Letter from the Publisher
Dear Reader,
In These Times draws its inspiration from the muckrakers of a century ago and the role these journalists played in ushering in the reforms of the Progressive Era—the first public health regulations, an end to child labor, the eight-hour workday and women’s suffrage.
At the end of 2006 we asked you how to improve the In These Times‘ Web site. More than 1,000 of you responded. You told us why you go online for news and information, which issues you want more reporting on, and how In These Times can connect you to a community of your peers.
We listened, and now we’re now taking action.
In These Times has received a seed grant to implement important updates to our Web site. But we need your help to get to the finish line. You can provide support for the reporting that is essential to creating a just democracy.
Donate to the In These Times‘ 21st Century Muckrakers Fund.
With your support for the Muckrakers Fund, InTheseTimes.com will bring you:
- Exclusive reports on major issues including the war in Iraq, the environment, the undermining of civil liberties and the health care crisis. We will also provide you with on-the-ground reports from progressive and grassroots movements.
- Rapid response analysis and updates on political developments from inside our nation’s capitol.
- Original commentary from political, activist and cultural leaders within the progressive movement.
- Streaming video and audio of interviews with movement leaders and excerpts from In These Times‘ sponsored events.
- An online forum to interact with In These Times staff, contributors and other readers.
The 21st Century Muckrakers Fund cultivates young, gifted writers who will shape our country’s future. Their investigative reporting will shed light on social and economic injustice, expose government corruption and corporate malfeasance, and make the world a better place for us all.
If you and 299 other readers of inthesetimes.com donate $50, we will be able to publish hundreds more web-exclusive articles, video clips and commentaries over the coming year.
With a tax-deductible donation of $50 or more, you’ll receive a free one-year subscription to In These Times‘ magazine. With a tax-deductible donation of $75 or more, you’ll receive a free one-year subscription AND a free copy of The Long Detour by In These Times‘ founder James Weinstein. If you already subscribe to the magazine, you can “gift” your subscription to someone else.
Please donate as much as your pocketbook allows. Every dollar counts. On behalf of all the staff here in Chicago, our muckraking writers, and the In These Times community—we thank you.
Sincerely,
Tracy Van Slyke
