DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT. In These Times, a 32-year-old independent progressive magazine based in Chicago, seeks a Director of Development to plan, manage, and execute all fundraising activities. The Development Director will work closely with the publisher and the In These Times Board of Directors, and will function as a senior member of the publishing staff. The successful applicant will possess a desire to lead the fundraising efforts of a small award-winning, tax-exempt, nonprofit, independent media organization.

The Director of Development:

• Works with the board and publisher to plan fundraising strategy;
• Manages all activities related to the analysis, execution, control and evaluation of all fundraising programs;
• Works with board and publisher to cultivate prospects, create strategic alliances, arrange and participate in the solicitation of major gifts, coordinate and write and research all grant proposals, and manage all non-government reporting requirements;
• Plans and organizes fundraising events;
• Analyzes and researches models of fundraising, particularly with a mind towards organizational growth in the field of independent print and online journalism.

Required Skills:

• Strong organizational skills.
• Detail-oriented.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects.
• Works well under pressure.
• Skilled communicator, both written and oral.
• Strong computer skills: must be adept at Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher (or equivalent), and Donor Perfect; experience with Macs is a plus.
• An interest in and understanding of independent media.
• An interest in and understanding of philanthropy and planned giving.

Education/Experience/Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years experience working on a nonprofit development team.
• Experience working with volunteers.
• Familiarity with fundraising software, particularly Donor Perfect.
• Valid driver’s license.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Full health and dental. Four weeks vacation per year. Deadline for applications is June 9.

PUBLISHING INTERNSHIPS. Depending on experience, interns work on press releases, event coordination, or donor/grant prospecting. Interns should have high-quality writing and research skills, attention to detail and knowledge of basic office software. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Raiser's Edge a plus. Individuals with experience in marketing, event-planning, non-profit management and fundraising are strongly encouraged to apply. Internships are 2-3 days a week for four months and begin in May, September and January.
