No Micheal Hardesty, you PERSONALLY, OUT OF YOUR OWN PIGGY BANK, do not owe African Americans anything. INSTITUTIONALLY as whole, this country, the US of A, does owe African-Americans a HUGE debt. The civil rights work your wife did in the 60s is WELL appreciated - I returned the favor by volunteering during my youth at the Associated Jewish charities, actually spending time with elderly Jewish people who had no family (some due to the HOlocaust).
HOWEVER THERE IS SO MUCH MORE WORK TO BE DONE, as evidenced by some of the posts in this discussion. The gains of the civil rights movement occurred because the US was publicly shamed by the world at large during WWII for its treatment of African-Americans as a human rights violation and morality issue - basically you can’t dictate to Germany when look at how shamefully you treat your own people. AGAIN, KNOW HISTORY BEFORE YOU SPEAK.
The fact that your family are “recent” arrivals doesn’t absolve Irish Americans (who are European) of anything. Read the history of this country - the period after Reconstruction, was one of the bloodiest, repressive, oppresive and awful times for the “offcially emancipated” African Americans. And the IRISH sure sided with the “white” people when they got here.
And guess what else during this same time period that you’re quoting? The Irish were allowed in this country as labor to DISPLACE AFRICAN-AMERICANS already here; the Irish themselves were trying to ESCAPE OPPRESSION, FAMINE AND RACISM FROM THE ENGLISH. Once here in the US and only here in the US, the Irish became “White”. (This only means that in the US, if you aren’t of African descent, you now become “White” with its privledges.)
In Ireland, sheep displaced the Irish off the land that they farmed for rich landowners. (Settlement Act, The Penal Codes and Catholicism, The Great Famine.) Hmmm…I think the Irish are still fighting now….? DO YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY? I make it my business to know yours and mine. Many of the same arguements you give about African-Americans and their supposed criminality, etc. were used against the Irish both in Ireland, England and the US when your family immigrated here…how things change and stay the same.
Listen Michael Hardesty and crew, African-Americans would much prefer a TRUE LEVEL-PLAYING FIELD, REAL EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW AND ALL INSTITUTIONS IN THIS COUNTRY, rather than blood money, which is a little different from welfare. here in the 19th century. They not only did not
displace blacks but they themselves couldn’t get
work because of the widespread anti-Irish discrimination that existed into the 20th century.
I had ancient Irish relatives in West Virginia
that were on both sides of the Civil War.
If Irish today were committing the volume of crimes that blacks routinely do, they would and
should be profiled. If I was handling airport
security I would certain be warier of a Saudi

Personally I support the Palestinians and my
wife tends to be slightly more pro-Israeli.
But I think their suicide bomber tactics have
been totally counterproductive and have only

The whole concept of equality and level playing

I’m mystified as to what else you think we should

the US Govt’s (Cold War) motives for advocating
civil rights. I think it was one of many travesties done under the color of law and fighting Communism that worked to decrease freedom
over here. The state segregation laws should have
been declared unconstitutional from the get-go, I
assume we agree here. But this could have been
done without any push for forced integration,
excepting only government owned buildings which
are subsidized by all the taxpayers and should
not be able to discriminate, so the local or states rights argument never appealed to me.
The Irish are white so naturally they would
identify easier with other whites than blacks,
particularly in a conflict situation. But the
idea that they stole jobs from blacks is ludicrous, at the time they came over blacks
overwhelmningly lived on farmlands in the south
and the Irish were mostly going to big cities,
my family on my Mother’s side, Malloy, was unusual in going to West Virginia.
Nor was the great industrial wealth of the USA
created by slave labor, which by its nature,
is inherently unproductive and inefficient,
outside of its basic immorality. The South lost
the war precisely because slave labor couldn’t
compete with free labor. The US Govt itself
outlawed the slave trade in 1803, we were only
in existence as a government since 1776, so your talking a generation here, not 300 or 400 years
of US govt responsibility since the US Govt did
not exist (we could argue it didn’t exist until
the Articles of Confederation were overthrown
by the Constututional Coup in Philadelphia).
Even today not all blacks are treated unfairly
so you can’t make the broad collective guilt
judgments that you do with semblance of fact.
That the USA is a class society is true and class
is a much greater taboo than race in American
culture and society.
If reparations are due then they would be due
from your fellow blacks in Africa (real brothers,
eh ?) and the Arabs too. Then if we deduct the
real cost of African American crime and welfare,
it becomes more problematic yet. We might be talking about bills, not checks.

due to race quotas or whatever the current euphemism is. So we agree here that the competent
ought to be rewarded over the less competent but

of people advancing on their race, rather than
merit. I know of some professional blacks who resent affirmative action because it is assumed
by everyone that they got their positions due to
same. It’s a minority view in the black but it exists.

I think it’s a mistake to premise the discussion
on what are basically globalist metaphysical issues such as claims that all blacks have been
persecuted for 400 years, all Jews for 6,000 years, all whites are superior products of western
civilization,etc., ad nausem. It’s simply a non-starter, better to start from inductive empirical
observation and then come to modest, manageable
general conclusions. And those conclusions can
always be revised in the light of new evidence.
Real history by its nature is revisionist, always
being revised in light of either new empirical
evidence or new theories obtained by rational analysis.

that deal with local politics in Oakland and/or
Berkeley. The Oaklandnews.com ceased as a regular
online publication with the unexpected demise of
Jeannette Sherwin in January. Jeannette weighed
about 400 pounds and very foolishly opted for a
dangerous bypass operation at Kaiser in Richmond,
which procedure my wife warned her against. Nina
is a medical writer. Jeannette could be very
stupid at times and went off on emotional tangents
such as total support of the Democratic Party and
endorsing Harry Edwards’ suggestion that all black
youth be put in concentration camps for the good
of the rest of us. She had been a victim of crime
as so many of us are and understandably had some
passionate feelings on the subject, what she
referred to as Oakland’s black plague.
Some of us involved in independent progressive
politics tried to keep her on the principled anti-
racist path but it wasn’t easy and she would not
countenance any dealings with Greens or people outside the Democratic Party. But she was good
on City Hall exposes and that’s badly needed
with people like Ignacio and Perata running dirty
back room deals. So any suggestions here are most
welcome. I personally would prefer a more Left
operation than Jeannette ran at Oaklandnews,
which was too centrist for many of us.
BUT NO PC TYPES PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The “witnesses” consisted of the person who for two years had dumped garbage on our property as well as other crimes, the then live-in girlfriend of the landlord whom my partner spoke to for a few seconds on one occasion, a former neighbor of ours from TWO YEARS EARLIER who had to be told by the OPD to not let her dog bark all night, and two personal friends of the landlord who were involved in the car repair business that he conducted out of his home.We never got a chance to present rebuttal testimony. Conger promised she would hear that at a later date, but she never did. My partner has had to spend thousands of dollars appealing this to appellate courts. Judge Julie Conger is unfit to be on any bench or governmental body. She issues injunctions like water mainly to promote her own ideological agenda, which is white self-hate and gun control for noncriminals.
