Frist! (Do they do this on this site?!?!?) Anyway: I was just going to say, it seems a bit self-defeating to lobby for the right to rebuild your own homes in sub-par materials - though I agree that a ban on wooden houses must have seemed a bit harsh! Tar-paper roofs should be definitely a no-no, however. Oh yes! Shouldn't they have lobbied rather for a bit of assistance to help them build brick houses with proper roofs?? And the same goes for New Orleans today. Instead of pork for the big businesses, there should be generous grants to home-owners and …

Gosh, Christopher Hayes! (Love the new board format, BTW. Much clearer!) The poting board is stll a bit "teeny", though! But I mean to say... you "progressive" New Left types just LOVE your linguistics, don't you? Must be a post-modern thing. Yes, I liked the article. But... ... couldn't we have just a bit more... well maybe in another article... you don't seem to have done much on this vital issue, of strikes... something about the actual ISSUES of the strikes, linking it to OTHER labour disputes, nationwide... ideas on how workers could actually WIN these things.. and a wider background, …

Cabdriverinchicago... you make some good points, but are too pessimistic, overall, I feel. One must not mistake pessimism for realism! People have to direct their anger, in today's society, in the right direction!! That is the important thing! Ie - upwards - and I don't mean towards God! >< Yes, I think you're right!! People in other CULTURES, not the American one, are (currently) certainworld more into mutual co-operation than the Americans are. I'm not talking about rainforest tribes either. How about the Japanese - they have MUCH more of an ethos of "co-operation". This is shown in their very pop …

Garrett - no pain, no gain!! And I'm sure if they decided to cut your salary in half, you wouldn't feel just the same way. Or to take away your medical benefits. Pity disabled people (as a group) can't go on strike! A really organised left, though, maybe could organise carpools and a sort of cheap "taxi" service for the elderly, needy and disabled, in the event of a strike. THAT might be a good kind of solidarity! (And wouldn't it worry the New York Mayor types if they did!) The Wobblies would probably do it. If they had as many …

Er - Kuya. "Bad Girls" is actually made by ITV (Independent Television) in the UK, rather than by any branch of the BBC! (I'm British, I know!) ITV shows generally have to be more commercial than those made on the BBC... or Channel 4, I think. ITV is therefore probably a little bit more like the "network" TV stations you are used to. (Still finds the time to fund interesting dramas and documentaries, though.) The ratings of "Bad Girls" isn't bad in the UK, not bad at all, it's a very popular show, as our magazines attest. (Looked for precise viewing …

Wolf, go and howl somewhere else. Take your moralizings to President Bush and ask him why HE advocates the killings of innocent civilians, let ALONE terrorists... whether it is a "them or us" situation or not. Funny - how "them or us" is always seen to apply to a whole society... but rarely to its "lesser-status" individual members - such as non-elite women.

Yeah. It has a VERY militaristic title, for such a show, though: "Commander-In-Chief"... not POTUS or... something. No wonder Condi Rice "fans" want to watch it! I don't think that an America "led" by a black, female President along the lines of Rice, though (or,maybe, by such a woman as portrayed by the above actress) would change the "show" very much. The American national show, I mean. It'd still be imperialistic, and these days, that means in a very predatory and brutal way. Still. I can see why some women are tantalized. I wish we could all ignore men! Still, if …

I don't know wwoods, what "happened" in july... all I know is that - no actually, when I wanted to get back in at the end of the month, I found my self logged out - though I was on permanent login (though had no permanent identity) - and it was asking for one - though it hadn't been, a few days before... Anyway, I couldn't log in under my eternal identity, just "Liz", so I e-mailed the webmaster and he kindly let me have it back.... he said that yup I was the "original" liz and that someone else had …

DU... is that Democratic Underground or Depleted Uranium?? (On ITT?) Your ideals, while moderately confusing, because I don't know what One Nation is, you see... oh yes, I vaguely do, only it was headed by some dreadful silly woman who hates Abos... I'm not Australian you see, though I am "internationalist". I like the idea of the simple shiny booklet to explain our "gang's" ideals to The People. The …

To All Libertarians, Neo-Cons, and Similarly Minded Selfish People:- Hurricane KATRINA is a lesson in point why "private initiative" and "faith-based charities" and all that nonsense DO NOT WORK and ARE NOT ADEQUATE... not in anything but the smallest of local emergencies, they're not! Bush keeps yabbering on about how people should donate to the Red Cross and Catholic Charities. THAT's not going to cover it!! It will take ages for the donations to be processed, for a start! Meanwhile, people are still starving, thirsting, dying without medicine and waiting to be rescued from the tops of homes in many areas. …

The above two posts by rocco and sri oracle are pretty good! I wonder what will happen when the Bushie and other con-nuts find this article and board? But, you know, sri: I know a bit about HAARP and am VERY unhappy about it! But - seriously - unlike the Twin Towers thing... *would* the US spooks REALLY want to cause a hurricane in New Orleans and the lower reaches of the Mississippi? Floods always cost MILLIONS if not BILLIONS to clean up after - they had this problem writ a bit smaller when the Mississippi flooded in its higher reaches …

Ergh! Who ARE all these nutty posters on this very important thread anyway? Where are my old friends Margaret, Richard and Lefty? sri oracle - I'll willingly discuss HAARP with you and certain conspiracy theories, such as "New Orleans is sitting on oil and that's why they wanted to drive the people away", etc. Mind you, SO, according to paranormal.about.com, is California - are "they" going to depopulate that!! I REALLY don't think that this current moment is the one to propagate something as impractical as Hinduism or guruism or something... I know most every conspiracy theory going. In the 90s especially I was a paranormal nut. You can only really go crazy over chemtrails if you are a dedicated Jeff Rense nut or you go for the theories of Lyndon LaRouche or something like that.... most people who ARE like that have far-right sympathies/connections, unfortunately!! I actually DO believe that the US government had a lot to do with …

PS. The article at the top of the board is called "Unnatural Disaster", NOT because the author thinks it had anything to do with something weird, but because the author is blaming POOR POLITICAL POLICY DECISIONS - no funding for levees, poor evacuation/disaster strategies, lack of planning, etc!! CAN someone start discussing the political issues properly?

Oh yeah, and I must say, when I put my ORIGINAL post on here (3 posts down) I expected to be slugging it out with one or two Libertarians - not necessarily Bush-lovin' Repugs like scorp. People like the loony Michael Hardesty. Oh well, I suppose he's gone to ground. Originally, I just wanted to make the POINT that Hurricane Katrina is A CASE IN POINT, why libertarian, individualist, neo-liberal, arch-capitalist doctrines - such as those of Ayn Rand for example - DO NOT WORK. They are not adequate for the needs of a society. When it comes to everyday economic …

UNLESS the only sort of entertainment you are looking for is what is technically termed, I now have learned, "porno-sadism", with the emphasis on the sadism with the porn as a secondary though essential element. Hey guys! What do you all think about the idea of a "universal wage"... such as they were actually DISCUSSING for the whole of the U.S. in the early 70s, such as they are NOW proposing in Ireland... and such as they actually HAVE in the state of Alaska... you'd never know it if you didn't run across it because of political web-browsing, like me!! I know about the "working poor" in America and their need to use food pantries, which in this day and age are often drying up. It's disgraceful. Canadians and EU leading the way... I wish; it seems that the World Bank leads the way... But for combatting base-line poverty, surely this Basic Income Guarantee would be a good idea?
