Dear In These Times reader,
The party continues to try to prove Ben Franklin wrong, trying to buy security by sacrificing liberty, Wisconsin state Rep. Jeff Wood said July 8, upon leaving the Republican Party to become an independent.
With the presidential campaigns filling up headlines, a more local trend has gone largely unnoticed: Moderate Republican state legislators are abandoning the GOP, alienated by hard-line stances on social issues and conservatives' embrace of big government, writes Hans Johnson, an In These Times contributing editor. And party switches, Johnson says, can be an early indicator of results in the next election. Read his article, Jumping Ship, just posted today.
