Bombs Away!

An interview with Get Your War On creator David Rees.

By Daniel Sinker

It would be easy to get lofty when talking about David Rees’ Web comic Get Your War On. It would be simple to say how it exposes the absurdity of the war on terror; how his stark, repetitive approach to the strip (it’s all told using clip-art images) boils down the horror of the past year’s news reports, and lets youreturn to article

David Rees is amazing. Not only is he funny, but he answers his email and consented to sign his book and two posters that I had brought to New York with me from Seattle.

His band sounds pretty good as well; the guy just all-around rules.

Mr. Rees is successful because he is emotionally honest. George W. Bush could learn a thing or three from him. Long live “Get Your War On.”

The only thing of value that has come out of this Satan Place of a government.
Actually did stir some patriotic reaction- hey, there are others out there- must be America!

Thank you, thank you for your courage and for saying it for us.

“War on terror” is a Bushism and a solecism. War is terror.  The phrase should not be used without inverted commas.

“......half-expect George W. Bush to ìfuckiní rip his face off and itís gonna be Ming the Merciless up under thereî
    This is racist writing.
Why should the evil one have a Chinese name ? Why should stereotypes from a prior age of racist parochialism be recycled?
Although used flippantly, this would be the subject of a complaint in our country (to the Race Relations Office) and be illegal.
Who said “Flippancy is the commonest form of alienation”?
Good that people are working thro’ their alienation and we hope one day very soon the US will have a real democracy with proportional representation like us and Germany and lots of other free citzens.

In response to David Broatch’s comment about the use of the name “Ming the Merciless” ...

Ming the Merciless is the name of a comic book villain from the 1930s. He was also in a movie production of Flash Gordon in 1980.

Is it racist to compare our bad leader to bad leaders (or real fictional characters) who happen to be of different races? I don’t think so.

Was Ming from China? Well, in the comic book he was Emperor of the planet Mongo.

Hopefully that clears some things up, I do applaud your intentions. :)
