Thanks for reassuring me that some journalists have an understanding of good judgment, not to mention a desire to verify the information they present. As a reader, I want to know where the good journalists are—you know the kind who are dogged investigators and will stop at nothing to get the TRUTH. Instead, “mainstream” journalism has apparently collectively decided that its consumers are as shallow and silly as they have become. One reason for my rant is an op ed piece by Dan K. Thomasson that appeared this week in my local newspaper, The Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Bluefield, WV. In a discussion wherein he tries to justify the attack on John Kerry’s military record and subsequent stateside activities, Thomasson quotes Kerry as stating in his Senate testimony that his fellow soldiers were “baby killers.” Quoted, mind you. At least, it prompted me to read Kerry’s testimony, which as you probably know, is easily available on a whole bunch of websites. Not only did he never use that phrase, I understood at last—from firsthand reading—that the object of his presentation was the admiinistration and its shameless use of young American lives. Indeed, he presented a passionate plea for the atrocities committed against the active military personnel and veterans to be corrected. Have I read that in the mainstream press? No. Each of us has an obligation to be informed. But I feel strongly that journalists have a higher obligation to inform accurately. The example you gave of what should or should not be included in the abusive relationship discussion seems to me to be the process best followed by responsible reporters—both in straight news stories or op ed columns. Thank you for letting me rant. Keep up the good work for those of us who demand better.
