Agency advises employers how to duck overtime pay

By Dave Lindorff

When the Bush administration announced plans last year for a controversial “reform” of New Deal-era wage and hour regulations, it assured Congress and labor unions that the proposal would make overtime pay available to some 1.3 million low-paid workers—even as it removed many high-paid employees from overtime protection. It now turns out that the administration’s Department of Labor (DOL), in… return to article

Could someone identify the specific report?  I have searched the Federal Register for 2003 and cannot seem to locate the report cited in the article.  Thank you and thanks for the thought provoking stories.

    Great article, thank you.

My question to all republicans: If you make under $150,000 a year, why in the world would you vote for George Bush??

The man comes from generations of people worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and he really doesn’t care about you. He doesn’t care about your kids, your house payments or your job. He’s never had to worry about it. Maid for the kids, trust fund for the house and a job from family friends. He doesn’t care about your sons and daughters going to war because he’s never worn a uniform. And he doesn’t care about your retirement, because his buddy Ken Lay all their millionaire friends have never worried a day in their lives about how to make the next car payment or childcare bill.

For God’s sakes people, what is the matter with you?

I’m honestly curious, because I can’t imagine why you would support a man who takes away your overtime. That’s your ability to support your family! If you have $100 million or more in a trust fund [as the Bush’s do] then at least it’s understandable why you’d support these people.

But if you work for a living, think long and hard about what kind of President would want to take away overtime for hardworking American families.

This proves it: The man does a disservice to American families and is a disgrace to his office. The proof is in his policies.

    Ed Mellon,

On Nov. 2 we’ll see just how deeply the masochistic streak in the American psyche runs. Let’s hope it’s just superficial.

I couldn’t find the report either.  Where did you search the Federal Register from?

Can I get a Link to the regulations published in the Federal Register, or at least a bibliography for this article?

Nevermind, I found some helpful links on this topic at the Mother Jones website and the Washington Post website

I’m not a doctor, but “ I play one on T.V.” and I have diagnosed the Bush dynasty with a serious , pervasive condition known as Duroc-Jersey Syndrom....I hear thru the grape-vine, most of the entire White House “residents” also suffer with this malady.....it’s contagious, and the Bush amigos would be well advised to get their inoculations....pronto.....it’s a piggish little disease.  Once stricken, the prognosis is grim and relentless, taking on the form of addiction....only our “last penny”, will eliviate the symptons.....I strongly suggest we begin “hoarding” our pennies.......
You know where your treasure is...Mine it!

Excellent. Another fine article on the subject is “Overtime: Born in Chicago, Creaking Towards Death” by Ramsin Canon in the webzine Gapers Block.

I just got my February 16th issue, read this article and immediately printed a copy for Ed.  Ed used to think W was a man of principle.  ITT’s helping me change his mind and (I hope) his vote.
