This story is prominently featured in above the fold, front page stories of the Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times today (I suppose I could keep listing the other thousands of other papers that carry it if you want). You can go to a “newsstand” and see these “paper publications” that normal people read everyday. Well, but then again, the WSJ distributes to how many again? Compare that to the mighty ITT!
It made the 3 network anchor news shows last night, will again tonight (readers watch), and has been on cable news outlets all week. And if any other posters want links to the bazillions of major news websites that have been carrying please let me know.

I’ve never heard of “In These Times” before. I’m thinking it must be a satirical paper like The Onion, but if this column is on the level, and the product of a real live professor at the University of Michigan, it would tend to explain why one tends to associate that school with a football team, Gerald Ford, and little else.

From mammy and Uncle Tom to minstrel characters of the past and present, the subject/object binary which shapes American consciousness continues to situate black people as objectified (along with the sexualization of women) because they are sutured in their objecthood, while white men remain veiled by the cloak of subjecthood. Their crimes are rarely objectified in the “carnival of the visual.”
So, as Douglas proposes, why so little coverage of the Enron guys?
In short, white men are still granted the white supremacist privilege of escaping public scrutiny. They are still portrayed as sacrosanct, in spite of their abominable crimes.

OJ, Jackson and Kobie have something else in common besides color — they are celebrities. Look at the British Royal family and all their detailed coverage. Hollywood gets as much space in the supermarket as dog food.
IMO one of the main reasons race is a continuing problem is people keep talking it up. It’s like when someone says, “Don’t think of a pink elephant,” you weren’t — until then.
If we didn’t color code everything we’d think of it less often. When I was in Alabama in the military in 1963 there were Colored Only and White Only signs all over the place. Those have been replaced by the Black Entertainment Channel, The Hispanic Channel, The Black Pages, The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
If you get to know a person, by name and as an individual you can just forget all that crap.

Of course the media latched on to OJ, MJ and Kobe ... they are superstars/entertainers. OJ was one of the best RB’s in the history of the NFL. MJ was the biggest pop singer ever. And Kobe was one of the top NBA players ever, at that time he the best player ever to come straight out of high school to the NBA.
Also, the crimes of OJ, MJ and Kobe are bigger. Murder, Child Molestation and Rape.

Lay and Skilling conspired to lie to and steal from the people who worked for them and invested in Enron - thousands and thousands of them, uncountable numbers according to Google. These people were counting on their Enron investments to see them through retirement, and now they are left with nothing except a very different retirement than the one they planned, and less time to rebuild their nest eggs.
Are you saying that Lay and Skilling deliberately Lying To and Stealing From thousands and thousands of employees and investors for their own personal gain is somehow morally okay? Enron is in the shadows because mainstream media needs to “handle” the issue of the Cheney/Bush connection. Kenny boy was the guy they chose as their “expert” on energy and the absence of that story should tell you all you need to know. However, there is lots more starting with the California debacle which implicates these folks in a criminal act. I can’t imagine either of those losers - Lay or Skilling - taking it upon themselves to bury California so blatantly without the blessing of the Bush/Cheney energy cartel. This deal has been made and fixed and there is nothing that anyone will do about it.

Media would have done a thorough “background check” and cast doubt on every (if any) redeeming quality anyone ever said he possessed
we would have heard more of the stories from the people (especially little old white ladies that have to keep working now instead of retiring) that Ken Lay ripped off
length of sentence and possible prison destinations would have been speculated on before the case went to jury
If Ken Lay was Black there would have been some “violent episode” attributed to him
Bail of any amount would have been denied and he would have been escorted to court in prison garb and handcuffed
If Ken Lay was Black he’d have been convicted in the court of public opinion a couple days after Enron’s collapse.

There are many kinds of discrimination with varying degrees of pain, disgust, embarrassment — my business (advertising graphics) depended on a pretty good imagination, so I can maybe get a little bit of what you think and feel, but never the same.
The lack of imagination still sometimes surprises me, but many people, even intelligent people just cannot relate to the invisible or intangible. Or will try to put themselves mentally into someone else’s shoes.
All I was trying to say (also from my work) you can’t sell something, a product or an idea, if you piss off your customer. That is why I see BET, quotas, etc. not as fixing a list of generational wrongs, but working against ignoring color and accepting people individually.

It is my belief that if we are ever going to change the relationship for the better for all of us, we MUST stop using the same old patterns of us and them, black and white, and I know the BET, Black Chamber of Commerce or whatever are a turnoff to many.
I can understand the reason for them, but still see it as an overall hindrance to fixing the problem long term.
“All men are created equal.” “Liberty and justice for all.” if stated as goals instead of pretending they are fact, make sense to me. Goals are only reachable if all Americans (or at least most) will work at them.
