By Steve Ellner

For the third time in less than three years, Venezuela President Hugo Chávez faces ouster, this time through a recall election made possible by the constitution drafted under his administration. The National Electoral Council (NEC) will announce in January whether oppositional forces were successful in collecting the 2 million-plus signatures needed to hold a recall. The NEC also will report whether… return to article

article, and the 2002 article, to be of very high quality owing to the fact that they both show an unusual and succsesfull effort to portray what in my opinion is pretty much the political reality of Venezuela.

If democracy is portrayed by the government of Fidel Castro then yes Venezuela is on the road to reach the “Sea of Happiness”.

The past 40 years were marred in corruption, mismangment, and ignoring the people but there are no word to describe the destruction Chavez has brought to Venezuela.

If Venezuela, and any other country for that matter, uses the present mutated form of American democracy as the example upon which to develop its government of its people, failure is imminent.  America is in the position Venezuela finds itself but too many Americans donít recognize it, and, because of this partial blindness, nothing is being done to correct our course.  Many elected officials in Americaís city, county, state, and national government should be recalled.  We are a Nation governed by elected officials who are controlled by the modern-day aristocracy.  The members of the aristocracy were not elected by the People yet nevertheless control the government of the Peopleóbut not by the People or for the People.

Americaís present form of democracy is government of the masses by the few and for the benefit of the ruling class.  It matters not whether Conservatives, Liberals, or Centrists gain the Presidency and even control of Congressóall are controlled by those who were not elected by the People.

Kensey Amaya, that bullshit.. I lived in Venezuela, I’m a Venezuelan, and I can tell you that that’s not true… Hugo Chavez is fighting for the true, the dignity and the democracy in a country wich last 40 years was ruled by a fist of facist and oligarchs… don’t let yourself be fooled, the International and private media in Venezuela are just defending their private interest…

We have nothing in common with Cuba just that we are Latinamerican brothers… ut the system is not the same and Chavez doesn’t want that for his country and his people… although nothing is so bad as Cuba as it said… but it will be another theme for discussion.

Dear Bob Apperson, although I don’t totally share your opinion since I can tell you that American democracy allows for the participation of the “common people”  that would be us.  “We” as a society can get things done.  This is not to say it is perfect, on the contrary there are many things that can and should be fixed.  Venezuela on the other hand, in my opinion, always had the problem of the lack of the participation of “society” which is problaly the only good thing Chavez has brought about, BUT, he has NOT allowed all of societies participation unless it benefits HIM.

Vinotinto, I am also a Venezuelan!  But because of the situation and the governments unwillingness, or rampent corruption, you decide, I have had to leave my country to seek my education here in the US.

If anyone wishes to discuss these issues further please put a post here and I will provide an on-line chat room that is free of cahrge, or you can provide one if you feel more comfortable.

Regardless of what you belive, please keep an open mind!
