We have a president in Barack Obama who is utterly unprepared for his role as commander-in-chief, at times seemingly disinterested in carrying out the duties entrusted to him. We have a festering problem with the war in Afghanistan that has no end in sight, but the Obama administration continues to obsess about domestic issues that are at the core of their far-left agenda, rather than attempt to tackle the issue of what to do about the mess in Afghanistan that is costing this country money we can't afford, all the while our deepening involvement results in higher casaulty numbers. Are we …

Sonia Sotomayor's spot on the Supreme Court will become an automatic Hispanic one for the rest of the 21st century, just as Clarence Thomas followed Thurgood Marshall in the black seat. I hope President Obama doesn't forget Asian-Americans the next time. It could have been worse, I guess. At least Harriet Miers's name wasn't thrown into the ring again.

A world free of nuclear weapons is not going to happen. The technology to make the weapons can't be "unlearned," and the weapons assume great geopolitical purpose for those that possess them.

There will be no two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian problem because Israel does not want one and will never allow it to come to fruition.

"But history, Holmgren writes, shows that nations experiencing rapid decreases in complexity generally become deeply unstable and experience food insecurity, mass migration and a breakdown of law and order." Japan somehow finds a way to ensure stability and harmony to a great extent throughout its islands, even with food self-sufficiency at around 40%, and the importation of fossil fuels at close to 100% for its needs. When push comes to shove over the peak of oil production, they will find a way to greatly increase other available energy sources. There is considerable angst in the country over expanded use of nuclear …

This is a big black mark on the history of the U.S. Thirty years from now, the same things will be happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. We never learn.

Environmental concerns have taken a back seat to the almighty worldwide economic crisis and the desires of all the big players who have a hand in the till. They don't care about numbers such as the ones mentioned in this article, rather, they are overwhelmingly concerned with ones like bailout cash totals and stock market averages that define their own selfish interests. It will never truly change.

Israel has been nothing but trouble for the rest of the Middle East for the past six decades, and I wish that the U.S. had simply ignored it from 1948 onwards. Israel belongs on any objective list of nations sponsoring terrorism.

Obama campaigned under the promise that he would significantly reduce our military forces in Iraq in his first year and a half in office, resulting in a savings to the taxpayer of billions of dollars each month. However, he also made it clear that he would support a significant increase in our forces in Afghanistan-at least an additional 30,000 troops. I don't think he will be able to cut the forces in Iraq by the number that he desires during his term, and I predict that he will sign off on an even greater increase in Afghanistan over the next few …

Barack Obama needs to spend less time trying to cultivate his worldwide celebrity status, and spend more time in Washington D.C. dealing with the issues that affect all of us. But then again, his idea of working out our economic problems is to spend us into economic oblivion, so it is hard to have any real hope for the foreseeable future.

"That tall, gangly and little-known state senator rode his oratory skills and cerebral wisdom to the White House in 1860." Abraham Lincoln was a much better-known political figure than this statement suggests prior to the 1860 election due to his exposure in national newspapers following the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. "We are mired in a disastrous and un-winnable war." And President Barack Obama is steadily getting us more involved in another "disastrous and unwinnable war" in Afghanistan and Pakistan. What Iraq was to the failed presidency of George W. Bush, Afghanistan will be to Barack Obama's presidency. "Mr. Change is claiming …

$4 a gallon gas-many people in other parts of the world, including here in Japan, have long been used to prices that Americans now consider outrageous. Too bad, so sad.

If things get too bad, simply pack up and move to a new country. I did many years ago and don`t regret it one bit. After eight years of George W. Bush and his gang, I don`t really feel much of an urge to visit, for that matter. Perhaps a long recession is what the U.S. needs. Get people to start using their brains about how to manage their finances, for starters. Washington sure as hell doesn`t provide an example that Joe Taxpayer should emulate. Nine trillion dollars+ of national debt and it is ballooning by the day. I guess most …

whattheheck, Thanks for the questions and sorry for the late response. I left the U.S. because I simply like to move around and experience new things. I guess this is why I also served in the Navy. Life here interests me because there is always something new I can learn and do. You are right. This is a global mess. And what happens in the U.S. most definitely has serious repercussions for Japan`s economic future. Considering the fact that Japan has the highest ratio of debt-to-GDP among industrialized nations-if memory serves me correctly-Japan`s economic outlook is rather bleak for the short-term. …

I have always found Richard Dawkins`s works to be extremely informative and thought-provoking. I especially like his "Ancestor`s Tale," and the compelling case he makes for his beliefs in science. I don`t agree with everything he says in " The God Delusion," but I commend him for having the guts to write the book.
