Beyond Regime Change

By Jeff Epton

The “anybody but Bush” mantra that progressives are using to focus their energies this election season is working wonderfully well. George II now appears to be carrying more baggage than his father did in 1992. And even the sudden disappearance of the Dean campaign has proved [RETURN TO ARTICLE]

This is an important argument as it emphasizes the role of the people at the base of th eprogressive movement in making and implementing policy, not just the very wobbly leadership of the Democratic Party.

Right on! This is the progressive plan being designed right now at Dean for America and locally at MeetUps. We Dean Delagates plan to stick together in order to take a progressive message to Boston that will be included in the platform. Many of us are supporting candidates all over the country by sending money; many are running for local elections; many have joined their local Democratic Party. I’m going to go to work for a union and I’m telling every Dean supporter, “Join a union or start one at your work.”

I’d add to this editorial the need to lobby the elected officials we already have. In lots of the blue states (and in hundreds of cities) we already have progressive electeds serving in Democratic-controlled legislatures. We should engage in the legislative process and lobby for some of the issues we believe in. Why wait until November 3rd?

I’m from Canada and I really believe that I’m seeing what is happening in America as a fly on the wall that sees what is really going on. It makes me sad and inserts a feeling of hopelessness. I really hope that if someone does overthrow Bush’s elite business regime can run things honestly.

The Dean Meetups that I attended were a great way to see Democracy in action and to feel a part of a community collective of people who really want change and just aren’t content with throwing things at their tv. I was able to make some great contacts as a result of the DEAN meetups.

The Dean Meetups were great…got to network with alot of people who were not content to just sit home and throw things at their tv…they took their anger and channeled it in a positive way.

Good job Jeff.  Hope everything is going well with you and the family.

Have you seen this call for the November 3d Movement.  I found it provocative and exciting.  It fits in nicely with what you are saying I think.

The article is “The Election is Over: We lost.”  It’s by Sam Smith from the Progressive Review.
