Creating Better Choices

By Joel Bleifuss

We each inhabit our own individualized media landscape: We choose what we read, what we see and what we hear. But these choices are determined by what is available. Media corporations hold a near monopoly on the information that the vast majority of us rely on to make sense of the world. This dominant media sets the boundaries of permissible thought,… return to article

A progressive understanding for a sustainable ‘new world order of peace (nwop)’ was sidelined when the value of the ‘peace corp’ was sidelined to an international ‘junior year abroad’.

Where the progressive educated left could find a vivifying place in the nwop is in using their platform to advocate ‘open borders for labor and cultural lifesupport exchange’ and, thereby, increasing knowledge of ‘the other’.  Give free labor&culture; the same value “free” trade in the nwop!

We definitely need to turn this country around. As we have seen with California, when you let Democrats/Liberals in charge of all 3 branches of government you get- a total freaking disaster.

Highest debt per capita of any state. Poverty everywhere. Health care eviscerated. Crime exploding. What an embarrassment.

Studs Terkel and his diagnostic accuracy ” the national Alzheimer disease” is the absolute truth. How can we forgett all the lies? The Viet Nam war, the Iran-Contra connection, and now the WMDs. Every time that I sit to watch the news I remenber of all the misinformation that I have been expose to. No wonder we develop Alzheimer’s disease, is the easy way out.

Progressive thinkers do need to ask themselves how to more effectively communicate to a broader public.  I believe some of the reasons we sort of get stuck has to do with our level of ethics, knowledge and concern for our world as compared to our more conservative competitors.  Face it, it is tough to debate with someone who uses mischaracterizations, character assasinations and manipulative linguistics all for purposes of simply “winning” rather than creating the best solutions which serve our whole country, not just part of it.

In my view, we should improve communicating in an offensive manner (rather than diving into the trees to defend our forests, so to speak).  That defensive tendency to detail specifics muddles the fundamental and far simpler starting positions that progressives build upon (which ARE noble and DO offer a far brighter vision than any ideologue).

We also need to learn to ask the tough yet basic questions.  For example, my brother is an extremely conservative high school graduate.  He commented on all those terrorists in Iraq.  I agreed with him that it was a terrible mess over there.  Then, asked him what he thought is the difference between “terrorism” by radicals and “resistance” by people who’s country is being occupied.  I asked what we would do if another country took over our nation.

I don’t know.  I guess, overall, we should consider simplifying our message.  Then, taking it from there.
