I assume press releases are printed verbatim in some papers, especially in some sections of the paper or magazine. It is dangerously naive to assume otherwise, especially concerning medical providers. As a taxpayer, one pays for government auditing of providers, but almost never can you get the audit results, except in the case of nursing homes. Nursing homes usually cannot afford the legal protection that a big university hospital can afford. Consequently, you can sometimes find the rate of bedsores for nursing homes. Don’t try to find it for your state-university hospital though. You are not likely to find even their rates of post-surgical infection. As a potential surgical patient, you are assumed to be too unsophisticated to interpret these statistics properly. Non-profit is not a designation I look upon with any trust at all. Some things called non-profit can be more self-serving than a compassionate for-profit. Less-advantaged people are better advised to start a for-profit that does not make money than to suffer the red-tape that pet non-profits should comply with. Non-profit red tape is designed to be paid for by lawyers and accountants who work for the for-profits where the money came from. Don’t ask me how I know this.
