Jobs & Internships
EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS. If you have a strong interest in progressive politics and independent publishing, and can work at least two days a week in our Chicago office, why not volunteer at In These Times? Depending on experience, our interns fact-check, proofread and research articles and write. When applying, please indicate when you are able to start. (Note that start and end dates of the internship are flexible.)
Applicants should send a cover letter and résumé to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). No attachments please – paste your résumé and letter into the body of an email, and include the word "internship" in its subject line. Applications with attachments will not be considered.
WEB INTERNSHIPS. If you are passionate about progressive politics and looking for a crash course in Web editorial and publishing skills, apply for an In These Times Web internship. The magazine seeks two winter interns to help manage, expand and improve InTheseTimes.com and contribute to In These Times' staff blog TheITTList.com. This position is perfect for someone addicted to both the Internet and progressive news and analysis.
Each (regrettably unpaid) Web intern, who ideally will commit to 10 hours per week between early January and late May, will have a healthy mix of traditional editorial (proofreading, fact-checking, editing) and Web (content production/promotion, blogging, tagging, traffic tracking) duties. ("Healthy" because the future of journalism/journalists is online...) Experience with blogging, content management systems, Photoshop, Mac OSX and HTML strongly preferred, but not required.
Web interns will be encouraged to pitch stories for both print and/or web publication and will assist editorial staff with proofreading/fact-checking of print stories in the week before press deadline.
The intern would be required to work from In These Times' Chicago office one day each week, but some work could be done remotely via e-mail and IM. (Interns are welcome to work in the office throughout the week; Apple computers provided, but a wireless connection for laptop lovers is available.)
Applicants should email a short cover letter, résumé and two writing/blogging samples (or links to them) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) (jeremy@inthesetimes.com), with the subject line WEB INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. Please paste the cover letter into the body of your email. If you are reading this, we are accepting Web intern applications.
PUBLISHING INTERNSHIPS. Depending on experience, publishing interns work on press releases, event coordination, or donor/grant prospecting. Interns should have high-quality writing and research skills, attention to detail and knowledge of basic office software. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Donor Perfect a definite plus. Individuals with experience in marketing, event-planning, nonprofit management and fundraising are strongly encouraged to apply. Internships are 2-3 days per week for four months and begin in May, September and January.
Applicants should e-mail a cover letter with résumé – the résumé should be an attachment – to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) (dan@inthesetimes.com). Feel free to call him to discuss the position.
