Musharraf’s False Dichotomy

By Ahmad Faruqui

Pakistan’s autocratic president, Pervez Musharraf, has been in power for the past eight years. In November 2007, he gave himself another five-year term as president and stepped down as the army chief, six years past his retirement date. I don’t know about that conclusion.

Pakistan is another country where the US has made mistake after crucial mistake. Going back to the Reagan Administration where they knowingly allowed Pakistan to become a nuclear power, and knowingly allowed our tax dollars to actually pay for A. Q. Khan’s projects..to now our long standing monetary support of Musharraf...I doubt anything the US does will be considered good for the people of Pakistan.

The problem has always been the military leaders who dabble in election terrorism (you can try to monitor the actual election, but what of the crude tactics before that date?) and have really run the country no matter who is in charge in the past. Musharraf may have “resigned” his military position, but we know the military has its’ fingers all over the leadership. And this was true before Musharraf whether Bhutto or Sharif held the presidency.

It’s time the US turned within and remove itself from the whole of the Middle East and the surrounding area. Trying to support this or that leader, trying to war against this or that country, always, repeat ALWAYS, results in unforeseen consequences and blowback. We should end all monetary support. We should stop all trade of arms to the entire region, actually to the entire world.

But that won’t happen, too much money to be made by the military-industrial complex. So, we will go on blundering our way around, throwing bad money after bad policy as well as arming everyone to the teeth.
