicago.
