A Crucial Coalition

Women, progressives must march for rights

By Eleanor Smeal

If there is anything that shows the power of progressive coalitions, it is the March for Women’s Lives. The progressive feminist movement will converge April 25 on Washington, D.C., for what will be a historic march for women’s reproductive rights and health. The March for Women’s Lives is co-sponsored by more than 1,200 groups, including women’s, civil rights, environmental, lesbian and… return to article

Thanks for the story on reproductive rights.
The US is fundamentally a more religious nation than Australia and so from this there comes more oppostion to abortion. I am a Christian and so oppose abortion in principle as the taking of a life in embryo which God is in process of creating. However, I do not accept blanket laws which endanger women’s well-being. As a husband anf father I know that if my wife were endangered by a pregnancy, I would be on my knees before God for her rather than the baby although of course the baby also would no less be wanted. I believe that because we live in a society that breaks up into factions over issues it has become very difficult to enshrine the value of human life in the collective mentality. It would be tragic if legislation to protect the unborn jeopardises women, but I do not believe that legislation either way will build into our society the sort of respect for life that is constantly undermined by war, poverty, punitive government behaviours etc…. So I am always in two (or three) minds about this whole issue of reproductive rights.

    Kind regards

Abortion, such a difficult topic.  And yet is it?  I must say that a certain part of me wants to say that if you do not have a womb, you do not have a voice in the debate.  Since I feel as though everyone is entitled to say what they want or need to say, that position is hard for me to state.  In an ideal world abortion would not ever be needed.  But we do not live in that world.  So it may be needed until there comes a time in the future when it will not be necessary.  Since I have not had to make the decision to have an abortion I too feel as though my voice is not as important as the voice of someone who has.  I have escorted women into clinics, and been pelted with rocks and bottles for doing so.  I have joined the debate on the side of choice because I am in favor of choice.  I stand by my conviction that every woman should be able to make the decision for herself.  At the same time I respect the decision of the woman who has had to make this extremely difficult decision as being the one whose vote is the most important.  I do not believe that I should make her decision, nor do I respect the right of anyone else to make that decision for her.

The marchers, the keynote speakers, the signs: ugly, ugly, ugly.  Don’t presume to speak for all women, because “ladies”, you don’t.  You speak only for your soul-less, emotionally bankrupt selves.

Remember “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many babies did you kill today?”  Well back at ya, Susan Sarandon et al.  Hypocrites.

This country is built on the notion of self-determination and choice.  Without choice our nation becomes just like those we seek to overturn.

Make no mistake, if they further erode our rights, they’ll be coming after yours next (i.e. making the Patriot Act permanent or the rumored reinstatement of the draft)
