Synthetic turf is recognized by school and parks officials, the NFL, World Cup soccer, and sports and recreation leagues around the world to provide a consistent and safe playing surface year-round, when high usage, climatic conditions, and other factors make it impossible to maintain a lush, safe grass field.
Numerous independent studies validate the human health and environmental safey of synthetic turf. Several were published in the past year: California EPA published,

Thanks Gemma. Nice partial summary. But not the full story of this plastic rug on rocks (thin tufted tarp with barely 2 inches of tire crumb swept in, directly on top of rocks . Check out www.synturf.org for moreinformation. Key to note is something you do mention- the plastic field vendors themselves are starting to switch to alternatives. they know crumb rubber’s days are numbered. But the profit margin is so high on the toxic waste tire crumbs that they want to try to get as many of the expensive rock tire and plastic rug fields in as fast as possible. Essentially the companies function like drug pushers- get us hooked then we have no choice but to go back to them for more - even if the more is other crumbed material among the plastic blades. ,
The article shouldn’t have stopped at the partial truths about studies from the industry rep but asked someone who knows the other studies and has no vested interest. All the studies are inconclusive in various ways, but many draw “broad brush “conclusions which are not supported on the weak evidence. As found from the Northeast to the west coast Lead IS clearly a problem in older fields, and possibly newer fields , which thanks to the EPA and CPSC are not being tested except in California.
Among the uncertainties about the levels of all the known toxins it is acknowledged that Zinc clearly does leach out in amounts that can be toxic to aquatic organisms - a result that is noted but mostly ignored since zinc is not similarly toxic to people. Also could have noted that the conditions on the field are often more extreme than any field testing has done- particularly in terms of extreme heat (120-170 deg F in full sun) and aged plastic and rubber particles. Not mentioned is that the field’s heat is due as much to the dark green plastic as to the crumb rubber (just leave a piece of dark plastic or green plastic turf in the full sun for a while then touch it. OUCH!) Also not mentioned is the sheer unsustainability of taking away tons of soil, bringing in tons of rock and gravel and tire crumb and acres of tufted plastic tarp. Not to mention the disposal issues and costs every 5-8 years , at which time the whole wasteful cycle begins again, and again and…. If you want to go back to grass - you need to spend millions of dollars to undo what is essentially a parking lot (they did this in Toronto after only 2 years of plastic).
Or the fact that the fields need to be disinfected since a piece of plastic and shredded tires have no ability to break down bird droppings, vomit and blood (rain won’t do it- where will the stuff go? and like your car which rain won’t get clean, the field must be cleaned somehow). So much for saving water - not to mention having to spray it and the players to keep the blistering temperatures down in the summer sun, while grass actually cools and cleans the air.
Or the problem with the crumbs moving around creating dangerous “turf potholes” if the fields is not “groomed” with a tractor pulling a special rake often. An estimated half cup of tire crumbs leaves with each althlete , so more tire crumb needs to be added and worked in often. So much for low maintenance.
Finally, plastic grass is so mid 20th century (think the Graduate) ! 21st century beautiful durable natural grass fields ensure good drainage by good soil prep, the right grass cultivars for the region, irrigation if needed at all with collected stormwater, and organic maintenance practices without the use of toxic chemicals and fertilizers. And they can stand up to levels of play that begin to shred the artificial turf fields , which then cost half a million to a million dollars to replace. Grass is almost infinitely renewable and at MUCH lower cost .

Yes, the online environment obviously offers mass dispersal into the world and that’s not possible in a print library environment. But part of our library project is about collapsing the polarization between print and digital, and looking toward a third way where a library can be a hybrid analog-digital space. Books are both retained and valued, and where a digital collection exists, maybe it allows more freedom with what the analog collection can do, because you can always do a keyword search of the digital collection. Maybe the benefits of one liberate the other.

The Indians are positive people they look at life with the outlook that they are one with the ground and love all that the earth consist of because they 642-359 feel that it is a part of them becasue it has been with them since the beginning of time. Americans just look at the world as a place that we live and take in all of its resources with out even a thanks to where it 646-230 came from. Indians and Americans are bothe different racess of people who think in terms of the long term goal of personal enlightenment with the world and other human beings. The Native Americans are perfect role models for what an ideal shoule do in life and how one should behave towards the world because indians are natural people who believe in the inner good of all living and non living object. This just proves the point about how for Americans can be willing to go to be one with the 646-656 earth as Native Americans have come to be. Surely it has taken many years to take on this position of being one with the spiritual earth and physical earth becasue this is not just somthing that comes over night. The all knowing subject is one that comes PW0-104 through age and wisdom is stored through age along with the love of all things. Earth is a place to be loved and shared with everyone.
