Needed: A Vast Liberal Conspiracy

By Ana Marie Cox

For all the indoctrination going on—you know, gay recruitment, media bias, and liberal professor brainwashing—it’s awfully hard to find the central headquarters for the side that supposedly won the culture war. Believe me, I’ve tried. I know the right has recruitment centers and even training programs for young people interested in joining—and possibly leading—the conservative movement. There’s the Intercollegiate Studies Institute… return to article

The reason the republicans have a “training camp” is because there are so few young republicans. Most young people are democrat and as they get older lean more to the right.

We need a real conspiracy. this falls under the what conspiracy?

We need to get this going… a serious one

That DLC crack about the “Mcgovern-Mondale wing” is one more nail in the coffin of my Democratic Party membership. Traditionally, progressive Democrats weren’t a “wing” but the heart and soul of the party. If anything “transformed Democrats from a strong national party into a much weaker regional one,” it was the inevitable dissolution of the unholy alliance between liberal Northerners and Southern Dixiecrats. If the DLC’s answer to this process is to turn the party into a less reactionary branch of the GOP, they’ll have to do it without my support (or my vote).

United States Posted by Drew on Jun 17, 2003 at 2:45 AM

The DLC is a fifth column of Republicans whose aim is to lessen the differences between the GOP and the Democrats and to force the Democrats to compete on the GOP’s terms where the Democrats will NEVER have an upper hand.  They mistakenly believe that the Democratic Party needs to move to the right to win elections.  The only problem with that scenario is that too many DLC Democrats are already Republican-lite (look at Joe Lieberman), and when you run a Republican against a Republican, the voters will pick a Republican every time.  Have the Democrats learned nothing from the 2002 mid-terms?  Obviously not.

The DLC is hell-bent on reducing the differences between the parties, not increasing them.  They appear to want to take choice away from the voters and homogenize all politics in America into one big single-party system.

The DLC is part of the problem, not part of the solution.  The Democrats will never win elections if they continue to misrepresent their natural base at the behest of the DLC and continue in their failure to organize an effective counter to the GOP machine and to Republicans in general.  Cowering and kowtowing to the GOP never got them anywhere and it isn’t getting them anywhere now.

Standing up to the GOP for the people who have no voice and no special interest money is the way to win votes and energize voters.  Giving the voters a real choice and a strong voice is how to win elections.  Blurring the lines only helps the GOP.  It is sad that this is a lesson that many national Democrats including the milquetoast leadership appear to have failed to have learned.

United States Posted by Troy on Jun 17, 2003 at 1:00 PM

So Drew, who would you vote for? Our two last elected presidents were from the DLC—let’s not thrown the baby out with the bathwater, for god’s sake! We have to get this country moving in the right direction again. ANY dem who runs will have my vote, altho’ I have my preferences now. I just hope we don’t continue to ‘eat our young’ with remarks like they made about Dean. That only helps the other side.

United States Posted by Pat on Jun 17, 2003 at 1:13 PM

The problem with a “liberal movement” is that in doing so, one becomes the tool of the right wing conspiracy. In order to be progressive, one must teach the people without letting them know that their ideas are being changed. Inform them but don’t close them off by challenging their own beliefs. My idea was to start a program of joint neighborhood watch groups that would meet and discuss how to be a patriot. Once a person realizes what is constitutionally protected and what the “un-patriot act” has taken from them, I have no doubt that people would become more active.

United States Posted by Z on Jun 17, 2003 at 1:16 PM

By the way, in my opinion, the “right conspiracy” is to create so many political lines that people are never united and really all the possible decisions in politics end with one resolve. That is, you might think that your actions are changing the government but in reality it only validaes their existance and further institutionalizes them. Create your enemies, create your causes, and you can create your own ends.

Ana is absolutely correct.  The various left-of-center causes and organizations need to converge under the banner of the Democratic Party and create a devoted mission built around five or six critical national and international issues, ie.,  multi-lateral foreign policy,  economic sanity, civil liberties,  the environment, health insurance, and preservation of the social contract.  Prior to the convention, the DNC should invite delegates from these disparate groups and construct a platform amenable to all and pursue it with a vengeance.

Since everyone in this part of the world—-deep south—-is wandering around in a stupor, I welcome information as to how we can fight back.  The fascism igniting in the country frightens me.  The scariest part is the ‘duping’ of the general population.  In Alabama, people seem more interested in keeping the “Ten Commandments” display in the state capitol than their own future.  They simply blame the Clintons for all their economic woes.

They just can’t imagine that “their” President could be capable of deliberate deception.  I am willing to do anything to try to wake people from this malaise. Count me in!

I have been saying for a while that we on the left need to heed the words of Thomas Jefferson: “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.”  Poll after poll shows that mainstream America shares more in common with traditional Democrats than with the radicals in charge of the Republicans (or, for that matter, conservative Dems).  The Republicans have them convinced, however, that we’re all just a step away from becoming another John Walker Lindh.  I believe that mainstream America just needs to see a little bit of gratuitous patriotism on the left.  I know it can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but if we just bring flags to our anti-Bush rallies, or slap flag stickers next to our leftie bumper stickers; if we make clear that we oppose Bush &co;. because we love this country and the principles it was founded upon, I believe that a large portion of mainstream America would drift over to our side.  Keep our principles.  Keep our issues.  They are good and right and true and American.  But as much as we usually tend to distrust such actions, I believe we must begin to wrap ourselves in the flag.

A part of the Right Wing that has been very successful is the Christian fundamentalist wing.  This is because they have portrayed themselves as the force that cares about spiritual issues.  The Left’s failure to address spirituality has lead many to believe their hunger for a larger framework of meaning and purpose must be separated from their involvement with social transformation.

Progressives need to not be affraid to acknowledge the need for a spiritual dimension in our lives.  The “style” of spiritual search, however, should not be dictated.  The spiritual base of love and compassion are indeed the “higher level” where all progressive social movements are derived from.  Progressives need to face the fact that by only working through love can our social and environmental ills be cured.  Let’s give equal priority to our inner lives and to social justice.

I’m with you Chuck! America is so eager to believe in the “miracle of salvation through death” that the most important thing in life is planning for death. They would never be fooled by their government because “in god we trust”. Yet the CIA in its formation, was labelled a “shadow organization”. These were congresses words not mine. You are right when you call America a fascist nation. Thank god someone else out there realizes that they are creating the future by silencing the opposition.

Interesting story, but this is not a time to despair.  The DLC may trash Dean, but as of today, he has 34,049 supporters nationwide that get together each month to work on taking back this country from the right-wing anti-American Ashcroft/Bush liars and thieves.  You can join us by going to http://dean2004.meetup.com
P.S. You will discover that the Dean groups are part of more than a political movement, there is a Civil and Cultural movement to reclaim our country, our ideals and our proud progressive history.  Please join us soon, we need people to defeat the rove $ machine.

I must agree with Chuck, Curt, and Z.  Remember that MLK JR was a Baptist minister.  Much of the progressive movement used to be rooted in spirituality.  We must craft a movement that will invite those who are called to social action by way of their faith, while not disinviting our many agnostics and atheists.  We must embrace true religious freedom.

The mantra of great leaders used to be “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”. Now we are being told we must feel the presence of terror. Are we supposed to be orange-level scared today? I have seen the future of America and it includes shock-troops with anti-information sentiments. They’ve been around my house for the last 6 months! Check out chameleon uniforms, especially a site Appendix A, and realize that what they have is much better than what they have posted. The only dead give away is that these suits radiate just like a television when you turn them off and are a little too bright for the background. The reason I bring this up is because it was discussions just like these that attracted them to my house and specifically a letter I sent to the ISO organization. Also, because of the patriot act, these people no longer need warrants to investigate or tap our phones due to the fact that we can all be labeled “terrorists”. Does anyone know why every part of the 130 page patriot act ends with “and other things”. I can’t even come up with 130 other things let alone in addition to the already 130 pages of defined “un-American sentiment” outlined by this act. Part of the problem that got us to this point is that we have a two party system. One should study history to realize the future. Democrat-Republicans was one party and still is.

PI, help me understand"Social action by way of their faith”. For the last forty years I voted as a Baptist, Liberal Democrat. Today I am so dissapointed at the Democratic leadership, if there is such thing, that I am contemplating on voting for the Green Party. All the comments on this article show such fractionation within us liberal democrats. Is that the problem?  Also,we Latinos have the same problem of fractionation because we believe all the lies coming from everybody that wants our votes. In my faith,  as a Christian I have more disappointments. The leadership is down and out. On top of the scandals, I go to my Church to see on the screen the picture of George Bush and the war on Irak? Give me a break or give me a sound, progressive-liberal-leftwing-compassionate-Christian advice. I am retired and I have all the time to be re-trained as a Liberal Democrat.Show me the way.

Thanks for this article. It is dead on the money. We progressives need a counterpart to the right wing Policy Promotion Think Tanks like Cato, Heritage Fndtn, AEI, PNAC, etc.
I’ve written extensively about this in articles that have appeared in opednews.com and buzzflash.com

There are no existing progressive think tanks that “get it” yet, that it’s not about being a usual think tank. it’s about getting progressives organized behind some simple themes and then promoting the hell out of them. If we fail to do this, then the right wing will right skewed history books about the late, not so great, extinct Democrat party.

United States Posted by Rob Kall on Jun 17, 2003 at 8:04 PM

Actually the left has MORE money available but they do not use it effectively.  The right funds advocacy organizations —it sets up organizations that exist only to spout right-wing ideology.  The left does not.  As a result the right is able to undermine everything that the left DOES fund, by moving the public away from supporting them, and to vote for right-wingers.

Here’s a recent story on this, at http://www.smirkingchimp.com/article.php?sid=11625&mode=nested&order=0

While building up a liberal conspiracy (though the right would have you believe it already exists, especially in the form of the media ... that’s a myth!) we should also get some humor that jabs the R’s moving through the ‘net. The only political humor folks seem to circulate is tired old stuff poking fun at the Clintons. The Onion, The Daily Show and occasional late-night comics do a job on the Bushies, but there seem to be few anti-R. gags in circulation on the ‘net.

I believe one training institute was recently started in Washington.  However, just as the Rethuglicans wandered in the desert for nigh about 40 years, it may be the time for the Democrats to do so.  Over those 40 years the Rethugs built a plan and worked it for years.  They developed think tanks and talking points and stuck to them.  And they stuck together.  Unless Dems, greens and other liberals do same they will not sway the pendulum back to center left at all.  Put your nose to grindstone and we can swing it back in about 20 years.  I know it seems a long time, but some long term thinking is needed now.

I’m glad Deb Pierce mentioned Wellstone Action. While looking for nonviolence resources a couple months ago, I found there’s also another progressive/ lefty training program in Illinois—the Midwest Academy, which was founded by an SDS member in the wake of the Chicago area anti-redlining campaigns of the late ‘60s. It offers classes and links to jobs for socially minded troublemakers.

I, too, think that one of the biggest problems facing the democratic party is its right ward shift. We need some guts. The 04 election will be the first time I will be able to vote ( i recently turned 18, already have my voter registration card). I want to see the democrats out there saying all the truly wonderful things that they do believe in. Fortune favors the bold. We need to scream about all the evil going on and not aquiesce to the pressure of an ever right ward shifting society. Focus on the youth because most of us are VERY angry about the war and Bush’s lies and those who aren’t are just ignorant and need to have the truth of his evil shown. Once the youth get angry enough and inspired enough we WILL VOTE and WE WILL GET OUR FRIENDS TO VOTE. Inspire us. We want to be INSPIRED. The world for us looks bleak. Show us hope and we will all gladly help. Secondly, the old people love to vote. Medicare and Medicade are in a terrible spot keep reminding them. We need not fear being LIBERAL. Why is liberal a dirty word. Liberal means free. No liberals in office now and thats why we are all so oppressed. Radicalism isn’t bad either. Through around the word Nazi because Bush and his buddies are very Nazi-esque. Our nation is vulnerable—just like post ww1 Germany—and a raving lunatic plays on the fears and the “patriotism” of the people to endorse his war machine and his desire for POWER. Stand up and shout liberal idealogy and it will not isolate it will bring the disillusioned out to vote. People feel hopeless and unrepresented. Say something interesting for goodness sake. Flashiness is never bad either. This may sound a bit nuts but in the primary vote for the most attractive candidate, Bush is ugly and people are shallow. Ok i’ve spoken my peace.

I say we need to focus on keeping the liberals liberal. People always say, “oh when I was young I used to believe that….then I grew up..” WHY!? We need to change this.

United States Posted by persa on Jun 19, 2003 at 12:59 AM

Persa, what happens is that people grow up and conservative ideas are more appealing to an older person. Most repubs. don’t start thinking that way until 35. Whether it is because they support limited government (people keeping their own money) or whatever. As people grow their opinions change toward the conserv. side.
Churchill once said that conservative at 20 doesn’t have a heart, but a liberal at 40 has no brain. That’s a pretty accurate assessment of people’s politcial views are (mostly)

United States Posted by Brad on Jun 19, 2003 at 11:28 PM

The article was good and I’ll gladly sign up to any left wing conspiracy I can find. This assumtion that liberals are only young needs to be challenged-I am an older person and my husband is a disabled vet-we grow more left by the minute (and so do our even older parents)as we see our civil liberties disappear and our basic needs be shunned for a war machine that seems unquenchable. I think there are many more of us and despite what that ol goat Churchill said we do have a brain-many brains-to be used in the service of revolution-now don’t get frightened my docile dems-revolution is change and change is what we need for a fairer, freer and more compassionate country. What ever happened to the idea of the Greater Good? We have to dispell these widely and loudly dispersed myths by the O’Reilys and the Wolf Blizers and all the rest-war is not peace-being compassionate and giving is not dumb or unrealistic and patriotic acts do not come in only one color and giving the rich even more money will not fix anyone’s economic woes. You wouldn’t think such basic truths would be that hard to stand up for. And stand up for them we must for Lana from TX is right. The Bushies are very Hitleresque -and implementing their agenda in very similar ways-stealing elections, passing legislation limiting civil liberties, controlling the media, soothing the rich, indocternating the young and attacking countries that are a “clear threat” but have not attacked us. It’s very scary stuff and I never thought it would touch this country. While I do not beleive Bush has the brains to do what Hitler did, his henchmen do and what concerns me most is that the Democrats seem to be walking around in some vast and numbing state of denial. Every time I try to get involved the DLC does something that I cannot stomach and I am sent back to my garden ranting about the state of country and planning our escape to Canada. How do we talk to leaders that seem to not only not be listening but seem to be living in another world?

United States Posted by Kate on Jun 20, 2003 at 1:47 AM

The Republican machine in vogue today will be shortlived. Devisive and heavyhanded conservative policies in the end will i believe alienate many who felt compelled to vote Republican in 2000. One only has to recall many of the campaign statements by Bush of “a more humble foreign policy”,“we will not be involved in nation building”, etc.  that will come home to roost. Democrats need to stop trying to dress themselves as jr. Republicans and start to act as the progressive/liberal party they are supposed to be. Appeal to the core values of the country ( national security, ethical government, personal freedom, compassion ) that is so lacking in todays administration. Republicans may be in control of policy at this point in time, but those same policies will come back to haunt them as implementation of them see’s the full light of day. Capitalizing on the fears of a nation (terrorism) will become ineffective as time passes and people once again concentrate on the issues which affect them more on a day to day basis (education, economy, environment) and realize these issues aren’t being properly addressed. Democrats who change their stripes to be more in line with the conservative view will lose in the end because they will be seen as a rudderless ship, altering it’s course with with every directional change in the wind.

eric. even though I agree with how Bush has moved away from compassionate conservatism as he said he would go by in 2000, his popularity has jumped since then. In 2000 about 47-50% of people voted for Bush, just this week bush got a 66% approval with 25% disproval. so maybe our country is going right.

The science of spinning lies and propaganda has been fine tuned and pervasive. The manipulation of media is today they’re latest victory.(FCC) The main tool used is “Fear and Loathing"to brianwash the suseptable masses into a “borg” like collective of homogeous thinking. Tapping predjudice, religeous fanatasizm, wag the dog of war, recession, terror threats etc. to create an atmosphere where they can convince quivering fools like every cult has learned. We must unfortunatly use some of the same tactics to combat this evil threat to freedom.    The battle must start at the top by revealing bush’s greatest weakness, that the headline hungry major media will sieze upon: scandal!, the cover up of the drunk driving ARREST exposed at the end of the supposed election! Who are the other three people in the car that night? How were they silenced? The same with the police and everyone else involved. bush # 1 thats how! until the democratic party recognizes ALL of the rights guaranteed to the people by the constitution, the republicans will continue to devour those same rights. there is no possible way to have “free speech"and “freedom from offending speech” at the same time. nor is there any way to reconcile amendments 9 and 10 with the federal court’s order that the state of alabama remove the ten commandments from the courthouse. as the democrats try to deprive our citizenry of their guaranteed right to keep and bear arms, the republicans continue to destroy the rights guaranteed by amendments 4 and 5 (try demanding a warrant for a search, or refusing a breathalyzer, and tell me how secure you are in your home, or how you dont have to give evidence against yourself). the left wing conspiracy needs to center on the “mind your own business” policy of Dean. the left has given us too many well-intentioned father figures and nannies, and all it does is insure the election (or appointment) of well-intentioned idiots from the right, both more than willingly to shove their views down the throats of the citizenry. if we dont get Dean as a candidate, we will have more of bush. and if Dean doesnt make it clear that he represents the “mind your own business” wing of the party, the nannies will continue to cast him as a mcgovernite. the conspiracy starts with the people. get enough indians together, and we will find a chief.

The answer could be http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org ,
but these until Jesus starts performing miracles, or Liberals get behind our ideas we penniless “Liberals Like Christ” will not be able to compete with the Radical RICH Religious Right.

The code for your form is malfunctioning, as it rejects my regular email “Ray@LiberalsLikeChrist.Org” as “Not Valid”.  That’s the one I prefer to use, rather than the one your code forced me to use.
