Bush Bullies the World

Outrage at the arrogant administration won’t stop the war juggernaut

By Ian Williams

United Nations—Before the fog of war comes the drizzle of diplomacy. While the TV trucks line up outside the United Nations, Washington has already made the important decision. There almost certainly will be a war against Iraq within weeks. U.S. forces will be in place by the end of February, when the desert temperatures start rising. The question is whether the… return to article

UN Security Council Response to Bin Laden Tapes—
In December 2001 Israeli intelligence leaked that Bin Laden was found dead in Afghanistan. But U.S. intelligence quickly tried to silence the fact and dispatched to its media functionaries (Reuters et al.) false reports that, like Elvis, Bin Laden is still alive. His death would weaken support for the oil war in Afghanistan. Conveniently, when U.N. support for US attempts to take over Afghanistan and Iraq’s oil resources wanes, new tapes of “Bin Laden” with 3-year-old photos of him suddenly appear in the media—Elvis and Bin Laden are alive! The U.N. Security Council and the inspection teams found no evidence at all for the claim that Bin Laden and President Hussein are working together. Just weeks before the U.S.-U.K. planned “Operation Desert Spring” goes into effect for the two powers to take over Iraq’s oil resources, a tape is “discovered” of Bin Laden coming back from the dead to tell us “there is a link,” here it is it from his own words! Did the U.N. go for it? Even after the media blitz about the tape where Bin Laden supposedly tells us there is a link between him and Sadam, a member of the U.N. Security Council stated on 2/14/03 that there is no evidence of any link between Bin Laden and the president of Iraq. Conveniently, this comment, which was shown on international television, is not included in the media rehashes of what was discussed. Why? Because it would show that much of Europe knows the Bin Laden tapes were created by the CIA as propaganda warfare to justify the military coup of Iraq and the U.S.-U.K. takeover of Iraq’s oil reserves. Some people know that Bin Laden and Elvis have been dead for years.

You all miss the point of why Bush wants to invade Iraq.  Its not for Oil.  Although thats a nice bonus for him.  It is to improve his popularity ratings at home and to divert attention from his domestic policies.

Iraq is an easy defenseless target.  If Iraq could defend themselves Bush would not even consider invading.

The Enron scandals caused the Bush adminstration to talk about Iraq and get corporate fraud out of the headlines.  It was so successfull it became thier election strategy.  Now it is his only hope of relection.

This really tells you a lot about the character of this adminstration.  They are willing to murder hundreds of thousands of people just to improve juniors poll ratings.

I took part in the Peace March in London. It would seem that about a million people were there. Those I spoke to were not against the American people but the administration that stole America for its own purposes. Most,if not all, recognised Saddam as an evil tyrant. All agreed that he should be disarmed. All wanted it done peacefully. One banner read “bombing for peace is like fcuking for virginity”. The Greek philosopher Euripides said that “every man is like the company he is wont to keep”. I would keep the company of Mandela, The Pope, Archbishop Tutu and the peacemakers of the European body politic rather than that of Bush, Rumsfeld, Rupert Murdoch and the sad creatures of Fox. Most of all I was proud to keep the company of those who marched around the world for peace. Americans, be proud of your country and ashamed of the killer from Texas and his warmongering henchman. You will regain your country as we will regain Britain from Blair and his sad little government. It will be hard to forgive but impossible to forget.

While (some) Americans may believe that oil is not the determiming factor in this war, most of the rest of the world has no doubt that oil IS the main factor. I only hope that France will use her veto at the U.N. to prevent Bush gov’t having any legitimacy in the eyes of the world when it begins this war. I hope France and other N.A.T.O. members will also refuse to let the U.S. gov’t use N.A.T.O. resources and/or support. The U.S. has the ‘big stick’ and has shown no hesitancy to use it in the past, but maybe this is the time that the’western’ world will refuse to condone it. It is expected here in Canada that the Bush gov’t will hit us with economic retaliation if Canada stands against, but many of us hope our gov’t will stand firmly on the side of peace anyway.

Let us finally realize that Bush is not exactly stupid.  He is actually a fast learner with limited scruples.  He learned the value of bullying from the Republican thugs who stopped the Dade County vote recount.  He learned the value of scaring the American people from the 2002 elections.  It’s all the rest of us who have been slow on the uptake.

Let’s not get too hasty with our generalizations of America’s “chicken hawks.”  Rumsfeld may be excessive in tactics, and Wolfowitz may duck under our radar screens, but that does not mean that either of them are stupid.  Perhaps not the best diplomats, but I’d encourage critics to read up—especially on Wolfowitz—before categorically judging his intelligence.

We, the peace marchers, have hardly ‘aligned with the target’ as Williams suggests.

Most of us are as aware of the brutality, genocide and WMD in Iraq as we are of, er, brutality, genocide and WMD in North Korea, China and Russia, or anyplace else.

The inevitability of a war on Iraq apart, the global peace marches were also characterised by sympathy with the plight of the Palestinians and a intense distrust of the Bush administration.

Even if—- which is still a big ‘if’—- everything runs smoothly with the invasion, there is now a big swell of opposition to the Bush/Blair agenda and a resurgent political left.

This will rumble on into other issues and conflicts long after the tanks have reached Baghdad.

You are forgetting that the terrorists mindset, and the ignorance of Islam, coupled with Western destructive technology = dead you. Bush is protecting the pampered you’s who have your heads in the sand.

The corporate government, having firmly ensconced itself by means of a shameless judicial coup d’etat, bellows and pounds its chest to the world, declaring its right to destroy whomever it wants, whenever it wants, for any reason or for no reason at all.  While the press sleeps and the legislature plays dead, the relentless massacre machine of George WWIII Bush, who justly earned his mass murder credentials one execution at a time as Texas governor, prepares to bathe itself luxuriantly in both blood and oil.  One can only hope that somehow or other the rest of the world will bring these horsemen of the apocalypse to their chicken hawk knees, and that those other countries’ governments have more mercy on innocent U.S. citizens than Bush Incorporated demonstrates in Iraq.

All this talk about Chicken Hawks over the past year, but it seems as if none have stopped to consider what it is that a real Chicken Hawk does:  Eat chickens—in the case of Iraq that would be Uday, Qusay, and Saddam Hussein, and throw in Mr. Chirac while your at it.

What silliness.  The article obviously mischaracterizes administration positions. Nothing is said about 13 years of noncompliance with 17 UN resolutions.  Articles written in derogatory terms, full of perjoratives and name-calling statements don’t do credit to the author or the magazine - and of course they are very unpresuasive - too much stridency and emotion.

Yes, Embarassed American, Yes! When I first heard of this ridiculous idea of “regime change” I likened it to my older brother beating up my younger brother, then, when he would go tell the old man, my older brother would point at the one he was just beating up and say, “Well, I found cigarettes under his bed!” to divert the old man’s anger.
And the public is dumb enough to buy it.
Anybody know if I can get a job in Australia and move there?
