Diveristy is a good thing, and it is a good thing to hear the view points of different people with different backgrounds, but is it fair to not allow one person with better grade not into an institution in favor of someone else on the basis of race? Simply because something is legally acceptable doesn’t mean that you should do it, or that it makes sense. How can we think we as a society say that you should get a present advantage because of your race or gender. Why not on the basis of religion. I have had some of my best experiences because of my interactions with people who have different faiths. Why not allow diversity in the name of faith?
Ultimately we have to ask ourselves one question: what should be the basis for admission, or for recieving a job? It should not be influenced by race, gender, religion, or any other matter but the quality of the person’s work. The only way to do this would be to have admissions blind to all of these factors, which in today’s world is fairly easy to accomplish, just omit that information from applications and have it supplied later. Sure names and such will be attached to applications, but that information should fade away through a screening process.
Of corse the issue becomes much less definable when an interview is required. Here there is a certain amount of good faith required, but schools and employers should not be forced to meet quotas which may compromise their ultimate work ability.
We should not allow people to be discriminated against because it is only 1.5% to 2% of a chance different. That also corresponds into an actual number of people, which will probable be more than 1.5 to 2 people.

Blacks with all the benefits of professional parents, private schools, and a middle class upbringing are still considered to be “disadvantaged”. On what basis? We see blacks in all areas of life, now, succeeding and being respected. Is this because they could hang a diploma on their walls from a school which they were not qualified to attend, or because they worked hard and had brains?
I grew up with many blacks (not African-Americans - they had never seen Africa), and they were just like the rest of us. Some were brilliant and went on to be doctors and other professionals. Some were not brilliant, and went on to do the things they were good at, whatever they might be. Same with the whites.
Truly disadvantaged children should get a leg up - I agree wholeheartedly with that idea. Someone who has worked hard in a crummy school should have every opportunity to be accepted to a university and tutored until he can come up to speed. But to assume that skin color is the only thing necessary to be counted does not heal the division between the races but only antagonizes.

narrow sense of equal justice before the law should it apply. The
battle against Jim Crow was justified because the southern states
imposed mandatory legal segregation after Reconstruction and quite
disgracefully the US Supreme Court upheld it. Even if one accepts the
authority of the government to outlaw discrimination in public accomodations, employment and housing in the private sector, that
hardly justifies the affirmative discrimination known as affirmative action.
In my case my ancestors came from Ireland before the Civil War and
fought on both sides of that war in West Virginia, none was ever a slaveholder. To say that I should agree to pay the price for someone else’s sins is itself racist. And if you want to use the collective guilt concept that can be turned around on blacks for demands that they
pay for the cost of their crime, welfare and social pathology for the last
century. Bills will be coming instead of reparation checks.
One of the best African books is by the leftist Nigerian author Chinweuzi,
The West and The Rest of Us.
My wife has long thought that there should be equal funding for schools
so we are in agreement here. The funding can go in one common pot
so all the schools in a city can get equal funding, not just the affluent ones. Thanks for the Asante books recommendation, I’ll check it out.

San Francisco has very few blacks but the real estate is ought of sight. So we bought over here in the East Bay and the house has appreciated five times over what we paid for it. We have a low mortgage and pay 3K a year in property taxes but it would be 6 or 10K a year in the suburbs and we are city people. Otherwise we would have had to move to some far out
redneck place like Antioch or Concord and we have an aversion to
white trash, whiggers.
The problem has that there so many black criminals remaining at large
in Oakland, Berekeley and Richmond. Longrange this won’t be true
as these communities are thankfully gentrifying rapidly. Many former
Oaklanders have sold out and moved back to the south or the central
valley or places like Antioch, which are now experiencing major crime
booms. It’s a shame that decent folk like ourselves have to be victimized
by the Mo Fo lumpen criminal class. I used to oppose capital punishment, now I agree with George Wallace that we need round the
clock gas chambers and electric chairs plus public hangings to deter
these punks. Better they die than us. Lethal injection is something you
give to your dying cat, these hoods deserve to suffer. We need to get

When I first started taking part in these forums and discussions, here and at a several other sites a few years ago, I was more than a little shocked at the disrespect some people showed for one another for simply disagreeing with one another.
So I don’t put up with disrespect from anyone, whether I agree with their opinions or not. Most of the regulars here know my feelings on the matter and I have repeated myself many times. Most of the time it has a good effect but I have abandoned a couple of forums that are beyond redemption. If they want to trade insults and one-liners and the site owners don’t mind that’s their privilege, but I believe our hosts here at In These Times are above that and their admonishment to Please be respectful in your comments is not something I care to disregard
The methods I use vary, stick ... carrot or carrot ... stick. Repeat as necessary.
As I mentioned, it works most of the time. Those people who’s sole purpose is getting their kicks out of disrupting a discussion and being rude for the sake of being rude eventually leave in shame. Those who have a genuine desire for meaningful discussion eventually learn to show respect for others and receive it in return.
I have drifted away from In These Times for several months but have come back simply because I like it here. I have always admired Kurt Vonnegut and found this site by way of his association with ITT. I appreciate what our ITT hosts have done in providing the forum for these discussions and do not care to see it ruined by people who can’t seem to be respectful as our hosts have requested.

Mike, I don’t like terms like right and left very much. I think they serve to divide us when we need to be united and trying to find things we have in common rather than differences.
However, back a couple years ago Luminous Beauty found the Political Compass and several of the regulars here took the test. The reactions were something to see. A couple people who envisioned themselves as hardcore right wingers found themselves in the center and even, horror of horrors, leaning to the left. Some people were infuriated by some of the questions and summarily dismissed the results but shared them nonetheless.
I would encourage you to take the test and share the results. The questionnaire has some difficult questions, no fence to sit on. Polarizing but effective. Avoid knee jerk reactions unless knee jerk reactions are the reactions you actually have. I am usually skeptical / disdainful of questionnaires but this one, for me, was thoughtful and accurate. At least I approved of where it brought me: I am sitting next to Ghandi.
Here are the results of some of the people you know here today. Back in the day we all shared them with one another, about a dozen of us, and since the results are matters of public record, which I saved to the hard drive, I don’t mind sharing them with you here and now.

What do the results mean?
Hmm ... It’s been years since I looked at the test. I think that they have a FAQ section that might provide some insight into the meaning of the results.
Mike, Redhorse and Chessfrog ... Did you like the results? Were they accurate representations of your perception of yourself?
The end results don’t tell us much about our positions on individual issues but serve to give an overall impression of our composite position on the political and economic scales provided.
I was fascinated by the test and in an effort to understand how the results were calculated I took the test two more times. The first experiment was to give the mild response to all questions and my scores didn’t change much. The second experiment was to give the strong response to all the questions and my scores went sharply to the left in each category.
In the final analysis the test is simply an interesting experiment in self-analysis.

There does seem some indication in your previous note that anyone who does not support affirmative action is a bigot. Do we have to have affirmative action to have a whole nation, certainly not. In fact, affirmative action seems to be a broken solution. Perhaps we should repair it and not abandon it, but we need to do one or the other.
Someon asserted earlier that white women are the biggest reciepients of affirmative action. But how can this not be an indication that is broken. Not only does it not help all the groups which it is intended to help, but it has over compensated. There are more women in college today than there are men. UNfortunately I do not have a source for this fact, but it is accurate.
If the point of affirmative action is to give people who have lead a disadvantaged life, then why not make it easier for those who have had a disadvantaged life to make the grade. Why not base “affirmative action” on income brackets rather than on race. Surely this is a more just approach, and perhaps it will get to all of the target groups more evenly.

with adult teachers you get into serious constitutional issues.
I think cops should live in the same city they “serve” but the
courts haven’t looked at it that way.
The Governor HAs to be a legal resident of the state.
I’m sure LEGALLY if the Mayor and School Board do but
it is desirable that they do.
