I don’t believe they do. I also don’t believe that their real concern is the US Constitution. They are mostly a group of racists and fascists who want to create violence and havoc to promote their disgusting views. They have stirred up by an atmosphere of hate and hysteria fomented by the lies of right wing pundits and the Republican Party. All these forces are a threat to our democracy. They are making numerous death threats to anyone they disagree with and have committed nauseating acts of violence. Obama should use any means available to stop them.

In the free marketplace of ideas, money can often win the argument. There has been a flood of it from bank bailouts, health insurance proceeds, wealthy ‘conservatives’, oil companies and other corporations. Lobbyists handle massive amounts. The Chamber of Commerce can funnel it to media to hide the actual source and a lot goes to Rupert Murdoch’s minions.
Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich are highly paid Fox News political analysts. So are Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity. These are the people that initiated and nurtured the tea party movement. Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News, has all of them on his payroll.
Given Murdoch’s role, it is no surprise that the tea party message is corporate. Denying global warming is good for oil companies, opposing health care reform benefits insurance companies and pharma, blocking renewed regulation of the financial sector satisfies banks and sets the stage for another even worse collapse of the economy, privatization removes activities from public oversight, deficit mongering that leads to cuts in government spending could devastate the economy. (Economists like Joseph Stiglitz, Paul Krugman and James Galbraith opine that the stimulus was much too small and that, given the amount of joblessness, more is needed.) This is not time to balance the Federal Budget. If tea partiers have their way, we are in for much worse.
TP’s cry “Socialism” as if that were a complete argument. Few of them would likely renounce Social Security or Medicare. We should learn some lessons from countries that are functioning well: Finland has the highest quality education in the world, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway all have well-run social programs. All have mixed economies where government does what is best public, and the private sectors are thriving as well. Taking a meat axe to government is no solution.

Media concentration is one of the more severe threats to democracy. Murdoch has all but taken over the Republican party, but don’t just take my word for it.

My understanding of what the Tea Party advocates goes like this. They would like…
* to repeal the health care reforms just passed. This will allow insurance companies to continue to exclude sick people, drop them when they become too expensive, and continue their layer of bureaucracy that actually does control the system.
* to balance the budget because one of their main interests is ‘fiscal responsibility’. Probably they will want to cut or privatize Social Security. There is no doubt that spending cuts at the federal level will cause massive economic slowdown. States are already faced with large cuts in services, teachers, police, and so on. In anticipation of this the markets will likely take a dive. Recovery will not occur soon in any event, but, if the tea partiers have their way, expect real widespread misery.
* to provide jobs. Since there are going to be cuts at all levels of government, there is sure to be more unemployment. It is common assumption that only the private sector can create jobs. Not true. In fact, one of the reasons that the US has a ‘defense’ budget that exceeds that of the rest of the world combined, in that it is really a public jobs program. The tea partiers will not want to cut the defense budget. There is always plenty of money for war, but not much for people. In the 1930’s the WPA built park facilities and other public infrastructure that we still enjoy. What we build now are the instruments of our own destruction.
* to deregulate the market in spite of the fact that we have just experienced another crash brought on by regulators who looked the other way. * TP’s think the ‘market’ makes better decisions than democratically elected government. That sound like respect for the Constitution ?
* to block any attempt at mitigating climate damage. Scientists are in agreement. The threat is clear now, but because of corporate misinformation there is little likelihood that there will be much immediate change. As deforestation, drilling, pollution, strip mining, glacier melting, proceed, expect really hot weather, severe storms. We could go extinct just as the dinosaurs did. Steven Hawking thinks we could have a climate like Venus’.
* to allow widespread gun ownership. I don’t see that we become safer this way, in fact gun violence appears to be much worse in the US than in other countries.
* to enforce strict immigration laws. Climate change is going to make many places uninhabitable. Expect to see massive waves of migration. The US has never donated its share of foreign aid to assist. Now the tea partiers want to exclude people in need because they are selfish. (and in many cases racists.) This makes their claims of religious motives pure hypocrisy.
* to outlaw abortion. This is an example of government interfering in people’s most personal decisions. It is motivated by those who favor a theocracy. http://www.seconnecticut.com/religion.htm
