Patriarchy, New and Improved

By Susan J. Douglas

Any feminist, female or male, who has seen ABC’s The Bachelor was repulsed. For those who have missed this fine media offering, a carefully selected lunk of a guy—in the most recent case, Aaron—is presented with a harem of 25 also carefully selected young women, all slim, all conventionally pretty and most blonde. After sampling all the wares, he rejects… return to article

    gag.

I suppose that, at 44, my attitude would be considered a leftover from the seventies. How low we have sunk!

Frankly, I can’t stand any of these new types of shows, from Survivor on. From my perspective, the whole thing is so staged and phony that it amazes me anyone would buy into it.  Not to mention shows like Jerry Springer that sink to the lowest common denominator and glorify trash.

There are far more important and vital issues confronting us in our day, not the least of which is the current war in Iraq.

I’ll keep my tv escapism with History Channel and Discovery Channel shows, and retreat at times from the horror of what is currently happening in a sci-fi show like “Stargate SG-1”, where Carter is a female officer who stands side by side with her compatriots and is a valued member of the team.

again I say, for these new shows, gag.

There’s a reason why I don’t have cable and only use my television as a screen for viewing hand-picked DVDs and VHS tapes ... this particular show isn’t it, but it is certainly representative thereof.  Tired of paying $45 monthly for something that never offered me anything of interest, I cut the throat on cable service last summer.  I have never regretted the decision.

I also find this trend disturbing. I am a 14 year old, and to hear my classmates jabber on about
‘ohmygod did you see xyz last night? i know, ohmygod it was so good!!’
is sad and demeaning, not only to females everywhere but to the entire human race. what is even sadder is that most of these girls are intelligent, but completely don’t care about anything but boys and dates.
