Ghost Writer

By Studs Terkel

I have a scoop. I know who wrote Dubya’s State of the Union address. It was William Claude Dukenfield, a.k.a. W.C. Fields. Rarely has the master of outrageous humor been in such top form. Unfortunately, he was unavailable to deliver the monologue himself. His choice as surrogate was an inspired one: a comic known as Dubya. Though this clown was… return to article

why don’t we hear more serious criticism’s of bush and his family?  to this day we hear about the clinton’s and their brothers.  neil bush is every bit the thief that bc is.  gwb’s father is the country’s 2nd most prominent liar.  gwb’s niece and daughter’s are drug addicts.  his mother is a pig.  they went back 20 years to investigate the madison guaranty and loan fiasco, but it is never mentioned that neil bush stole about as much money as clinton and his friends did.

Studs, you are still THE MAN! What a great take on the state of our union. It’s a shame that the only one who seemed to see the humor in it was Ted Kennedy. I loved watching him wince at sine of Dubya’s laugh lines. As a former journalist, it amazes me that the mainstream media—and so much of their audience—believe that if they criticize Dubya or call him on any of his crap, they are unpatriotic. Has anybody looked up the meaning of the word “democracy” lately? Rage on, Studs, we love you.

Atta boy, Studs! Give ‘em the old U. of C. shuffle. I thought there were also undertones of Groucho Marx there, too.

    Or Harpo, maybe?

Precious good ‘ol Studs.  And, don’t hold our collective breath, folks.  The next ‘act’ will secure the theft of the next election, and it will be difficult to remember W.C. then.

I cringe whenever Bush is called a boy.  It is too frightening to make him seem harmless .........So much of what our wonderful writers put out needs to be very, very clear when you realize the low level of education of Americans and the dumbing down done by the media.

Loved this story… As a fanatical fan of W.C. Fields and fanatical anti-fan of Bushy Baby, I’m floored.  May I reproduce parts of this article and post it on my W.C. Fields fan-page, with high praise and links to “In these Times?” I’m going to put in a screenshot of baby Leroy being booted by Fields. Iíll stick Bushís head on Leroy. I know it wasnít the exact angle in this article but for some reason that image was evokedóof a baby Bush being booted out of the room.
I’m off to subscribe to the paper version of ìIn These Times.î Not since ìThe Onionî has a publication tickled me so much.  Bush, the world’s greatest deadpan comedian… Love it!!!  Now I can watch Bush talk and as long as I remind myself that it is simply his comedic delivery method, I can control my rage.  Youíve given me a great way to cope with my Bush induced violent outbursts.  No longer do I have to throw my television out a third story window.  As Fields said ìIt was a little misunderstanding, how was I supposed to know I was shooting up a police car.î Thanks so much for the laughs!

“Dubya’s State of the Union” was a great piece of comedy. It’s too bad that you can’y laugh when you just lost your job. Where is Mel Brooks when we most need him?  “The State of the Union” is right up there with “To Be or not to Be” and “The Producers” What a farce! Thanks Studs.
