Thanks to Bill Fletcher Jr and Nelson Lichtenstein for a great analysis of recent developments in SEIU. The authors are well informed and passionately engaged, but temper their commitment to deep union reform with a balanced and moderate tone that respects the complexity of SEIU. A model for all of us to follow!

The current conflict within SEIU and with NUHCW is indeed tragic, but a very necessary one. The fact that healthcare workers on the West Coast are resisting is actually a good sign. It shows that under Roselli’s leadership these rank & file workers have been taught the basics of good trade unionism and will not settle for the top down, company union appraoch of Stern and his side kick Anna Burger.
I happen to live in Texas where few healthcare workers enjoy the benefits of a union contract. It seems to me rather than making war on his own membership, Stern ought to be concentrating on real organizing from the bottom up in places like Texas and other southern states. (On the other hand perhaps we are better off without Stern’s sell out union approach)
In this day and age American workers need organized labor like never before. However no one deserves a union that is going to do the boss’s bidding. Andy Stern obviously doesn’t think that the American worker has sense enough to know this.
It is indeed tragic that SEIU under the leadership of Andy Stern has become the albatross of the American labor movement. The once vibrant and progressive SEIU can be described as an agent of the bosses in the health care industry. It has been fully documented how the SEIU undermines workers by colluding with management at the expense and detriment of both home care and health care workers in California. Union members, politicians, the academic world, activists and religious communities throughout California are aware of the many backroom deals that the SEIU has made with the bosses.
What the American labor movement desperatley needs is a democratic member led union—not SEIU’s corporate unionism which appears to be interested more in collecting union dues than representing workers.

the unions in this country have a lot of pot bellied tea party types who, in my opinion need to be exiled from his or her union. Any union member who trashes another union needs to be cast out as well.

Right on, brother/sister.
Yes, please, let’s have more demonization of SEIU. It makes RedState and the other right-wing, anti-union web sites so very happy and gives them great free content when they re-post these “trashings”.

It is very sad to know that SEIU is going through such a pathetic time in their history. This indeed affect our workers and I was wondering if government can do something for the hard working Americans. Some people do enjoy benefits from their union memberships but some people find it to totally useless. - jordan
