Michael Moore Stars at Academy Awards

By Joel Bleifuss

On day five of the war, it was supremely ironic that network television viewers had to tune into the 75th Annual Academy Awards ceremony to hear voices that questioned the wisdom of the Bush administration. Rumblings of protest began on Saturday. At the Independent Spirit Awards (the award ceremony for independent films) in Santa Monica, California, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the star… return to article

Thank you for covering this.  It always scares me when those who champion democracy don’t publish dissenting voices like Mike’s.  Support of an illegal war, silencing of dissent and attacks on opposition are acts of totalitarian states, and not worthy of the champions of democracy Amerians are.

For those who don’t understand yet that this is a war for making the big buck:
If your children, houses, ugly trucks and suv’s would be bombed, your dumb heads perforated by bullets, your flesh ripped by shell explosions in your own yard, you would finally see how it is when a bunch of rednecks with nothing more than the words of a liar president attack your country and transform it in hell on earth. All the war profiteers that fill their pockets with money right now, need morons like you to voice for a war that you idiots don’t even understand. Is not Iraq or Sadam that commited the 9/11 crime but is your own politicians and secret services that you are so proud of. They CREATED Bin Laden. You brainwashed morons, go and drive your stinky trucks, lay the whole day on your messy couches, watch TV and scratch your butts. You will be slaves to the rest of your lifes and think is freedom.

At least someone in America is awake to and afraid of what Dubya and his cronies are up to. Congratulations Michael for telling the truth.

Why is it that so much of the criticism of his speech is limited to his weight and personal appearance? Can’t the authors find any real arguements? They epitomise the sterotypical American, blissfully ignorant of the world outside their own shores.

Well done George Bush, for creating such a wondeful climate for Al Queda to flourish and grow. There will be thoudsands of new volunteers enraged by this illegal invasion. But that’s OK because now you’ll be free to restict the civil liberties of your own people further. Innocent until proven quilty? Right to legal representation? forget it if you’re a “suspected terrorist”

ps Why is it immoral to show dead and captured Americans. Crisped Iraqi’s on the highway of death and lines of Iraqi POW’s are acceptable.

I happen to agree with Mr. Moore, but wish he would have exercised a little more discretion.
It becomes too easy to discount the ONLY voice of reason being presented in the American mass media, when that voice is spraying vitriol.
Mr. Bush is not the enemy.  To “demonize” him is to engage in the same sort of oversimplification the mass media employs.  We should intervene with compassion, the way we intervene with a friend who is making a terrible mistake, not with rage and malice.  To respond with rage is to participate in this insanity.
Take to the streets with conviction and silent protest.  The exploited peoples of the world are counting on us.

Canada Posted by Tim on Mar 25, 2003 at 9:55 PM

I am SIMPLY astonished by a comment like: ìwhat is illegal about this war? it was authorized in 3 separate UN resolutions and by both houses of the US Congress. Don’t you read?î

Never mind that this person thinks that whatever is legitimate as long as both houses in the US congress authorize it, obviously, he got an idea from somewhere that the UN authorized this war and he is asking us “don’t you read?” What on earth, is he reading?!

Whether Mr. Moore is right or wrong, or how many more or less booed or applauded him maybe secondary. The most tragic and frightening thing is that America, a nation that is supposed to be the ìfreestî and have ìthe mostî in the world, simply lacks objective media due to the concentration of its ownership and therefore, control. I know that many mindful Americans realize this problem but then perhaps, this difficult time is also the prime time for you to push it further and let others know it.  Perhaps, a forum like this is one of the potential gateways to more encompassing information. (Apparently Stan at least has an access to the internet..)

Kurt Loder thinks the Oscar crowd is Michael Moore’s “natural constituency.” The Oscars are set up specifically to keep people like Michael Moore OFF the stage.

PLEASE!!!  The media in the US is brainwashing everyone?  Is that the only excuse you pathetic liars can come up with?  Anyone with a half a brain knows a high percentage of Americans get their information from a from a variety of sources including the internet and they STILL support Bush.
Oh, but YOU understand more than anyone else what the “truth” is and the “truth” is that this war is about dollars and oil while the media feeds lies to all the stupid Americans who can’t think for themselves.  Can you stop being a patronizing unoriginal pea-brained lib-lab for one fucking minute?
Let’s compare: how much “truth” do you think the average Iraqi is getting from his government?  or North Korean from his?  Oh, that’s right, the only evil in this world is coming from America and the US media just plays along...get real you pussies!

I have to laugh at the rantings against Mike.

If you any of you have done even one quarter of the work he has done for the underprivileged and poor of America, then you are truly decent human beings.

I have yet to see any solid critique of his work - just the usual emotional bluster of people upset at a challenge to their cosy world view.

Why are all these liberals critisizing Bush? Don’t just assume the reasons - The people who oppose the war have heard all the reasons FOR the war - If you don’t really know why it’s being opposed then start off from:

College Grad writes:  “I received my bachelor’s degree from a great, private liberal arts university after attending three years of private high school. right now I am in a position making $25 grand a year.
My boyfriend, on the other hand, never did go to college, yet is currently employed as a network security engineer making close to $100 grand a year.
tell me again what difference college makes?”

Obviously a college degree is not the greatest determinate of subsequent wealth, success, recognition, or respect.  As I pointed out in a previous post, the greatest determinate is wisdom(which is evidenced in one’s character).

Your personal choice to earn 25k a year is obviously not a reflection of your intellect, but a reflection of (May I presume?) industry break in costs or public service costs.  As for your hold on wisdom and exercise of it I am in no position to make any reasonable assesment of that.

My bringing up Mr Moore’s comments on Mr. Bush’s intelligence is that a college degree and an advanced degree (followed by subsequent sucess) is a good indicator of intellect and thus Mr. Moore’s comments resound poorly.

Here?? Fear? No way! We live in oblivion. How can anyone boo a man working for the the cause of all causes, peace and freedom? How can that happen? And how can anyone agree with gunning people down? With the war, with wars period? Then the Screen Actors Guild wants to fire people who speak against the administration, meaning they are pro peace? What? And what a stupid phrase! How can anyone NOT BE pro peace. How far are we from imprisonment now? These people that are ...brave and courageous enough to report or speak out for freedom and peace. Bless them… Oh, bless them.

Michael has the right to say what is on his mind.  That is the gift and right of being in America.  However, the platform in which he gave his opinion was not not correct.  I like what he said but do these words now matter?  Our troops are there, the damage is done, and the war will go on.  Now is the time for solidarity and stand together and support our soldiers.

I have the strongest respect for Michael Moore and the courage he has to stand up for what he believes, and what most Americans believe.  Just because the media senses conflict, or covers negative talk about our government does not allow the right to censor nor drown out his empowering speech.  His voice represents the larger whole and this country needs to stop being afraid of their angst about our leadership and take action.  Thanks to Michael Moore for using his opportunity and fame in the world to broadcast majority views that are undercut by the media.

United States Posted by Emily on Mar 26, 2003 at 11:37 AM

It has become very difficult for the voices of intellectuals and liberals to be heard in this country, and blind allegiance to any government is dangerous and un-American.  I support Moore’s views and especially his right to speak at any and all forums.

United States Posted by Phil on Mar 26, 2003 at 11:45 AM

What!?! Talk about ficticious, actors...we watch them because they portray what we as “real” people are not. Michael Moore did not stand up once, nor did he voice his opinion, to speak about the 79 day bombing of Serbia, how quickly we forget. Was that ficticious? We can be against specific wars, that is our right as Americans, but remember, if there were no wars, we would not be living in America, we would still be under the rule of England! One last thing, I’m still waiting for Alec Baldwin to move out if the U.S., he threatened this if Bush won....where will they pay him as much as he makes in Hollywood?

Thanks for the story, which I accessed through xymphora. Why is common sense so hard to come by these days? I suggest that the US Congress award GWB about $100. With that he can buy a shovel and personally bury every US citizen sent home in a body bag from this evil war. The same goes for Blair in the UK. Peace is freedom - violence is slavery.

France Posted by Pete on Mar 26, 2003 at 1:07 PM

It is very interersting that freedom of speech is exactly ONE of the things that this war on Iraq is suppose to restore.  The people (i.e. boycott-hollywood.us) who are trying to argue that hollywood star should not exercise the right to the freedom of speech are sending a clear message that the only time it is okay to exercise freedom of speech is when your voice is can not be heard and when you do not have a forum to get your message out.  I for on APPLAUD MM for his corageous quest for question that yet to be address in America. One of the most important things differentiates this country from a regime like Saddam’s regime is that evey citizen has the right to the freedom of speech.  This right does not end due to your occupation, view, race, gender, or access to a public forum.  People who wish to censor this right are following the same mentality of people like the president of iraq (Saddam).  One of the reason we are in Iraq is to defend all human rights.  Trying to control the freedom of speech opens the door for a regime like the oppressive one in Iraq to come to power.  I think that there has been enough oppression that americans have and continue just closed there eye to in this country.  This is the age of information I challenge all american to impower themselves and get informed. People who support censorship of the freedom of speech are supporting oppession.  The same type of oppression that Sadamm inflicts and one can see the evidence of what that type of oppessive system has brought the world.  To question authority enables a healthy checks and balance system.  God bless american!

As much as I dislike Streisand’s politics, I agree that I am glad I live in a country where “Artists?” has the right to voice an opinion.  This same country also gives me the right to voice my displeasure over tirates like Moore made the other night. I also have the right to boycott those actors, etc., whom I feel are hurting our efforts in the war by giving solice to the enemy. Moore may be right; Hollywood may be on his side, but not the rest of America where current polls have shown that OVER 60% of the population supports our one, true president, George W. Bush and his efforts in the war.  His proclivities were showing from the very beginning when he talked about a “fictitious election”!  Get over it...your liberal friend Gore lost the election. (ALL of the recounts have proven this to be correct.) I’d like to say that this was a truly refreshing story.  I did not get to see this part of the Oscars and came online to find an article to tell me about Michael Moore’s speech, which was all the buzz in my school (Boston U.) the next day.  The response of about 9 in 10 BU students was supportive of what Moore had to say.  I believe he is an excellent spokesperson for many of the ideas of liberal America.  I have just begun reading his book, Stupid White Men, and it was WELL worth the buy (and I have only read the Intro and the first two chapters)!  Thank you, Darcy

For those who doubt Moore’s words about the election, they should read chapter one of STUPID WHITE MEN.  The “fix” was on back in ‘99 when Catherine Harris and brother Jeb schemed to have thousands removed from the FL voting rolls, a large percentage of them minorities!
Michael Moore is no loose cannon.  He’s just a man speaking the truth, daring, challenging America to wake up, turn off the auto-pilot, and, perhaps, think.  This war is not business as usual!

And another thing:  Bill O-Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and others of their ilk, they are entertainers too! (If you can locate it on the web, I recommend to eveyone that they read George Clooney’s letter to O’Reilly after the the latter’s remarks about him after the first 9/11 fundraiser. Quite entertaining.) Nothing is more American than to express opinions, popular or otherwise.  Those looking to squelch free speech, they are the unpatriotic ones.

I’ve been a fan of Moore since I heard him speak at a labor conference in 1997. Though I sometimes wish his commentary were a little more nuanced, it’s refreshing to hear from someone who is suspicious of authority (elected/selected officials, media) while participating in pop culture. It’s a weird method of operating, but it works-- I know people who have never heard of Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn but who have at least a passing familiarity with Moore’s documentaries. I think, as evidenced by the conversation here, Moore has the potential to become a major force in public debate.

United States Posted by Rachel on Mar 27, 2003 at 12:07 AM

    To be short -

1 - I agree with the freedom of speech Mr. Moore exercised at the Academy Awards.

2 - To the opponents of Mr. Moore, it is possible to hold an intellectual debate without discrediting someone’s education, weight, appearance, or personality.

3 - To the supporters of Mr. Moore,
it is possible to hold an intellectual debate without discrediting people who had nothing to do with the comment. (i.e. - though Mr. Moore’s comments were about President Bush, we don’t need to be insulting President Bush to argue Mr. Moore’s statements as valid)

So, for those trying to make a point against Mr. Moore, quit the mud slinging.  All it does is invalidate what you say and get your hands dirty.

For those trying to make a point in agreement with Mr. Moore, quit the shielding.  As Mr. Moore had the freedom to speak his mind, so do the mud slingers to whom I just spoke.

Lastly, in the immortal words of Rodney King “Can’t we all just get along?”

United States Posted by Joe on Mar 27, 2003 at 12:08 AM

And OY VEY I say again.  See, Joe, we canNOT all get along, which is why all of this is so cruelly funny.  ...  People have wars because we disagree on how the world should be run by our leaders; people disagree on how the world should be run because we are different from each other… It would be nice not to have wars, and I, for one, am against this one because well, this is who I am.  However, such possibility seems both very far away ...  and in a weird way, not very welcoming.  To remove the wars, we would have to remove our differences, and then the world we’d live in would be really really REALLY boring.  Small price to pay, perhaps, for peace, but then, is it?

United States Posted by Yelena on Mar 27, 2003 at 12:14 AM

I thought it was a great story and forwarded the link around. I feel sorry for the people who want to shoot the messenger (perhaps literally) here in this forum. I don’t normally agree with bumper-sticker philosophies, but I think this one sums up Michael’s message, for the poor spellers and those of the monosyllabic persuasion among us: If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.
    Please begin...now.

United States Posted by Scott on Mar 27, 2003 at 12:16 AM

Thanks for telling the entire story.  It’s so hard to get the truth from our state-run media any more I had lost hope in ever hearing it again.  Don’t let them bring back McCarthyism disguised as “patriotism”.

United States Posted by Jo on Mar 27, 2003 at 1:00 AM

I stand firmly behind Michael Moore and anyone else, for that matter, who devotes themselves so thoroughly to the finding out the truth.  We need brave warriors such as this to stand up for us, as well as, give the working class, the poor and the abused a voice!!  Whoever believes that the US Government, Major Corporations and all of their affiliate Media Companies should be there in good trust to help us, serve us and provide truth not propaganda, speak out proudly against these abuses and never stop!  It is now time to resist the wave of madness and Light the way for Peace, Truth and Freedom for Us All!

I don’t understand how a country that is first and foremost a democracy can act so harshly, with such brute force and remain so stubborn and close-minded, and yet maintain such mainstream support, and they say were radicals?  Lets not start acting like a bunch of fascists here!  What happened to the democratic process, which includes all of our voices?  Why is it that anyone who disagrees with this war is considered communists, terrorists, or flaky radicals?  We are human beings with hearts and minds.  And, we believe that there is great injustice happening abroad and here at home.  We want to help those who donít have a voice!

Itís amazing, I have never been so judged by such intense and angry individuals as I am now that the propaganda machine is in full effect.  I guess no one can think for himself or herself.  Why are we being judged here?  You know itís a tradition in America to question your leaders.  It is not illegal, let me repeat, it is not illegal to do so.  I feel like so many people are brainwashed well past the point of no return by the continuous, ongoing media barrage of pro-war, bro-bush, yet, so dead set against people of conscious where their agenda is to help everyone see there are more sides to this story than our government is willing to share with us.  As I see it, many people hate us protesting and disagreeing with the government and media because they can’t handle the fact that the best country on Earth is deceiving them.

I hope anyone that thinks socialism and human rights is “commie-crap” read something other than the HUAC Tribunals of 1947!  Please, don’t kill democracy through your own hatred and spite.  We all should be a little more willing to take into consideration the comments and opinions of others.  Then, put all the pieces together and get the whole story, not just your own!

Michael Moore is more patriotic than Miramax. I have it on authority that “Bowling for Columbine” was screened for Miramax—and rejected on orders of the studio’s chairman, Harvey Weinstein. Since the World Trade Center went down Miramax has become the most right-wing company in Hollywood.

As for Kurt Loder? MTV is owned by Viacom, which also owns CBS. Those channels tailor content to fit US government policy. Am I glad I got rid of my TV 5 years ago!

United States Posted by Jingo Jingo on Mar 27, 2003 at 11:41 AM

It really didn’t come as asurprise that Michael Moore made the statements he did at the Oscars. Anyone familiar with his work can see this is completely in character.
I find it very disturbing that people can’t even listen to another point of view and must character assasinate someone who thinks differently than they do.
“Reacting” is one of the easiest things to do- I think we all need to challenge ourselves to have intelligent debates and respect different points of view, whether we agree with them or not.
I personally flinched a little bit at Michael Moore’s speech because of the troops and because he was kind of “making a scene.” But I wouldn’t say that he shouldn’t have been himself or stated his own truth. This country needs to question things whether they like it or not. The bubble we all live in won’t last forever.

Europe Posted by Jocelyn Meyer on Mar 27, 2003 at 11:54 AM

What a brave person Michael Moore is.  He stood up for what he believed and I admire him for that.  In this time of war Americans have become the agressor and I hope more people stand up against this war of aggresion by the United States.  America has become the terrorist.  They advertise it with there shock and awe attack.  Yes I am shocked and I am in awe of the stupidity of Americans and our history.  We freed ourselves but in the meantime we enslaved the black race and practically wiped out the Red race.  What a bogus history we have.  And we call it democracy.

United States Posted by Adam on Mar 27, 2003 at 12:19 PM

Well, I would just like to say thank you to everyone who leaves such crude and profane statements that reveal how rediculously ignorant many Americans are.  The fact that many claim the protestors should be ashamed of themselves is almost ironic, in that protest was the very way in which this country was formed.  But go on, continue to live in your sheltered little lives where everything is peachy and killing other human beings is justified...as they say, ignorance is bliss.  Just don’t be suprised when the tables turn and we’re the ones sufferring from the actions we were so quick to deem patriotic.
One last note:  For every ignorant american that would state their hatred for anti-war protestors, I would ask that you pick up a book and read something so that your comments MAY be able to have at least SOME factual base.
    Thank you

Mr. Moore has eloquently phrased his opinion of Mr. Bush.  After reading some of the negative responses to his speech given @ A. A., it makes me wonder if those objecting are reacting emotionally and not taking the time to think through some of Mr. Moore’s points?  Maybe you should avoid disagreeing with the messenger Mr. Moore and question his line of rational thought!  What is it?

    The Baath Party

In 1963, members of the nationalist Baath Party assassinated Kassem. The Baathists were in power briefly before another army officer, Abdul Salam Arif, seized control. A bloodless coup, orchestrated largely by Saddam Hussein, succeeded in bringing the Baath Party to power permanently in 1968. A new constitution was written that made the party’s absolute control official. The first Baath president, Ahmed Hasan al-Bakr, continued many of Kassem’s socialist reforms, building a close relationship with the Soviet Union. In 1973, the Baath government completed a takeover of foreign oil companies working in Iraq. As world oil prices rose dramatically in the 1970s, Iraq’s profits were enormous. When Bakr resigned in 1979, Saddam succeeded him.

Hollywood didn’t lose the election. We all did when fathers and brothers are dying in a war that won’t be won and will continue for many, many years with terrorism and distrust. Don’t care? Call me unpatriotic?
Tell that to the thousands of innocent people who have already died in this war.
No, I’m patriotic, as we all are in this forum. More patriotic than the bullying, arrogant, imperialistic Republicans that were put in office. So you disagree with Nelson Mandella, Jimmy Carter, the Pope? So it’s not just Hollywood--the world is against this. Viva la France! I’m proud of you and Germany!

World Trade Center and Iraq HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER. You are stupid enough to believe Bush when he said Iraq was lying but Hans Blix said they were conforming to the UN demands. Now you’re dumb enough to believe Bush saying Iraq has ties to 9-11. Man, you are gullible.

You are right, Neil, safe in Boise, and not in Iraq, Iran, Ethopia or Pakistan. No one cares who I am.  I was responding to the invitation to comment on this story and you have attacked my right to have an opinion.  I do not make a lot of money. I am a school teacher and raised 4 children.  History is my hobby.  I do not ‘buy’ anyone else’s ideas - I think for myself. And I never let my children nor my students call anyone ‘stupid’. Hollywoodites who use their celebrity to lend weight to what is only their opinion, have an unfair advantage over those of us, about whom nobody knows or cares.  Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandella are fine humanitarians who quietly express their opinions and do not block traffic and nor call attention to themselves with camera-grabbing stunts.  You must have a chip on your shoulder - I did not call anyone unpatriotic. Why don’t you move to California, or better yet, France or Germany. You would fit better there with anti-American hate mongers, than in the plain ole mid-west USA.  If this anti-war campaign continues, you will succeed in turning this into another Viet Niam.  I grew up with those men and women. Oh - and - yes, two of my children served in Desert Storm 12 years ago - volunteers, just like our troops in Iraq today.

We all know that Bush is just the tip of the iceberg and that he is just there in office to carry out the will of the Corporate Plutarcracy, namely, world economic domination.  Iraq is just one stop on this abominable journey of conquest!  9/11 was an excuse

Again, many thanks.  I give you a standing ovation!!!!

Sweden Posted by Johan Estius on Mar 28, 2003 at 11:10 AM

I am amazed at the level of ignorance found in some of the previous postings.

Of course, Michael Moore has every right to express his opinion.  It is a rare privilege, and it has been paid for with the lives of American troops.  However, on a day when several of our troops were killed, taken prisoner, and executed, MM’s comments were disrespectful and in poor taste.

I would like to point out a few facts:

FACT:  There WAS a full recount of the Florida votes after President Bush took office.  He DID win the majority in that state.  It is a moot point anyway: in this country, we have something called the Electoral College which decides elections.

FACT:  Iraq only exports 5.6% of the TOTAL OIL used in the ENTIRE WORLD.  The United States only imports 20% of it’s oil from the ENTIRE Middle East.  People who think this war is about oil only need to look at how the Iraqi regime is fighting this war to determine what this war is really about.

FACT:  Saddam Hussein has murdered over 2 million of HIS OWN PEOPLE over the last 30 years.  He is the most evil world leader since Hitler and Stalin.  His sons are serial rapists.

FACT:  “Bowling for Columbine” is replete with lies and, to coin one of MM’s phrases, fiction.  If he is going to use the 1st Amendment in such a brazen fashion, he needs to recognize the ENTIRE Bill of Rights, including a citizen’s right to bear firearms, which has been upheld no less than 48 times by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The bottom line is this:  everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Some of us are for this war and some are against it.  That is fine.  Debate and difference of opinion are at the very core of what makes this nation great.  I personally support this war and I personally respect and admire President Bush.  I honestly think he cares more about the people of Iraq than he does about his own political future.  He may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but I do not doubt his sincerity.

I did not want this war to happen.  BUT, the mere absence of armed conflict does not necessarily mean that there is peace in the world.  Sometimes, peace with justice can only be attained through the use of military force.  It’s not clean, it’s not pretty, but that is just the way it is.

I just hope and pray, whether you are for or against this war, that we ALL fully support our young troops who are, as we speak, in harm’s way.  It is SO important for them to know that we are all behind them.

United States Posted by Tom on Mar 28, 2003 at 11:14 AM

Please - the boos only came from the side of the stage?  That is ridiculous.

I am so sick of this free speech BS.  Who is stopping the speech??  I didn’t see Ashcroft at the Oscars.  If people don’t like the speech - they have every right to boo it, or react to it.  They even have the right to claim it is not patriotic, if that is there opinion.

Liberals know this, they try to censor conservatives all the time, through boycotts, labels, etc.

United States Posted by Tom on Mar 28, 2003 at 11:15 AM

I saw on the Web Michael spoke to the press after the Oscars. He said the majority of Americans are pro-choice, pro-environment, united in opposing to the war in Iraq. He saved me from holding deep grudges against Americans. Because Michael is there, I feel that I can still trust people, and that I can have some hope in people of the U.S. Michael Moore is a great individual of conscience. He speaks his heart so sincerely. I admire him. It’s a big wonder some people cannot hear him. And I am sorry for those (small number of people, I believe) who are not capable of comprehending his message.
“What impacts any one member of the human family impacts us all,” a famous peace activist in Japan writes. Stop the war, now. Stop the violence, now. For those who are inflicting the horror, misery, and suffering upon others are creating karma, bad cause, for themselves. The consequences are more than one can imagine, and there is no way out.

“It is not a matter of money it is a matter of values...Christian morals and values, as opposed to the valueless instruction that his gov’t school peers receive.”

So it’s the old Christian thing, isn’t it?

“The dollar cost of ‘educating’ his gov’t school peers is 6000 dollars over 2000 dollars more than it cost to educate my son.”

If you’re so sick of subsidizing public education, then tell your accountant.  And hold off on the vouchers; they’re a form of public funding.

“Regarding health care (and regarding education) neither is a right, but rather both are responsibilites.”

For once I agree.  Once the final bill for Bush’s war is presented to the American people, they’re going to realize that their responsibility of healthcare and education to them and them alone.  Of course Bush and company will continue to enjoy their taxpayer-supported salaries, residences, and healthcare benefits.

In every new dawn of Dictatorship and Fascism, free speech and press censorship are usually the first casualties.

The right wingers know they cannot justify this war with any superior argument, so they vilify and attack personally anyone who speaks against it.

With the mainstream media completely cowed and subdued (albeit, not against their wish) the likes of MIchael Moore and his Holywood friends are all we’ve got to speak out loud the voice of reason.

This may well come as a shock to you, but everybody, Micheal Moore included, are allowed to voice their opinions without being shot.  And your comments prove only that you are stupid, stupid, little boys who think this whole war is like a remake of Band of Brothers miniseries.

Maybe you should pick up a book before you throw your comments at us.  The long and short of it is… YOU’RE WRONG.

Michael Moore was right in saying ìwe live in fictitious timesî. Bush is a puppet for the worldís big biasness. He is a man that cannot think for him self. He is a man that is not fit to be are president and is not intelligent enough to run the US of A. To all of you that are for the war I pity you. If you blame Saddam fully for the killing of people then we are in part to blame, we put Saddam in to power, we sold Saddam many of the weapons that he has. We need to wake form are dream and realize that the ëGrateí US of A is at its down fall like every grate empire we will fall and it scary to think that Bush is just the begging.

I ask any one and every one to Vote To Impeach this man that stole the office.

A crucial part of a democracy is an informed public. The media and government have a responsibility to report not only the “warm and fuzzy” heroic baby saving picture, but also the many sketchy developments of the Bush administration (i.e. the billion dollar contract to Haliburton, Cheney’s “former” company.) Before the war the administration and many ignorant conservatives predicted a “rousing victory” in a matter of days… and only since war has started does the same government state that it could be many months. Michael Moore reveals these gaps in coverage and makes up for his lack of mainstream airtime by making a scene at a massive venue.
You brainwashed conservatives boycotting everything and everyone who disagrees with you should spend your time gathering facts not sound bites.
Michael Moore is doing a service for every American whether you agree with him or not.

    Thanks Michael.

I live in a country led by an unelected dictator who bullies smaller countries, threatens the world with weapons of mass destruction, demands unqualified support for all of his actions, and orders sweeping arrests of dissenters in the name of suppressing terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism.

I’ve heard all of the arguments about, “Why are they going into Iraq but not North Korea?” I don’t care all that much, because the much more important question is, “Why are they going into Iraq but not America?” Why has nobody stepped forward to liberate America, punish its dictator for crimes against the word, and restore democracy?

The US government has already publicly announced that any Iraqi civilians who attempt to defend themselves from its invasion will not be treated as prisoners of war, but as terrorists. This violates the spirit and word of both American and international law in just about every way I can imagine.

In other words, the American armed forces are now under orders to commit war crimes against foreign civilians. This puts them in an impossible position, and the only way to protect these boys and girls is to get them home.

The US has taken on the UN and the entire world as an enemy. In time of war, giving aid and comfort to the enemy is treason.

Remaining silent or blindly supporting the administration gives the rest of the world ammunition for its anti-American sentiment, unites them against us, and gives them more ammunition to use against us in war crimes trials. At the same time, it makes it easier for terrorist organizations to recruit agents to use against the mostly-innocent people of the US and its allies.

If that’s not providing aid and comfort to enemies in time of war, what is?

The alternative is to speak out, as people ranging from Michael Moore to the Dixie Chicks to General “Stormin’” Norman Schwartzkopf have done--to help show the world that not all Americans stand behind Bush, to help stop him from committing illegal actions in our name. And if that helps preserve our own freedoms at the same time, so much the better!

    Jeremi and Andi,

I don’t agree with either of you in the slightest.  But I do applaud your articulate and mature postings.  They are in the true spirit of debate and opinion.  Please read my earlier posting, about ten or twelve postings earlier.  I welcome your comments.

I turned off news radio and TV since the war started because of overwhelmingly suffocating bias coverage in favor of the war.

In reading these comments and discourse here, I am very re-assured in knowing that at least 80% of us Americans still have our senses with us and are not fooled by this White House occupant.

Analisa of Wisconsin asked about post-war contracts. My dear, they already have them awarded. Three weeks ago it made minor news carried only by C-Span that Haliburton has won the contract to clean up Iraqi oil fields. Haliburton, Dick Cheney’s company.

It is amazing that we Americans can accept and defend this in-your-face hipocrisy and blatant corruption.

For those of you that love America, whether or not your are in support of the war or our government, and want to see our country be as best as we can be, I applaud you.

For those of you who are just ranting about America with no basis to your argument, why don’t you just go live somewhere else?  There are over 200 countries in this world.  Be my guest.

I was born here, my two toddler sons were born here (and I feel better about their future now than I did 2 weeks ago), and I love our country, even with all of it’s perceived ills.

I won’t tolerate my homeland being insulted.  I love it here.  We are living the best existence in the history of recorded civilization.  If you don’t like it here, move.  It is as simple as that.

    Hi Michael,
I enjoyed your picture, Bowling for Columbine, and was thrilled you won the Oscar.  As far as your speech, it was great.
As a Floridian, who voted for Gore, I was shocked how this state was able to pull off such a phony, fixed election. After doing some research, Miami, Dade County is know for its crooks, etc. It’s not known for the “Bananna Republic” for no reason. However, the stupid white men here in Florida voted Jeb Bush in again, what a joke.
Keep up your great work and I intend to buy your book.

    Take care,

    To Tom, Denver, CO.

I have read you full comments. Assuming you are 100% accurate, the facts as you have stated have not proven how the war benefits America, especially in comparison with what we stand to lose.

The facts as you have stated does not show how Iraq or Saddam are a threat to America serious enough to kill innocent Iraqis and our young soldiers.

The best case you have made is that Saddam has murdered 2 million of his own people.

There are scores of murderous dictators around the world, is America going to topple them all and invade these countries regardless of world opinion?

It’s great that you respect and admire George Bush, but part of your responsibility to your leader is to offer constructive criticism, rather than follow without any reservations.

Criticising your leaders when they are obviously wrong actually makes them stronger and better leaders.

United States Posted by Merlin Gentry on Mar 28, 2003 at 12:27 PM

    Yeah, Karin!!!

I couldn’t agree more.  I have noticed a direct correlation in many of these postings between the use of foul langauge and a distinct inability to spell or use proper grammar.

Let’s all try to put our best foot forward, shall we?

United States Posted by Tom on Mar 28, 2003 at 12:29 PM

One of Bush’s main objectives is to “liberate” the people of Iraq. Liberate them from what? Life? He’s bombing the shit out of civilians. He hasn’t gotten Saddam yet because he is well protected unlike the average Iraqi citizen. Eveyone is making a big deal out of Saddam killing his own people and it IS a big deal. What difference does it make if he kills them or Bush kills them?

United States Posted by J Aseff on Mar 28, 2003 at 12:33 PM

I am glad Michael said what he said I wish he could have said more.  This war is immoral and unjust. I feel guilty everyday that I go to work because
my tax dollars are killing people.  It’s just is not right unless you have absolutely NO conscience. How dare the administration put us through this
terrorism.  The Bush Cartel has lied its way into a war that America would have opposed had it known the true facts.  Its all
    about OIL BLOOD FOR OIL.
The Bush administration conducts a secret contracting process, including a large no-bid contract for Kellogg, Brown, and Root subsidiary of Halliburton.  If your NOT totally stupid, you’ll be able to connect the dots.  I wish more people, LIKE IN CONGRESS, had the balls that Micheal Moore has maybe we would’nt be in this terrible situation. Cut military spending in half and lets put it towards FUEL CELL technology.  Reduce the dependence on oil and Saddam will vanish. I GUESS THATS JUST TO SIMPLE.

United States Posted by Linda on Mar 28, 2003 at 12:36 PM

    Tom ----

Fact #1 there were a number of full recount of the Florida votes Bush did win some but the fight was not the recounting of the votes but if the votes them selfís were tampered with.

    Fact #2 No comment

Fact #3 And how many people has the US of A murdered over the last 30 years. Look a Guatemala were the SIA supplied weapons, training, and other support for the military to over throw the government. Then after over throwing the government the SIA help Guatemalaís military with kill thousands of people. I have been to Guatemala and see some of the stuff that they have done, I have talked with the people there. One lady who was at one time a US citizen was mired to a Guatemalan, one day a Death Squad lead by the CIA cam to there home and shot her husband because they thought that he MITE be hiding grille rebels. We have done this all over the world for more then 30 years. Guatemala is just one of many example of how we have kill thousands in the one country and millions in the world.

Fact #4 I agree that we have the right to bear arms.

I see that you are a parity intelligent person but if you think that war (killing) is the answer then Iím sorry you are wrong.

ìWay do we kill people that kill people to show that killing people is wrong.î

It’s good to see there are people in the States who have the guts to go against big money, big oil, the big shit that’s been going on for over two years now. I was afraid I’d get an odd picture about the people of the United States. Keep up the good work, Michael!

Germany Posted by Mike on Mar 28, 2003 at 12:43 PM

    Merlin,

I appreciate your thought-provoking comments.  I would not say that I “blindly” follow President Bush.  I disagree with him on a number of smaller issues.  As far as criticizing our leaders to make them stronger - I spent most of 1993-2001 in sharp criticism of the amoral dilletante who held office during that time.

You are right that there are scores of murderous dictators in this world.  Should we topple them all?  I don’t know.  But what I do believe (and this is just my opinion), that America is one of the few countries that can fight for people who can’t fight for themselves.  Which is better:  the peace of justice or the peace of isolationism?

As far as Iraq, the best I can tell is that some Iraqis are pro-Saddam and some Iraqis are pro-U.S.  A couple months ago, Newsweek conducted a secret poll of Iraqi people, as best they could under the circumstances, that revealed most Iraqis favored a U.S. led invasion and a replacement of government.  Polls are what they are, but I believe it nonetheless.

And J Aseff, I can GUARANTEE that our military does not intentionally target civilians.  Have we accidentally hit some civilians - yes, unfortunately.  But we have saved, treated, and liberated tens of thousands more.  Be careful of the information you receive from dictatorships in times of war.  The day after the Normandy Invasion, the German newspapers proclaimed that the Allies had been beaten back into the sea.  We all know how that one turned out.

“stupid white men..."that infortunatelly is not on sale on our libraries.Anyway America should be proud of him cause he is the one-with many others-who are trying to restaure the authentic image of USA and in that specific way he is making a great job in giving us,specially arab nations,
reasons to keep the faith in the real America’s values and in smashing hard the Huntington theory of clash of civilisations and his zealous warmongers(Bush and his gang of oilkillers)

Anti-war does not equal Anti-troops (after all we are trying to get them OUT of harm’s way, right?)

I didn’t vote for the man that is sending our young Americans to die for oil in Iraq and according to the statistics neither did a lot of other people. Someone needs to stand up to these bullies.
