What is the basis for describing Nigeria’s intervention in Sierra Leone as infamous?  The British intervention in S/L, successful though it may have been, is like someone coming in at the last moment to roof a house that others have built with limited resources and at great cost.  If others - Nigerians - hadn’t done the groundwork, there would have been no basis for the British ‘success’.  That is why, however we may criticise him at home in Nigeria, late Sani Abacha remains someone that the people of Sierra Leone remember as having come to their aid when others were doing pretty much the same kind of hesitation waltz that the US is now engaged in.  Of course, because Nigeria could hardly afford to keep its troops in S/L and Liberia (coupled with the stickiness of fingers supposed to be transmitting soldiers’ pay), and this undoubtedly led to their ‘living off the land’ to the discredit of all concerned.  Which is why it is to be hoped that we’ve extracted something more than vague promises of $10m to maintain our troops in Liberia this time around.
