Unequal Education

No Child Left Behind demands equal test scores from neighborhoods with unequal incomes and resources.

I absolutely agree that the No Child Left Behind act has plagued our city schools even more than before, but where do you start? More importantly, HOW do you start? Chicago is closing schools left and right that are failing and relocating kids to charter schools that may perform better than the failing schools. As a teacher in training, I am not seeing any improvements in teacher education. Some of my classes are taught by those who have never taught before and it seems to perpetuate the problem. How do you define better teachers? How do you produce better teachers? And how do you stop those higher up who make decisions for the schools when they themselves have no background in education or social justice?

It is certainly a vicious circle that will continue until the companies and initiatives behind school reform readjust their priorities towards the best interest of the students. Until then, I fear that any type of reform will sink back into its ugly shell and continue to dislocate and mis-educate our kids.
