As the article stated several times, these are DEFENSIVE programs. You cant make vaccines and antitoxins without having the agent to work with. Many other counties have huge stockpiles of bioweapons and we are fools if we dont try to protect ourselves. These defensive programs have been chronically underfunded and are nothing in comparison to say, Russias programs. This is leftist scare tactics and back biting trying to drum up support for a pacifist position. INFORMED INTELLIGENT people will see this and ignore it.

Dear Mr. J Bowman, your point is well taken. However, one should clean up his/her own home first before forcing others to do so. Especially if former helped the latter in recent history to stockpile such “undesireable” items.
By the way, Israel has a terribly bigger amuont of WMDs and refuses to be inspected, let alone disarm. There should be an even implementation of such laws across the board.
Accept it or not, ignorants such as yourself have helped the wicked tyrants like TE Lawrence, Winston Churchill, Henry Kissinger, Bush & Blair divide the world along religious lines for their personal gains.

Im not sure why people are asking for verification of the scientists calling for weapons inspections and facilities doing research. They are clearly poor readers… the article expressly states “Jonathan King, an MIT biologist” and “Harvard biologist Matthew Meselson.” Do they not realize that biologists are, indeed, scientists… and as for the facilities doing the research… again, the article expressly points to “the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland; the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground in Utah; the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York; and the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.” Hmmm…. readers, please make sure you make sense before posting.

Mr Bowman, I found your acceptance of the statement that these biological programs were solely for the production of anti-toxins rather sweet, in a naive sort of way. Of course, you, and they, may be perfectly correct and they may only be producing a small amount for research of anti-toxins, but if that is the case, why did the US veto the treaty that would have allowed for regular inspections to ensure such compliance? It smacks as very similar to the US’s refusal to be bound under the International Court. Basically, it’s alright to try war criminals or carry out inspections in other countries, as long as it’s not the USA. It is this sort of arrogance that recently caused a poll in the European version of Time Magazine to find that 85% of readers thought the USA was the greatest threat to world peace. (North Korea got 7% and Iraq 8%!).
Informed intelligent people don’t blindly accept unsubstanitated statements of “these are just for defensive purposes”. Informed intelligent people query, question and probe to ensure the truth, whatever it is, is revealed to the satisfaction of all.

They complain the loudest, those with the most to hide.
People like those who are controlling Bush are the ones who would drug and kill their own (MKUltra), test nuclear devices over their property, livestock and livelihood, and kill 5 million Vietnamese to bring them freedom. They supply both sides of a war (Iraq with bio and chems, and Tow missiles in Irangate) to hold back governments in which they were complicit in bringing about (CIA involvement in the Shah’s ascension and 17 years of torture, and the CIAs involvement in bringing about Saddam and his precursor strain.
Their time has passed, yet since they cannot panic gracefully, their death rattle affects us all.

The article is right on target. while the United States points out the chemical weapons programs of the so called “rogue” states people of this country forget that the U.S. also has stockpiles of chemical, nuclear, and probably biological weapons. Before we send U.N. weapons inspectors to Iraq perhaps the inspectors should also get a look around our weapons facilities.

I don’t think Bozo in the White house cares about the Weapons of Mass Destruction. He has wanted to attack Iraq and Saadam since his father blew it the first time around.
He is the WORST thing that has happend to the United States, and the Cabinet Member in Germany was correct when she compared him to Hitler.

Percy, while skepticism of our so-called president is very healthy, your attitude is not, even if it was in jest. It implies that Saddam is more innocent than Bush somehow, and that’s a scary misconception. Think before you speak. Saying the attacks were “justified” is not only shortsighted and desperate, that kind of thinking would give Bush an equal justification for attacking. And I think that is also hypocrisy.

Personally, I’m against going to war with Iraq but I think some people fail too see why Bush wants to disarm Iraq. It’s not that Iraq is a regime that has aquired, and is aquiring weapons of mass destruction, it’s that they have full intention of using it. They have used them against Iran and the Kurds. I believe that the chemicals and biological agents are in our country for a good reason, but I also think that we should get rid of them because they could potentially get in the wrong hands.
Posted by Thijs de Vries on Feb 6, 2003 at 1:51 PM
this stuffs crazy, were willing to go to war with a country if they dont let any one see what they are hiding, yet we can get away with denying entrance into our own facilities

“It’s not that Iraq is a regime that has aquired, and is aquiring weapons of mass destruction, it’s that they have full intention of using it. They have used them against Iran and the Kurds. ” So said Thijs De Vries.
If this really was the motivation (and a good one it is) why did the USA sell Iraq the weaponry to use against the Kurds during the attempted genocide of the 80’s? Why did the USA and the UK stand idly by and still count Saddam as a valuable ally when he was systematically using chemical weapons against whole villages of kurds? In 1988, UK Minister David Mellor was actually in Baghdad meeting with saddam when Saddam wiped out 5000 Kurds in the village of Halbja - the worst act of genocide using poison gas ever documented. The UK’s response? Threats of military intervention? Sanctions? UN Resolutions? No. They expressed their ‘shock’ publically, but within a month negotiations had begun to INCREASE trade of machine tools with a dual use (that is, they can be used for weaponry - contrary to a ban of arms sales to Iraq).
So, sure, they can use this as a motivation now, but it does not strike me as the true agenda, seeing as it was never seen before as any kind of reason to discipline Iraq. What did cause the change in relations and a desire to discipline Saddam? The invasion of Kuwait - oil. Which is why so many of us maintain that this is still the main agenda despite every other smokescreen that is presented to us - no matter how noble.

As a young person of Britain, I feel very strongly about being led by the collar into a war about nothing more than greed. this article just points out one of the many hypocricies of the US. We are going to war with Iraq because he killed his own people, yet we say nothing about how many we have killed through sanctions and bombs over bagdad. God, my hatred of Bush the fagot grows with each passing day.
Posted by IMRAN on Feb 9, 2003 at 10:18 PM
The stupid thing about this is that none of these so called “inspectors” seem to have any background in chemical weapons. Even if someone did let them in (and that ain’t gonna happen) they wouldn’t have the slightest clue what they are looking for. Wouldn’t it make more sense to bring someone along who knew what they were doing?
Posted by John Ellis on Feb 9, 2003 at 11:20 PM
It is truly sad to see that so many of the individuals that have read this article are terribly uneducated on this matter, and lack the ability to reply intelligently. Many are blaming Bush and the entire USA as the instigator in what may be another war. Are they seriously forgetting that Saddam is the one that steals the humanitarian aid the US has tried to provide to the Iraqi people, and that the civilians there are in favor of US intervention? Or doesn’t it bother them that Saddam will not account for all of his weapons of mass destruction, both chemical and biological, that he stockpiled during the 1980’s and 1990’s. And even though he claims not to have them, he continues to threaten the US with the harm they can cause us if we invade. Or perhaps they really are more concerned with the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases having availability to these weapons and toxins to try and develop a strain to combat anthrax for undeserving morons like them. But they claim they know how to solve it. Let’s send in more weapons inspectors. Because come on, Saddam won’t comply with 50 inspectors, but he will with 80. Please. Don’t waste my time with such unintelligible comments anymore.

I would like to hear a follow up on the nuns! Seems like they did a brave thing, but did it help anything? How did they get in the building? Someone should contact the axis of justice to have those nuns released!!!!
As far as the bio’s, you have to be naive to believe that we don’t have them. I believe that at This point they are only for research, but it is definitely a good idea to have Inspectors. I do not believe though, that we Should inspect Iraq. I don’t want War, but Saddam is the type of guy that uses mustard gas on his own people, he uses it on women and small children-that is a Fact! He should be illiminated from power absolutely. Before anyone points the finger we should all remember that at least in the U.S. we have some form of freedom and control over our lives, the Iraqi’s do not. Even if the U.S. were making bio weapons for offensive purposes, we have the power to change that.
Do you honestly think that anyone can change Saddam’s mind or inforce laws upon him? No. Nixon WAS impeached, Saddam cannot be! He answers to no one but himself. I have seen some classified pictures of Iraq a couple of years back and guess what ? We knew where the missiles were….He was hiding them in elementary schools so that when we found them(radar) we could not bomb him!
Posted by collapsingstar7 on Feb 10, 2003 at 1:06 PM
Those of you who honestly believe that USA wants to go in because of humanitarian concerns really needs to do their homework. The 500,000 people who have died as a direct result of US led sanctions and bombing since 1991 may have a bone to pick with that argument. Sure, Saddam ain’t no poster boy, but he is a dictator who operated with the FULL SUPPORT of the UK and USA until he threatened oil supplies by invading Kuwait in 1990. Any reading on the subject also reveals that once Saddam is removed, he won’t necessarily be replaced by a democratic government. The US has a new dictator earmarked to take over - one who was also responsible crimes against his people in the 1980’s, but who will be more obedient to the US. let the truth be knowen about the united states. let every one know what they have done and what they have for thier dooms day wepons. teach the world the truth that japan was trying to surrender for months before they dropped the bombs on them. teach the world about all the dictatores that they support. teach the world the elections of other countrys that they have interfeared in. teach the world that saddam tryed to pull out of Kuwait two or three times. the only condition, it would be a few days after the dead line that he was given so he would appear as if he didnt backdown. teach the world that united states doesnt care if they live or die as long as they can get the oil they so desperatly want. teach the world that todays empires are tomorows ashes. and teach the world the the empire is starting to crumble. the crumbling started when an illiterate, drunken, crack head rigged the election and became president. teach the world the states track record for human rights. teach the world every terrorist organization that they funded. (well i guess its good terrorism when its against thier enemies). but they will teach the world that if you butcher a few million people in a war for oil that something will happen to return the favor to them. thats what 9/11 was and what do you think the next one will be like

In 1957 I worked for the Naval Biological Laboratory in Oakland, California. At that time Doctors from the University of California at Berkeley and Doctors from the Navy were working together to create cross species diseases from chickens. They also worked on Botulism toxin, and one day they had an accident in the lab (someone dropped a test tube with botulism toxin) and the whole area was shut off to keep us all from being killed.

The US is the sole country to have drop nuclear weapons onto civil population; it made secret radioactive test on its own citizens; has tested non-finished vaccines and other prophilactic treatments on its own military men with the consequences we all know. As a Mexican living just some miles away from where it all happened (including gossip that AIDS and Ebola viruses came out from US labs), I think i’d be way safer living in Kuwait or Iran than across the US border, far away from such dangerous experiments and crazy people (Bush Sr. & Jr., Rice, Chenney, Rumsfeld, et. al.) who think that anything that happens beyond their doorsteps doesn’t affect them or their children.
It all reminds me a joke: A man comes and knocks at the White House main door: The guard opens, and the man says plainly: “I want to become president”. The guard looks at him with suspicion and asks angrily: “Are you nuts?”, and the man replies a little confused: “Is it a pre-requisite?”

The thing that blows my mind is this…there is this division amongst us, anti-war pacifist versus war mongering politico. The FACT is that nobody has the foggiest idea what they are supporting. How can you people make all of these broad generalizations and accusations and assumptions when you have no idea what you are talking about. The government is only releasing what they want you to hear, and the rest is made-up and speculated and outright fabricated. NONE OF US KNOWS THE TRUTH! The war that is being propagated is the dissention amongst the PEOPLE. Fear and hate fuel what we know as the war machine. Insisting that I know the truth and you are just a pussy peace-nik, or power-hungry young republican, or whatever, just fuels the machine. I only support one action, and that is the removal of all in power, and the neutering of all those who seek it.

Jack, ever read the story about how the marines killed an 18 year old boy on his birthday with high tech military weopons in Texas because they thought he was a drug runner? He wasn’t. Not even close. He was a goat herder. His name was Ezequiel Hernandez. You can look him up on the web. That’s one small example. Based on your logic I would say we have forfeited our “God given right” to be a super power a long time ago.

You answer falls under so many fallacies such as the the : Ad Hominem, Straw Dog, Circular Reasoning, Poisoning the Well, and quite a few others, not to mention your skewing the argument. If you are going to take one instance and make an erroneous conclusion based upon someone’s bias, might I suggest a career in politics, the media, or polling? The states are the only country dumb enough to use the atomic bomb in an attack and with a “president” that is so hell bent on war the world can not be to safe. so i say this. “Get the inspectors in before that moron George Bush kills us all!” But i know that wont happen because America will pay thier way out with blood.

I agree with you B. Smith.
I believe that the chemicals and biological agents are in our country for a good reason, but I also think that we should get rid of them because they could potentially get in the wrong hands.
this stuffs crazy, were willing to go to war with a country if they dont let any one see what they are hiding, yet we can get away with denying entrance into our own facilities
I thank the article for opening my eyes a bit more to the actions of america involving chemical and biological weapons and am pleased to see top scientists calling for weapons inspections, although would like to hear of more big names getting involved, this seems like merely a rumble below.
Hi.
A great site. Bush not co-operative is he? About time the shoe is put on the other foot!
(“Bush foot & mouth!” mmm…)
Koti HAIG
this article just points out one of the many hypocricies of the US. We are going to war with Iraq because he killed his own people, yet we say nothing about how many we have killed through sanctions and bombs over bagdad. God, my hatred of Bush the fagot grows with each passing day.
The U.S. should let inspectors in because if our country is so innocent, then let it be proven by the U.N. inspectors.
(well i guess its good terrorism when its against thier enemies). but they will teach the world that if you butcher a few million people in a war for oil that something will happen to return the favor to them. thats what 9/11 was and what do you think the next one will be like
wake up people. how many acts of outright hypocracy will it take before the brainwashed masses of the united states realize that they are cows being lead to the slaughter on a carpet of gold? bush and his cronies are bent on world domination; the only real difference between his campaign and hitler’s is that he’s already conquered this hemisphere without an overt invasion. the war on terror is a sham masterminded by the cia, right down to the september 11th attacks, and anyone who believes otherwise is a fucking fool. its time to bring an end to this march towards world domination.
I totally agree with spliffjack harper we need to realize what our goevrment is doing and take a stand against it, isnt that what are forfathers would have wanted? I think george washington may have been the most honset president we have had and even he wasnt totally truthful. It’s all a sham and its our duties as americans, no as people to stop it vist www.axisofjustice.com for more info on how.
In 1957 I worked for the Naval Biological Laboratory in Oakland, California. At that time Doctors from the University of California at Berkeley and Doctors from the Navy were working together to create cross species diseases from chickens. They also worked on Botulism toxin, and one day they had an accident in the lab (someone dropped a test tube with botulism toxin) and the whole area was shut off to keep us all from being killed.
give it to bill o’reilly at fox news and try and see him try to wriggle out of this.propaganda merchants for bush and his evil henchmen.
Check out the following site I’ve put together. I’ve tried to compile as musch informatin regarding these events as possible, including the stuff that isn’t being given the publicity it deserves.

Thanks.
Hello! We did not lose a war that requires us to allow inspections of our weapons.
One flaw among many in that so called story is: A person has the God given libery to have a tank in his back yard if he wants one, but if he uses it on innocents, then he forfeits that right. Saddam Husayn has used his poisons on people, we have not. What about that don’t you understand?

One point missed in readers responses:
1. The nuns were trespassing.
2. The nuns criminally damaged taxpayers property.
3. We live in a REPRESENTATIVE
DEMOCRACY.
If you don’t like something…CHANGE the LAW.
Sidenote, Can ANYONE explain how this war is an ‘oil war’ ?
If the US didn’t buy Iraq’s oil, they’d really be starving.
Cookie… You say that you are attempting logic, but in fact your answer is fallacious. Thanks for the sophistry—-but we’re all stocked up.
“Saddam Husayn has used his poisons on people, we have not. “
Obviously the victims of a little something called Project Tailwind know something you don’t, Jack.
MY idea is this. Get g.bush and rumsy and all his mates and conscript them. Have them start at the bottom as GRUNTZ and let them go through bootcamp and train as the others. mi8nd you that might make them even more deadly and brutal. For president I reckon Neil Young for a start. That would sort out the war problem. then for sidekicks get people like Dylan—- Phoebe Snow—- keith Richards.—- and the neviell-brothers dudes like that man. and let them have at least a look at it. cos at the moment you guyz are in big big trouble. But dont ever forget that allwayz pray first allwayz. any way by for now your KIWI freind from down under N.Z. BLESS YA ALL FOLKS. REMEMBER GOD is trying to love america. but your livin under the law and not GRACE is makeing it a wee bit tough for him.[ GRACE][ Gods Riches. At Christ Expence] I think that is a awsome statement dont you think???.
