It is a collection of poetry, essays, letters, e-mails, plays, and journal entries which offer views not covered by media types. There was no attempt by anyone to censor the material.

Lighten up. Broaden your thinking a bit. Read differing opinions and please try to be a little objective. The book I mentioned, “Operation Homecoming” would be a good start, since it literally covers the full range on the war.
Not everything bad is due to conspiracies. Honest, well meaning people can do dumb things. While there is no shortage in the world of sleazy ones simple-minded ones like Georgie can cause a lot of trouble while truly believing they are right. (Often these are the most dangerous.)
Of course there have been opportunists involved in the war — all wars bring out the best and the worst in people. During the Revolution Washington was pissed off at people making a bundle on boots and saddles, food and other supplies.
Last week I read about a Marine (Cpl Dunham) from New York who covered a grenade with his helmet and dropped on it to save his buddies. The NY Times diidn’t even mention it. How sick is that.
There have been conspiracies alleged for WW2, Kennedy’s assassination, and others — denials of the holocaust, the moon landing, — all kinds of wild ideas, but just plain human failures are enough to account for anything.
There are various motives for getting ourselves into the Iraq mess, but in my opinion, no excuses for letting it get this bad.
Meanwhile, if you have any spare cash to sock away for retirement, I’d recommend a Roth IRA with investments in energy related closed end funds (and reinvest the dividends). The Vanguard fund (VAW) is closed to new investors, but it has earned 14% per year for twenty years. That means the initial amount has doubled each 5 years.
Another which is a good long term bet is OIH which is mostly into refining and related companies. The lack of refining capacity is the bottleneck for the next several years.

Give me a skeptic...”Well, I am definitely a skeptic on most things, just not into the conspiracy mode. Little ones for a short term I can buy, but not the big, long term stuff. Even (or maybe especially) the crookedest and best planned schemers soon start to screw each other. Look at the gang wars of the 20 and 30s or the drug gangs today. The truth will eventually prevail, so let’s wait and see.
I agree more problems are caused and harder to combat by the “well-meaning” who impose their solutions on us. Religious, political, whatever.
There is no doubt that the Iraq war deteriorated into another Viet Nam. I expect the new (retreads) guys Gates and Baker will soon have us pull out and leave the Iraqis to be slaughtered. IMO the worst of all solutions to Saddam’s reign. Gates has been there — done that under Bush 41.
As for Blondie, I think he is hilarious — he’s got both of us down as a right-wing conspiracy of two. He should write for Jay Leno.

I think I’ve said this before, but our disagreements are not all that great. I think it’s more a case of degree than basic disagreement.
You have named a bunch of what I can consider conspiracies too, but all I’m saying is not everything which is being labeled as such today necessarily IS one.
Even slavery was not a universal conspiracy when the revolution was in process or the Constitution was being written. The expediency of politics extended it even when a majority of individuals thought it was outrageous. (Not that that did much good for the people being held as slaves.)I think we agree pretty much on the current economic situation and I would say at least a part of the cause is due to the conspiring of big business and politicians. However, many of the people who back our economic policies are not conspirators — they genuinely believe the textbook theories still apply.
With regard to the war — I haven’t seen much criticism of our entry into Afghanistan — mostly just Iraq. Stupidity has run rampant in the post combat handling mainly due to (IMO) the arrogance of Rumsfeld and the misplaced loyalty to him from Bush. Bush’s fundamentalist Christian belief that God has chosen him to be the savior of the Middle East by establishing democracy in Iraq is a pipe dream.
I do not believe there is a national conspiracy to rule the world.
I do believe there is a genuine threat to the western world from radical Muslims. Is this a conspiracy then? Does it matter what we call it?
I do believe oil is a major motive behind our going there, but there were several others. We should free ourselves from oil dependency.
The Iraq issue has become so polarized (largely pro or anti Bush) that any good news or valid data supporting the “threat of Saddam” is being ignored.
Have you ever talked with our troops who have come back? Read their personal accounts?
I believe now that we are there, to leave too soon will be a disaster for the Iraqi people and the US.Baker is the guy responsible for the murder by Saddam of thousands of Kurds after 1991 and is likely to recommend an exit which will have the same result.
I think we can agree at least that that would be terrible. We did break it and do own the problem.

ever recognized Kuwait as a separate nation, which indeed it is not,
one large incestous ruling family and 80% of the population prior to
1991 were non-Kuwaitis.
Actually we have killed thousands of innocent civilians in Afghanistan,
many more than died at the WTC. Just because you haven’t run across
it in your usual rightwing reading sources doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
We created Al Queda by our massive aid to the Islamic fundies fighting
the USSR invasion. I was opposed to that invasion but also concerned
about the criminal character of the Afghan Contras which came home on 9-11. We created Al Queda in Iraq by overthrowing Saddam.
Time to get out of Iraq, Afghanistan and cut off Israel entirely.

The overall thrust of the articles on this site…
• Negative (I know nearly all media reporting is of bad news, but these are overwhelmingly editorializing with an anti-bias.)
• Blame is a central theme. Who to blame is variable — Bush, the U.S., society in general, Christianity, government, whites, the rich… seldom the individual “victim”.
• Going hand in hand with the above is — generalization, insinuation and guilt by association.
-------------------You are obviously an intelligent, thoughtful individual, but certain issues touch you in such a strongly emotional way that you seem to ignore any possible alternative motives, intentions and options.
I am somewhat familiar with many of your examples — Trilateralism, etc., but a lot of these are just opinions or in some cases book topics which are unproven but are moneymakers from a targeted audience.
Not everything bad is racially inspired. Not all bad policies are part of a master plot. Smedley aside — not all wars are profit oriented.
EachAll of the above may have elements of those issues, but life is far more complex and responsibility more diverse than In These Times would have us believe. Remember that unlike you and I they are getting paid to sell their stories here.
If this kind of stuff were my sole reading material I’d be a basket case.
Generalization (racial, economic, geographic, religious) of any kind is detrimental to our quality of life.

Agree on the marginalization technique. Certainly that is how Hitler came to power as opposed to the way Stalin and the Japanese Imperialists did it leading up to WW2.
Even after he was in control the rounding up of “undesirable” segments of the population allowed Hitler to do it with a general feeling that what was happening was good for the country. The majority thought it would only affect them in a positive way — criminals, homosexuals locked up — later just the Jews — finally everyone who opposed or even spoke against the state.
I see a parallel here today with the globalization process — cheaper consumer goods, “only the low-end jobs will be lost”, illegal immigrants “do the jobs Americans don’t want.? The already retired liked the idea, the white collars thought it would not get them, economists love neat theories like comparative advantage and free markets.
Where we disagree is on what constitutes fact and what is rumor, distortion (spin) or an anomaly.
I have heard too many “sure” scenarios over a long time to think most things reported daily are more than group noise.
In the early 1950s I was concerned by reports in national news magazines like TIME and NewsWeek about the “Population Explosion.” Before 2000 we were supposed to be so overcrowded we’d be shoulder to shoulder.
The Cold War had us seeing communist conspiracies everywhere. (Even Eisenhower was thought to be one by some extremists.) One prediction was that we would join with the Soviets against China for WW3.
Now it is global warming, U.S. empirialism, and possible extinction of elephants — Hey, we already saved Soviet Jews, whales and snail darters.
OK, so there was/is some truth to each of these issues, but globalization is the only one with which I have a personal experience that convinces me it is genuine. Many others disagree with me on it.

I did make entirely accurate comments about a not so small percentage of African Americans of the lumpen persuasion, I mean not so much economic here as a certain mentality. Living next Ito Berkeley I’ve met way too many white leftist apologists for African American crime. Period. Now on a couple of occasions I took the bait but if you look at the totality of our exchanges you will see that you have much more dismissive and just plain nasty than I have been. Where I supervise many people at work the black employees have been the best. Very fortunate in that respect. It’s when I leave here to go out in the streets that another world occurs.
