Three weeks ago, more than 100 people came to our offices in Chicago to hear In These Times Senior Editor David Sirota talk about his New York Times bestseller, The Uprising.
I moderated the lively discussion and I want to share with you something David said at the end of the event: "The Right in our country has been able to build its power with such strength, because it puts its money behind its movement."
Progressives must counter the Right, and we must do so by supporting nonprofits such as In These Times. Your contribution helps build the foundation of a progressive movement in America.
Let's talk simple math: If everyone on this list gives only $10 today, In These Times will be able expand our Web presence, commission more investigative pieces, and build a stronger foundation for the progressive movement. For $10, that's a lot of heft for your dough.
Please join me in making a gift today. Show there is power in numbers.
Over the last few weeks, you've heard from several of our writers and editors about why you should give to In These Times as part of our "32 Reasons To Give for 32 Years" campaign. Here are my 8 reasons why you should give today.
25. The movement. Like David said at the event: We must put money behind the action.
26. A voice for the voiceless. In These Times will report on stories of the imprisoned who languish in captivity from the grim cells at Guantánamo Bay to a detention center in Lumpkin, Georgia.
27. We'll check it out. In These Times bows to the age-old journalists' creed: "If your mother tells you she loves you, check it out."
28. The legacy. We preserve the legacy of the "unapologetic radical": James Weinstein, the magazine's visionary founder.
29. Subscriptions are up. BUT, WAIT A MINUTE: Subscription revenue covers only 30 percent of our annual budget. The rest must come from members of the In These Times community like you.
30. Our latest issue. Our magazine continues its commitment to equality. Without spoiling the surprise, I'll tell you that the cover has a big picture of John McCain's face and the headline "McSEXIST."
31. Obama's running rightward. It is crucial that we push back and remind Barack Obama that he owes much of his remarkable political career to the support he's received from his progressive allies.
32. 32 years in print! Let's make it 32 more years in a new era of progressive uprising.
Please consider giving today. Whatever amount you can give, it will make a difference. It's important that you join our community -- collectively, we can make a difference.
Your support allows In These Times to stay strong and independent. It allows us to bring you the investigative stories and incisive criticism that the progressive movement needs.
If progressive ideals and goals are to be realized, we must fund media institutions like In These Times. This is where leading progressives have a voice.
Thank you for being part of "The Uprising."
Sincerely yours,
Laura Washington
Senior Editor
