Our local paper in Cleveland, the Plain Dealer, is a perfect example of the problems facing the newspaper industry. I think in Plain Dealer's case that many subscribers lost interest in all the reprinted information. Core local, regional, and state stories had weak coverage as well. National news is so easy to obtain these days that newspapers should focus on regional and some state issues. The Internet still can't compete with the local reporter!

I support unions, but I've seen my share of unions that simply turned their back on employees that ultimately ended up terminated from their jobs. If the unions want to gain strength, they really need to return to their core principals.

It's much better to have a family living in a home for free then for the home to be vacant. In Cleveland, near where I live, many homes have been taken over by criminals. One house was even used for prostitution, and the sidewalk is littered with condom wrappers and even worse. It is disgusting and an occupied home would prevent this from happening.

Wal Mart fears unions because of the conditions, pay, and benefits that they offer. Wal Mart has clearly grown so quickly because it has paid less towards its workforce then competing stores. And most of the products that sit on Wal Mart store shelves is made in China. One could argue that Wal Mart, through its competitive pricing structure tactics, has pushed more companies to move offshore.

My father worked for United Airlines for 33 years. As the employee owned company was going under, the executives fully funded their own pensions and created provisions that would preserve executive pay during a bankruptcy. These items are a short list of what executives did to preserve their own behinds. Now, years later, my father still wonders how much his monthly retirement check will be.
