There is so much to be set right after 8 long and terrible years, that one hardly knows how to prioritize. But I'd say Joel is right here -- this is a key issue and if we don't get the money out our politics (not to say politicians) we will forever be allowed to exist according to corporate whims. And I mean that literally.

I can't tell you how many people I know who are shocked -- SHOCKED! -- to hear the news -- NEWS! Well, I'm sorry to hear that. How come they didn't know? What the heck is going on?

I'm using this vehicle to express my deep gratitude to Mr. Vidal. His collection of essays have put a mighty wind in my sails, many times when the whether was dank and cold and I couldn't see the shore. Ok, enough, already. I do hope GV reads this, soaks up some of the good stuff laying out and about in the hinterlands -- it's here, all right. Just scrape off the mold. THERE!

What's happening with the Repugnikans/Freepers/Christo-fascists/Fill-In-Blanks is that, in the style and manner and way of Rome, our country is ending, it's dying; faster than I thought possible. It is gasping for breath NOW. Unless we all look into this abyss with eyes open, realize it needs resuscitation NOW, we WILL open our eyes to f-word government in the not-too-distant future. Already the odor is strong, wafting from the south -- unless that is rotting flesh from NOLA; could be, come to think of it -- next comes the disgusting sight of its ugly head, rearing. Funny how that works. I look …

Virtual hug and pat on the back for ALL the Lefties here. The rest of you are Freepers and should get the fire next time (Lefties will get this). Thanks. Being surrounded by evilcons all the time makes me jumpy and cranky, and I come here to know the world is still filled with good people like you all (wwoods, Liz, Liberal, etcetera). Luvlee to see you.

Yeah, MM, it IS too early to think about elections. BTW, your comment is (almost) worthy to (bitingly) kneel below Wilde's 'secret life'. How's that? Huhn?

This is a great discussion. I see a lot of anger. Good! Many have posted good websites and references, but I don't see Dr. Helen Caldicott -- very layperson-friendly: HelenCaldicott.com And her organization: NuclearPolicy.org (NucUlear will get you the you-know-where) Nat, everyone is tough on you. Well, good. Educate yourself. It is definitely dangerous to be ill/un/disinformed in this age (nuclear) and if you read Dr. Caldicott's latest book, it will make you realize how dangerous 'Depleted' uranium really is. The term was likely used to 'tame' it so that we will accept such unacceptable things as the use of radiation-laden …

BTW, Ramjet, while I appreciate the article talking about 'dust' and such, I seem to recall, correctly I hope, that Dr. Caldicott's book speaks of DU missles that are designed to crack tanks and armored vehicles -- DU is dense, you see. These explode/burn, of course, on impact and there is vaporization (NOT dust-borne here) and DU sinks deep into the lungs in this way. This from memory, but, again, read her works, especially the latest book. She goes into all the new and pertinent uses, not JUST the neglected/idle devises ('old' isn't correct, is it?)

THANKS to the FREEPER detectors out there: Ghostrabbit, Eadora, Wwoods, Liz, et al. He (sake of argument) cannot get around you!! WhoooHooo. I just want to add one little bit. All this BS Ramjet (and his other incarnations) gives about explosives v. projectiles, etc., is so much dog and pony show. DU will spontaneously ignite on impact, putting out FUMES and GAS that sink deep into the lungs. You measure its half-life in millions of years. Whoever said it is right: it's just another ruse, a way to get rid of nuclear waste. It is DENSE stuff, able to penetrate tanks. …

The (p)resident has said, pardon the paraphrase: 'build the pie higher.' The answer is to free up resources the rich are hoarding (more so every day). Of course, resources become skimpy when the greedheads maneuver to take vast quantities, to say nothing about the rich. When the MICox (a distinctive, I hope, coinage on the unfamiliar phrase(!) Military Industrial Complex) soaks up more than 50% of all the taxes, we know it's crumbs for the rest of us. The answer to discrimination, whether based on race or poverty is to GIVE THEM MORE MONEY. Put the money in their hands. It …

Musing mama, I totally agree with you. I was bowled over by the 'porn' comment -- yes! that is it! So much is explained, isn't it? If you want to know what your culture is saying, ask someone outside of it, right! If you look at the literature from the second wave feminist movement in the 60s, the WOMEN, that is, you find that they/we had to fight separate battles within the movement itself. This is an old theme (read: ancient) and doesn't necessarily reflect that which is dark in the progressive movement. We're all products of our time/culture. What counts …

Well, that was interesting. Lively. I (and all of us here, I dare propose) could say an awful lot , but I stay my hand this time(cheers all 'round), but (wait for it) for one thing. Everything said is valid, and here's why: Progressives think for themselves, and they do so broadly and deeply. No superficial screed, no indeed. It is the very thing that drew me in to the ranks, oh, way back when. The opposite is the mark of the right wing, all lockstep-and-over-the-cliff for the sake of the party, a cult, an ideology (etc.) Not for the progressives. …

Someone said, paraphrasing, 'Let us know when you're ready to run with the big dogs.' Listen. If someone trips over your closely held conviction, examine it, learn from it; don't go off half-cocked, passing your 'feelings' off on someone else. M'kay? Now, woods has a good point. Tell me it ain't 'bout money, honey!!!
