I cant believe I just lost a half hour I’ll never get back just scanning through all this. Sort of like a bad highway crash where you know you just wasting time looking, but somehow fascinated. Schadenfreude? Must admit its all has a humorous side, but have trouble fathoming what some like LB, Wolf, and Glock are doing making serious replies into this insane thread. Why not leave it to the experts. I suspect many posting here have direct knowledge of perceptions from far beyond the edge. Like Wiley Coyote, they try and achieve traction mid-air. But what is YOUR excuse?
If you want some idea of just far over the edge this has gone, I would say Mike-pre meltdown-has made the most cogent points overall. If there is an afterlife, poor Kurt will be nicked whirling dervish from all the spinning in his grave.
I look forward to Judge Judy’s decision on the coming lawsuits. And keep up the good work with bart, Mike. You even used a clean sock! Let me assist you in creating his future legend; son of Hawaii Jack! And thanks for providing the much need comic relief amidst the madness. Cabbie, I think you’re a bit paranoid in the other direction. While slavery was certainly an excuse, in reality it was all about the cash for the South, and keeping the white landowners in the style to which they’d become accustomed, despite the fact that their buisness was quickly becoming obsolete. They wanted slavery to spread simply so they could make sure that it could not be abolished.
As far as the Pacific war goes, while I’m sure it was a motivating factor for many to get behind the war, and of course the profiteers had a field day afterwards, I don’t seriously believe that they started the Pacific theater just for the resource gathering. The US at the time was very isolationist, and there was still plenty of stuff at home, and in South America where we already had our tendrils well emplaced.

Pondering your reaction, LB, Im reminded of the story of an art contest in ancient Greece. Two of the artist-I never remember names-were quite renowned for their realism. One, artist A-was arrogant, and believed his work to be far superior to that of B. Artist B, in contrast, suspected A was correct in his assessment, but had one very clever idea on how he might none the less prevail in the upcoming contest.
The big day finally arrived. All the paintings were on easels standing in a line in a park, and covered with lace curtains. They saved ‘A’ and ‘B’s entries until last, as it was a forgone conclusion one of the two would win. With a customary flourish, he pulled the curtain over his work back, to the collective gasp of the crowd. There before them was a portrait of ripe grapes on a vine that were so real, so vivid, that a few nearby birds flew up against the canvas trying to eat the painted grapes. Chasing the birds away, A laughed and turned to B as he stood before his still covered entry. “There, my work is so real I have fooled Mother Nature herself. So let us now unveil your painting, and see if you can match that.”
Please do the honors, B replied with just the trace of a smile. A reached to the easel and as his hand touched the canvass, he fell back in horror, staring in disbelief at the curtains, which he now realized were not real but had been painted by B.
You are very talented, B said in his sanguine manner of speech. Only a genius could have created an illusion so compelling as to fool the birds in the street. But always remember that I, my old friend, have even fooled YOU.

It’s better fun to go along with the play, tongue in cheek, than cynically collapse one’s willing suspension of disbelief and spoil it for the unsuspecting audience. That’s my philosophy.
Though many have thought that the character of Kilgore Trout was based on Ted Sturgeon, and though Vonnegut himself alluded to some autobiographical reflection, I have always thought Trout was a closer fit to Phil Dick. All artists steal from each other, but Phil Farmer might have gone a bit over the top. Still, “Venus On The Halfshell” is pretty good, nonetheless.
I heard a good math joke today while working out at Zeno’s Health Club:

P.S. I’d never mess with any of Mikey’s cats. I’m fond of cats. More so than I am of cat people, generally speaking. I’ve paid out some extravagant vet bills myself in my time, but blowing the greater part of six grand on a dead cat? I’ve been involved in some elaborate funerals for the sake of both my niece and my step daughter (“it’s nice she gets so much out of these little ceremonies, she’s had such bad luck with her pets”—- Gahan Wilson), however the biggest expense I’ve incurred is providing a shovel and a shoebox.

I think he comes out of that, but has moved definitely into the establishment Democratic camp. They have even used him on the Democratic radio response, for which he said nothing remotely offensive to the establishment. Sojourners is holding a conference at which there will be a Presidential forum. The only candidates to be included are highly establishment Democrats (Clinton, Obama, Edwards), all of whom favor a larger military, allowing any and all abortions even ones that are arguably infanticide, and the death penalty. In theory, these are opposed by Wallis and Sojourners, but in practice they are promoting a politics which favors all three.
Now generally the movement of which the article speaks has not gone this route, which I think is clear from this article. Wallis may properly be regarded as something of a precursor of the movement (he once was prophetic and much closer to what they are today), but today I think he can be said to have left the movement in favor of conventional partisan politics.
